A.E. Murphy

A. E. Murphy is the Queen of sarcasm and satire, she likes long walks in the park, as much as ice cubes like to chill in a roasting oven.
She’s effortlessly independent and so good at adulting it’s unfair on the rest of the world. She only napped twice today and has only avoided the dishes for three days before making the child slaves do them this morning.
Winning!
Her favourite hobby is writing, her worst hobby is reading through that writing.
Also she has two cats that carry toys to the top of the stairs and drop them down so they can chase them. They do this repeatedly in the middle of the night.
Who cares if she has work the next morning?
Not the cats, that’s for sure.
And if it’s not the cats doing the waking, it’s the toddler crawling into bed with her and pulling individual hairs from her scalp with pudgy little fingers for comfort.
This is likely why she’s in a constant state of grump unless there’s chocolate and coffee.
P.S. Please leave feedback, if not on the book then on this ridiculous bio she wrote herself. It’s the least you can do seeing as she’ll forever talk in the third person now.
Alex loves her readers. Alex says thank you. Alex smiles.

I stopped at about halfway in. They were in a good place and I bought the relationship and was content. I even wrote a review with a pretty high rating. It lasted for about five minutes as I read other reviews to get a glimpse of what I missed . . . and then I nuked that original review and let me just say I'm really, really freaking glad that I chose to dnf where I'm at. Murphy does a pretty good job to where I'm at with believable characters and a strong relationship. And then she wads it into a ball of crap and hurls it into the sun. . It's like the author heard of the "dark moment" trope and said to herself "Moment? I can do better than that!!!"

I'm sorry, but it was bad enough that the title, cover, and cover copy all mask the deep undercurrents of this story. Suicide (of her mother) and depression (of her mother, but probably her as well though likely not clinically) are at the heart of the self-destructive behaviors Raven exhibits at the start of the story. Behaviors that include drinking, drugs, and meaningless sex. She came out of that destructive spiral and was stronger and better and she had done so without substituting Travis as her crutch. Which I was glad for because I like them together. Only, she must be stronger than I suspected because the betrayals afterwards are immense and her surviving at all is a miracle. So yay she got strong. Just in time for the author to throw her world into the garbage and mash "incinerate". Gah. Authors: give some warning if you're going to go dark and spew drama all over the place. There is zero indication that this is going to be a heavy drama fest with pain, depression, and suicide taking a big part of the plot-space. Zero. That is just wrong and the primary reason this is getting the full-on single star rating.

Mislabeled. This is a second chance novel, the characters are 28 before they get together

I need to start off with a warning. I finished this book for the sake of leaving an honest review, but this was an automatic return due to the author fraudulently describing this story. Note only is this a second chance novel, you get 300 pages in before they break up for TEN FREAKING YEARS. Yep that’s right, 10 years. This is the second time that I’ve seen this lately and it really angers me. I’m not a huge fan of second chance novels, and I’m even less of one after being tricked into reading them. Shame on you authors who aren’t confident enough in your abilities to be honest. If you have to try to trick people into reading your novels, you don’t deserve to get them read.
That being said... There are some other serious issues with this boom. The H is basically given a free pass to be a selfish jerk because he is a “dork”. For someone that supposedly has loved her since he was 8 years old he has a funny was of showing it. He constantly plays games with her, and screw with her head. He sleeps with (or at least is physical with) other girls, but when he hears a rumor that she was with a guy suddenly it’s “cheating”. She is sexually harassed because he and his friends decide that she is a slut. He is constantly playing the victim all the way to the end. He becomes the reason that her Dad basically hates her. Her step mom calls her a *itch, and says she wants her gone. Her dad kicks her out and doesn’t bother to even acknowledge her at her high school graduation. There is a really stupid plot twist where supposedly a gang member jumps the H over a prank gone wrong (that she apologizes for so many times I almost threw my kindle). It makes no sense for multiple reasons. Being that he was fine at graduation this had to have happened over a month after the prank. By then there is no way that everyone in school wasn’t aware that his phone was hacked. So why would some guys risk his freedom over something so stupid. It leads to him being angry and bitter at her for years. He never apologizes for anything he did wrong. He was hooking up with another girl right in front of her, he never apologizes. She was a stupid kid, who played the Prank after he/his fried put a nasty profile on a swingers site with her REAL PHONE NUMBER! SHE TIRED TO GET EVEN AND IT ACCIDENTALLY went to everyone instead of just the girl he immediately started hooking up with (you know even though he loved the h so much). And for that she lost EVERYONE in her life. He got all of the love and support. For 10 years she was completely on her own. And when her family came back into her life, she was practically on her knees apologizing and feeling like she didn’t deserve them. I had a real problem with that. She ends up with the selfish ass (10 years later) who did his best to ruin her life while blaming her for every bad thing in his life. There is another review on here that says better better than I did. Read it!

