Simon Scarrow is a UK-based author, born in Nigeria, and now living in Norfolk. He completed a master's degree at the University of East Anglia, and, after working at the Inland Revenue, went into teaching as a lecturer at City College, Norwich.
He is best known for his "Eagle" series. This is Roman empire military fiction, starting with the second invasion of Britain, and continuing with subsequent adventures in every corner of the empire. The stories are told through the eyes of two centurions, Macro and Cato. To date there are eighteen books in the series.
Scarrow has also written a series of four novels on the Napoleonic wars, focusing on the lives of Wellington and Napoleon.
I have recently finished reading this series of books about Macro and Cato, 2 soldiers in the Roman army around 50AD. It's funny because for most of my adult life I would never think of reading historical novels preferring modern day thrillers. However, as a kid I loved such books and about a year ago I stumbled across one of these books and decided to give it a go! For the next 12 months i consumed all of the series plus a few similar by other writers. The story follows the adventues of these two soldiers in various parts of the world and mostly involves retelling true Roman campaigns and battles. What I loved most was that I learned so much about the history of the time and the detail of how roman soldiers lived their lives. They are great adventures with heroic characters but if you like romance then this will not be for you as women hardly feature in the books! I was terribly sad when I finished the last in the series but have just learned a new episode is being released this month. I could read about Macro and Cato all day everyday so I think you are getting the picture of my review. Amazing books, brilliantly written, heroic deeds, great characters etc etc!
Although reading them one at a time as I bought them I found them ok. As soon as I read through them as a series I saw how awfully similar and boring they are. It feels like in every single action scene he is banged on the head and everything flashes white. And every 5 minutes the author is saying how superior the gladius is in close quarters fighting. Give it a rest seriously. I would recommend reading them one every now and then. repeat DO NOT read the whole series at once.
Ive been reading books from Simon Scarrow for some years, in particular the Eagle series. (Which I have read no less than 3 times!) They capture the mind and drag you into the pages to stand alongside Cato and Macro on their various dangerous missions throughout the Roman Empire. Through the twists and turns of scheming and political Rome; Simon Scarrow has created highly appetizing novels for all to thouroughly enjoy which are definatly difficult to put down!
Audibled the entire series over a few months. Spent a fortune but walking and listening better than sitting. Loved the stories and lost 8 covid lbs. Fun. I liked the characters. Stories predictable but comfortable in a pandemic. Waiting for the next book.
Excellente travail de recherche sur l'époque romaine. On a l'impression d'y être! Malgré le grand nombre de volumes, chacun relance bien l'intrigue associée aux 2 personnages principaux.
Simon Scarrow's plotting and characterisation is excellent. He is one of my all time favourite authors. If you like historical fiction you should read these books : )
