Beneath the red and blue lights of the stage, he appeared ethereal, almost dreamlike. His fingers played across the strings of the guitar so fast that her eyes could not detect movement. The music vibrated through the room. To listen to it was to be pulled into a world of enchantment where reality blended with fantasy. Nicole felt her heart beating faster as the notes he played filled the small nightclub. Until that moment he had been looking down as he played, but abruptly he lifted his head to peer out at the crowd. His gaze came to rest on Nicole. His icy-blue eyes locked with hers. As he stared at her, he seemed to look right into her soul. His dark hair fell in waves around his shoulders - glistening beneath the glare of the lights. His black clothing hugged his muscular frame, leaving little to the imagination. Not that Nicole would let her imagination get away with her. After all, she was here on business. Even as his gaze drew her in and she felt the first prickles of pain behind her eyes, she had to keep reminding herself what Ethan had told her. Don't look into his eyes! Those were his exact words, and precisely what she'd made the mistake of doing. He stepped up to the microphone, and his deep - smooth voice vibrated in her ears. He sang of passions, darkness and unfulfilled hunger. Her mouth went dry and she began to shake. She lifted her drink to her lips. Nicole now knew why the infamous Alec Norwood could make women lose their minds. She hadn't believed it for a moment. Sure she'd heard of him. Who hadn't? He was quickly turning the local rock scene on its head. His dark music was like nectar to the troubled soul, and his looks were enough to send a woman's common sense right out the window. But you're not another one of his groupies. You're here for a reason! Nicole wouldn't let herself be put under Alec Norwood's spell. She struggled to focus on the task at hand. The rest of the members of Necro were just as dark as he was. The music was perfect, not one of them missing a note or a beat. When the song ended, they went into a slow - haunting melody. Nicole felt the music come over her like a soothing warm blanket. She suddenly felt tired, as if she'd been drugged. Getting up from the table, she made her way through the crowd toward the ladies room. Maybe if she could splash some cold water on her face she'd feel better.

Quick read, only about 100 pages on my Sony e-reader. Its the start of a new series but I don't know when the 2nd will be out. The book definitely set up the story for future books. I choose it because it was about 2 of my fav things: vamps and rock musicians. Had very little to do with hero being rocker however. Nicole who seems to be a regular mortal women seeks out Alec - the rocker vamp - to help her boss, also a vamp, find the place where vamps can be in the light and then to free her boss from the bad vamp who has knowlege of the place of light. Along the way Nicole and Alec fall in love, Alec leaves her for her own good (seems I've read this before), and we find out about Nicole's past and how it affects the current situation. The book doesn't end on a cliff hanger but it does set up future books involving Nicole and Alec's fight against the bad vamps and search for the light.
I knew. I knew going into Born to Darkness by Lorraine Kennedy that the book was probably going to be mediocre. The plot summary was rather mundane, the cover was underwhelming, but still, I gave it a try.
To be frank, I got almost 35% into the story before I gave up. The book was surface-level shallow. The characters had no development, the dialogue was disingenuous, and the way the characters actions unfolded made no sense. It felt as if the book was written as a piece of fan fiction by a teenager. I wanted there to be depth, tension, world-building... but instead, I found rather predictable scenarios and poor editing.
This book may make a short, entertaining read if Twilight was high on your scale of literary genius, but this wasn't the sort of vampire romance I'd recommend to serious readers.
Nascent Private Detective Assistant Nicole Ashe can't believe that her boss is a vampire. She's drawn to vampire musician Alec Norwood and they are both very aware of two things. One that her boss would like her to retrieve a possibly mythical relic and; two - that they are very much attracted to each other. This quickie read was surprisingly engaging from the outset but did seem a bit choppy - especially for a short. IMO - three words would be a sufficient description, choppy, far-fetched and disappointing. Too often Nicole had knowledge she shouldn't or couldn't in that place in the story and her actions while supposedly brave came off a tad silly as she stumbled around the various vampire nests in New Orleans. I found myself saying "really?", with my head cocked a bit too often. Truly suspending belief would work well for this story. The characters themselves are rather likable but the ending felt rushed. When it was over I felt as if it was a wasted opportunity.