First lets start with the things I liked.
I liked the general concept and all the characters individually. It was definitely different from other high school romances and had way more depth. It also had way less slut shaming than is common in these types of books.
Now, onto things I did not like.

Nomatter how less the slut shaming was it was still present. Calling the girls who are interested in your boyfriends sluts and whores and skanks might be common but it's not alright.
For all the issues the author decided to take up. Like suicide, depression, anxiety, abandonment issues, bullying. She didn't exactly tackle them or give solid solutions. Her only solution for everything was either time or blaming it on Raven.

Travis's surprise injury really seemed out of the blue and unrealistic. Just another thing to guilt Raven with and to justify why her family didn't bother with her for ten FUCKING years. I mean why would a random girl's boyfriend feel threatened to such a degree that he will beat an innocent guy? Unless ofc American teens are this thirsty for violence. It just did not make any sense especially after Raven publically apologized for what she did.

Travis and his behaviour on occasions also had me on edge. Like him choosing to hold a grudge over Raven for something that happened when they were kids. Seriously? Okay you thought she didn't know about her mother untill later but she committed suicide, surely you are now mature enough to understand that everything might not have been dandy leading up to that moment? There were little and big things he did throughout the book that were pure douchey but everybody chose to ignore them. He humiliated Raven during spin the bottle, he was mean for no reason at times,he hooked up with girls(or lied about it) all the time but had a problem when Raven did it, HE DESCRIBED HER BREASTS TO HIS FRIENDS, he was too pushy when he said I love you, he was not even slightly happy or atleast considerate that Raven got into such a good University, he did not trust her, he EXCUSED PRESTON MAKING THAT FAKE PROFILE and many more things that he was never held accountable for. Many of his indiscretions were not even picked up by their parents while they nitpicked on everything Raven did.

THE FAKE PROFILE. We need to talk about this. The way it was swept under the rug so easily had me shocked. The parents weren't told about it, Travis and his friends never apologized for it and Raven forgot about it and started blaming herself. It was extremely misogynistic of Preston to do that. It might seem like nothing at all but it was a recipe for assault (which is more probable than him getting beaten up for something Raven had already taken the blame for) or at the very least harrassment.

My biggest problem and something I couldn't ignore for the life of me was Raven's father and Shaunda. There were many things that irked me about their interactions so we are going to go in detail and talk about them independently(hang in there with me)

Her Father: He was aware of her issues or atleast had an idea but he still always abandoned her when she needed him. He told Travis about what happened with Raven's mom yet did not even give Raven a hint about Travis's leg when he had promised both kids that he will keep their secret. It is clear what he valued more. Idk if it happened off the record but he never admonished Shaunda for bringing up Raven's mom and her depression. He clearly picked sides. In the grand scheme of things sending an accidental photoshopped nude is not a big deal. BUT HE KICKED HIS KID OUT FOR A MONTH, IGNORED HER AT HER GRADUATION AND THEN EXPECTED HER TO NOT GO TO NY? He even ignored her thousands of apologies and then everyone very conveniently blamed Raven for going away and not coming back. He never talked to Travis about his incessantly rude behaviour but on many occasions told Raven to give his toxic ass another chance. His reaction about Raven moving away was plain mean. The things they said were not okay.
He let Shaunda call Raven a bitch and kick her out. If the tables were turned I bet her father would remain amicable with Travis and Shaunda would even silently support him. Which brings us to the other problem.

Shaunda: Shaunda was nice enough in the starting and to say I was glad will be an understatement because I've had just about enough of mean stepmoms. But alas, she was just a mean stepmom in disguise who didn't even get her due. She cornered Raven about trying with her ''shy baby boy" on more than one occasion which I thought was unfair because her "baby boy" had only himself to blame for his problems. Then, she rarely if ever called Travis out on his behaviour with Raven. Conveniently ignoring it. And considering that Raven had started calling her mom it was especially hurtful that she took Travis's side at the drop of a hat anytime she was offered a choice. She would have never kicked her own daughter out if she had done the same thing Raven did, atleast not without an explanation. She did not consider Raven her family and it showed. Anyone who cares about you would never talk bad about your dead mom.

And the worst part was that there apparently was an apology between everyone but we weren't shown anyone else's guilt and apologies except for Raven's.

