I think many of the negative or more neutral reviews here are from non-Japanese language learners. If you just read the English translations of the examples you won't get much out of it.
I think this book does a phenomenal job of explaining in detail and with many examples how many terms are used in Japanese that explain cultural concepts that are quite alien to other cultures.