Would give this one 3 and 1/2 stars. Good story line, but very involved plot, lots of sub plots, lots of secondary characters and an ending that's an ending, but..... not.
Nicole discovers she is working for a vampire, creatures she didn't know exist. Her boss is a private investigator, who works with the New Orleans police, but he sends her on a secret mission to set p a meeting with a musician, Alec. Who she discovers is a vampire also. She get pulled into their world. Her boss, Ethan, is a "light seeker" a group of vampires looking for a way to erase their dark curse and live in the light, and of course she is the key!
She is drawn to Alec and he is drawn to her, but he doesn't think a relationship between them can work. He gives in to lust, but refuses to give into love. He leaves her, than he comes back, the end. Kinda left you hanging
Not amazingly good, but pretty good for such a short story (about 75 pages ebook format). The love and chemistry between Nicole and Alec was almost instantaneous, but it felt natural and meant to be. It was fun watching their love blossom and steam up over the course of the book.
The plot was suspenseful and kept my interest throughout the book. With the book being faced-paced, it helps maintain your interest, without a surplus of filler words and similar.
There are a few grammatical errors in the book (example: "By" instead of "Bye" and the need for commas), and the ending seemed a little artificial to me, but nonetheless, it was still a nice, quick read that left me unable to put my Nook down.
Whatever you do, DON'T listen to the audiobook of this. I might have liked the story better (2 stars)if I'd just read it, but the audiobook form was the WORST I've ever heard. I really don't like having to give such a low score, but the narrators were so bad, it actually made me wince at times just to hear the halting lines and over-acting. Then at the change of each chapter, you're forced to listen to some awful music. It reminded me a bit of the old tapes and book sets for kids where the tape would make a chime sound to prompt the child to turn the page of the book where they were reading along.
Unless you are into torturing yourself or those around you, I'd say to pass on the audiobook version for sure. I don't even think I'll try to continue this series even in ebook format.
Free download. Well another vampire story with so much potential but it just didn't get you there. The story was good and the plot is different but it was rushed and the characters seemed to get close in too little time. Nicole is very dark, she lives with hurt over the death of her brother. When she meets Alec, a vampire, her lack of surprise at entering this supernatural world is unusual. Apart from her mother every other character is a vampire. This should have been a good story but is just lacked that thing that kept you reading, it's not a series I would continue reading.
The overall story and the ideas were excellent but it was way to rushed, too fast, nothing developed, it just was. The writing was a bit immature in places and there were some holes. I think this could evolve into something really good if the author addressed and corrected some things.
I really couldnt remeber what was all about this book. After I re read the summary I remembered everything. Other that the silly way you can see Paradise is a good book. But nothing that will change the way you look the world though the vampire is extra extra hot and yummie.
This book made me never want to read a vampire story every again. Because it was so bad. It was very short and cheesy. The only thing that was good was the plot was good until it was messed up.
This is going to seem corny, but here goes. I am a recovering addict of 15 years and I have been reading vampire lore books for years. I quite literally would devour one book or series after another.Everytime I would finish a book the process of finding a new story to catch my interest that I have yet read about. I kinda fell on a book readers depression unable to find a suitable book and I kinda accidentally found this series. I must say my readers depression is over.As I said I am in recovery and reading is quite literally my replacement,if that tells you anything then you know how serious my dry spell was and finding this book was literally “lightening “. I love the multiple story lines but with this book you don’t get lost in it all because each character has a lifeline to the next and it makes it so easy to keep track and have each one be memorable . I thought this was also a different take on the” vampire “,no sparkles or constant vampire headaches from constant broken necks.Though those references are what spawned my love for this genre this series has a fresh new base meaning to the vampire legend and it was really refreshing and I cannot wait for #2.I literally cried at the end.So Thank you for ending My dry spell!! To the light!