This book really had potential. It could even be saved upto the very end but it wasn't meant to be. :(

P.S.- This is also something I need to say although it wasn't specific to this book but rather a trend that I am just sick of. Whenever the 'h' is shown to be a drinker and partier( like almost every young adult Hero) it always comes with a side dish of she's depressed, she's insecure, she's reckless. This is not how men are portrayed for acting the exact same way. The only thing that needs to change about them is the girls they surround themselves with and even then it's the girls who are shamed not the men. Their work is always headed in the right direction, their friends are always the most loyal. They just need to cut off the skanks whereas a partying girl is supposed to rediscover herself. Isolating herself completely from old problematic behaviours.

4,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Boże naprawdę to kocham. Kocham. Kocham. Kocham

This book is so much more than just a story. The title had me thinking rom com.. and it does have a few moments where I had a belly laugh going.

Without giving anything away, I'm just gonna say the timing of this books release couldn't be any more perfect.
This book will make you uncomfortable, it will have you taking a hard look at yourself and the people around you. Every choice has a consequence.
The writing is brilliant. The story is so much more..more intense, more passionate, more than a forbidden love story.

Take the chance, I promise this author and this book will not disappoint.

I'm so floored right now, honestly.
So, here's the thing,
Brit recommended this book to me months ago, and I never read books that people tell me to read, idk why, don't @ me.
So, yesterday I texted brit like: "BBBRRRRIIIIITTTTT....IM IN A SLUUUMMPPP :((((" & she said: STEPDORK!!!!!!
So, I ask for more details, trying to convince myself to read a book that someone recommends me, and she says: "the step brother is a virgin" and i screamed, went to KU and downloaded the book and then went back to say OK IM READING IT BYE
So, here I am, completely WRECKED by this stepbrother romance, torn apart and so invested that I just want another book about these characters.

I cannot tell you guys how REAL this book felt to me, it felt like I was reading someones diary or a memoir or nonfiction. I AM INVESTED.

This book has:
✓ A hot, confident, sassy, raw female lead
✓ A nerdy, quiet, geeky, antisocial Hero
✓ SASSY friendships that warm your heart
✓ An amazing representation of mental illnesses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
✓ HOT, HOT, HOT, STEAMY, SEXY, DROOLY SEX
✓ plot twists after plot twists after plot twists.

At 95% I was still saying OMG!!!!!!!

You guys, this has made its way to my top-20 favorite books!!!!!!!
Will forsure be rereading this !!!

I don’t know how to say this but, I hate this book with a passion. Travis...is an asshole! And not the kind everyone loves. He’s a legit a*hole who doesn’t know when to get over something that happened to him a decade ago. He’s trash.

One of those few books that you just sit in a daze afterwards with a stupidly cheesy grin on your face, wondering how you’re supposed to go on with your life now that it’s finished. I was laughing, crying and on the edge of my seat throughout. Everything was executed perfectly with real deep meaningful life lessons behind everything and that just made it ten times better. I sincerely hope that people take some of these lessons away with them. My heart goes out to these characters and a rarity for me is that these characters will be sticking with me for a long while. I don’t say this lightly, but this is easily in my top 5 books of 2019. You’d be a fool not to read it!

Miss Murphy has done it again with yet another great read.
I started this as a little something to read while I was in the bath - I finished it less than 8 hours later at 3.30 in the morning. It just would not let me put it down, the story from the start gripped me and held on tight.
Without revealing too much, it was refreshing to have the story from Raven’s character given her as the ‘rebel’ of the story and Travis as the ‘good guy’. The twists and sharp turns of the storyline kept me hooked, I cried with and for the characters, laughed so loud I woke everyone in the house (neighbors too most likely) only to be shouting at the book in the next breath. The major plot twist I did not see coming and that in my opinion is the best you want out of a book, especially when you’ve grown with the character(s) and you think you’ve got them sussed. Most importantly this book made me think and feel, remembering/relearning valuable life lessons.

Well done Miss Murphy and I can’t wait for another amazing read - in the meantime I will reread StepDork

I have the biggest smile on my face after finishing this read.
The cover..the blurb..led me to believe it was a rom/com - enemies to lovers..
It WAS NOT. It was soooo much more. So well written. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Emotionally, this book was more than I was prepared for with a teenage step-sibling story. There were some very heavy topics, especially taking in the age of the main characters. While well written, it felt like it was too heavy for the way the blurb and cover describe it. And while the subjects were very mature, the fmc, wasn't. Because she was almost a complete opposite of how I was in high school, I had a hard time connecting to her. For most of the book she was immature and destructive in a way that I just didn't like. This wasn't a bad book, in fact it was good. Just not what I was wanting or expecting to read right now.

