A rusty barrel...a toxic spill...a freak accident unleashes the most hideous force in the universe! Decades ago, a great horde of Aliens invaded Earth. Mankind was nearly obliterated. But suddenly, the Alien forces were crushed, destroyed by common Earth bacteria. The war was over. The repulsive remains of the Aliens were sealed away. And gradually, everyone forgot.
But the dormant Aliens have revived. Their mission is the same...to prepare the earth for colonization...more Aliens are on the way. This time, they won't be so easy to find...
It isn't perfect. Certain language used to describe non-white characters is sometimes wince-worthy and usually unnecessary. Giving the color of the alien ships as "obsidian" does give the reader pause to wonder if the writer had ever seen the original movie. But, those trifles are fairly easy to shrug off. This is not merely a novelization, nor simply an expansion on a pilot script. It's a thorough exploration of an already established world that is itself being newly expanded upon. Some tensions are heightened while we get more into the heads of the characters. Even one-scene cyphers and the aliens themselves become more well rounded individuals here than in the TV show. Discrepancies between the book and the show can easily be attributed to the writer either going with an earlier draft of the script, or simply being allowed free reign. Along with the TV series, this is something of an overlooked gem, and a worthy companion to the classic movie.
As a TV series tie in, it is pretty effective. I loved the show so I enjoyed the book as it does add depth and detail that was missing from the TV show. But it doesn't stand up much on it's own as a story, it mainly exists to just flesh out the TV characters so if you didn't watch the show you wouldn't really get the point.