Never heard anything so horrible in my entire life! The concept is the story is pretty decent. That's why started to read it. I just could not bring myself finish the dialogue is atrocious the character interactions I can. He began it just makes no sense some girls are's work for a guy who she doesn't know the vampire so he just up and takes her one night in the middle of the cemetery to me another vampire after he is previously center in a club to take a message for a vampire without telling her is a vampire only just don't look into his eyes… Then when they get in the cemetery by the way were both vampires. I have no words to describe how awful.
Good but a bit plain, could have been better more detailed. It lacks on descriptions on the characters to see and feel the emotional part and how there look. I can't picture Nicole and can not warm up to her character. Very pity, I liked the idea of this story about the light seekers, that there is a place where creatures could live in peace. Maybe the second book is better, will see.
This book was amazing from start to finish, I was afraid, at some points, and love the the story, I was right into it as if it was happening to me, a truly realistic book to read even though it is make believe, at the end tears were running down my face. That you for such an also me book.
Through the beginning of the book, I couldn't decide if I liked Alec, if he was good, bad... And if Nicole was stupid for trusting him......but you need to draw your own conclusions, go ahead and read it.
Nicole is a girl who works with Ethan (FBI work). She madly in love with Alec when she sets eyes at the night club. They can't leave each other. Nicole know who's her father and uncle. It's very twisting.
I recommend this book who loves vampires and romance. It's kind of like Twilight. The first time i read this, I was madly into this. It's is a really short story but so good!!!!!
I like this vampire Story. IT's awesome. It is different then others but has originality. Nichole, I really love this character and her story of where she came from. I love Alec as well as his character catches my eyes as I read. I feel like he is learning more about himself and his emotions. I cant wait to read the next book to this series. I want to see what happens in this story. It is exciting and to the point and I love that about the way this writer has written this book. I give it a 5Star. I recommend it to all that like Vampires and passion, desire, romance and a twist to the story. :) Though I must write a caution that it has mature content! Thanks. :)
Born To Darkness is the first book in the Immortal Destiny Series. This is the story of Nicole and Alec and their search for a way to destroy an evil vampire who wants domination over the vampire world.
The story of Alec and Nicole develops fast, their attraction is felt immediately and the story unfolds quickly. The characters aren’t complex; their interaction is short and to the point. Read more of this review here.
Surprisingly good. I thought with only 79pg the story might seem rushed or even choppy, but it’s not. Nicole Ashe enters the dark aspects of the world as she begins working for Ethan in his detective agency. On the job she meets vampire Alec and is instantly drawn to him. A secret Nicole didn’t even know comes out as their attraction increases… one that could get her killed. 79 pagers was enough to get me hooked to the series!
Where should I begin? I hate giving an author a bad review but this was borderline ridiculous. There were so many unanswered questions and world building holes that made the story annoying. The audio book narrators were COMICALLY BAD!! I seriously cannot force myself to read the next book, my common sense won't allow it.
Story - .5 narrators - There really anything good I can say about their efforts. A bad story was made worse by these two and that is sad.
Extremely bad grammar and poor editing made this hard to finish. The story was boiler plate and unimaginative. It was like a 6th grader tried to write a paranormal romance by rehashing elements of the ones they've read.
Nice originality. A hint of mystery and salvation. A few grammatical errors, could use another read through. But a very nice intro to series. Has me intrigued enough to look for the rest as they are published.
Great storyline. Characters seem very well developed. However, the story seemed unfinished. Kind of leaves you wondering, "ok, now what?" Another issue is the question marks. They're all over the place when they do not need to be. If you over look that, it's a very enjoyable read.
Was not impressed with this. There were some interesting ideas, but the book seemed to read too fast - there was no chance to develop the characters, they were just instantly wanting to 'make love to each other'. Disappointing more than anything!