OMG, I do believe that Travis and Raven have moved to first place in my faves from this author and that’s saying a lot. Nate and Gwen from broken has always been my faves, my go to reads, but this story had me reading it in one day because I just couldn’t wait to find out what happened. If you have never read any books by this author, I am sorry. She is amazing, talented and her books suck you in and make you want so much more. I can promise you will not be disappointed, take a chance and enjoy some of the best stories.

I don't know, this book was actually pretty good and well written. I don't normally read "stepbrother" books. But for some reason, I am reading stepdork. I think it is because it is more of a romcom vs erotica/deep life.

This book doesn't focus on the stepbrother thing.. Other than two family's coming together and one has to be a guy the heroine always called a dork.
To a certain degree, they are both strong people. Great bantering, angst.
The book starts off Senior year in highschool with only a few months left before graduating.

After finishing this book, I couldn't even tell you what the main story line was BUT all I know is that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It had all the things i love. Banter, dual POV, minimum inner monologue, strong characters, having the characters actually inner act with each other vs just telling us and no fillers such as a two page description of the school, etc;

This book could have ended with a major cliffhanger but the author went right on ahead and continued the story. Haven't seen that in awhile. Most authors want you to buy another book; even then it is mostly just "fillers".

This book was a good book and very well written. nothing just to deep about it.

I cannot get over the fact that the author crippled the poor hero.

What was his fault????!!!!

It was such a cruel thing to do.

Which is why I am giving one star less.

How could the author make him suffer so?? Why??

The heroine was truly messed up. Hurting the hero. Hurting herself.

Authors minds can’t be reasoned with. Right? The twists and turns they take.

I have so many issues with this book, especially about Raven's parents. What a greeeeeeaaaattt parent they are. Toooootallly. I'll just say the huge ones.

Overall, this author knows how to write. But I'm still disappointed with this book. It looks like the story is supposed to be about love, forgiveness, and all those stuffs. But the whole story is actually about a poor sweet girl who gets abused and left alone and in the end is still marked as the bad guy while the others are her victims. It makes it seems like she 'deserves' all the misery because hey, it's because of her actions.

Yeah well, she deserves better man and better family.

Oh my goodness! This book made me feel every emotion. ❤️🤬😢☺️ 😍 Before you start this amazing book, you may want to have Kleenex. This author always hits home with every book she writes. She makes you fall in love. She makes you hate, and then you have to settle in for the ride back to love. She is so very talented.

I found Raven so real. She hid her feelings hoping if she doesn’t feel them, she doesn’t have to deal with it. I felt the way the mental health issue was portrayed was real. Her growth in that made her character oh so very complex.

Travis was the adorable boy that fell in love at 8. He made me smile, laugh, and cry. You couldn’t help falling in love with him. What he went through in the book because of Raven...🤐

Man do they end up with some craziness that pulled them apart. Who doesn’t love to read about teenage drama and angst. These two had me holding my breath, and I swear I didn’t take a breath for a long while. All of the characters...you just couldn’t help but love them.

You don’t want to miss this one! One of the best books I have read all year!

I need a dork in my life. Seriously. This book made me swoon and squeal and then pissed me the hell off when I realized I'd gotten to 92% and that meant my fun was almost over. Sometimes I wanted to bitch slap Raven and shake some damn sense into her. Other times, it was Trav who deserved my very best backhand. Then, I wanted to grind on him HARD, like working his pole was my way to pay for college (student loans are a bitch).

For real tho... buy the book. You wont be sorry... cuz A.E. Murphy be droppin' books like sick beats.

I'm so mad about it, i shipped them so much, and now getting to this after of course i was already upset for other lighter thing? it's so unbelievable and unrealistic , who the heck just go away 10 years just like that, come on now. And even if they re connect i don't care anymore, for me the story it's ruined . sorry but this book was a no for me

As other readers have already said, 'Stepdork' is so much more than a love story.

It portrays teenage years and what teens go through in a very realistic way. I loved the writing of the book, I loved how the characters were described (except for Travis, square glasses seemed too cliché for me and while reading the book, I never pictured him with so).

Overcoming your past, sexuality, first love, friendships. That’s what Murphy’s book is about.

5/5 to this book and I strongly recommend it.

Wait a minute

I was not prepared for the ride I just went on! But what a beautiful, transforming ride it turned out to be!
Raven & Travis are perfection! Their journey was definitely unexpected, I honestly figured it was gonna be another stepbrother book, but it was so much better.
