A wonderful series of cookbooks is the "Perfect" series by Ann Willan. The recipes are sophisticated and contain tips that took me years to discover, such as pressing the dough above the edges of a tart pan before blind baking. Every cooking step has a full color photo. These books (including this one), while small, are often better than large volumes put out by famous cooking schools.

The cover is great and it looked as though it would be a great book with those follow along pictures that are fun. I was not impressed. Every recipe is labor intensive and/or requires you to go out and find some hard-to-find ingredients.
