I can definitely imagine people hating this version of Peter Parker; he's a dark, brooding, violent, Batman-like vigilante with an unforgiving Punisher-y disposition and no sense of humor - kind of like the current DC cinematic universe in a way I suppose, which I can't say I'm an advocate for. Having said that, I truly did love this Back in Black arc, and I actually can't believe I've never read it before. I believe there's one arc left before the whole reboot into Brand New Day, and it sure does feel like a ramp-up into a grand finale: Spider-Man's unmasked as of Civil War, there's huge heart-pumping drama with Aunt May getting shot, Peter running around pulverizing everyone (once more like Batman would), and the whole family being chased from the men in blue - this time not as Spider-Man but as Peter Parker.

From an emotional perspective, the grief is portrayed accurately with frantic revenge-tinged close-ups, sparsely dialogued panels of Peter watching over Aunt May, and aggressive inner monologuing. Of course, it's a comic, so we're not expecting a Shakespearean tragedy, but nonetheless, I feel the dialogue speaks as truly as it could without being too literary while relying heavily on physical expressions and pacing. We almost forget we're reading a Spider-Man book as "super" people take a backseat to the human elements, which has been done before and is generally what makes a superhero book great (I'm personally never swayed by big action scenes and crazy cosmic nonsense.). Kingpin is perhaps the perfect choice of villain as Peter finds more heartache in the human part of his dual life, a fear he's always held and is now being played out as a result of his unmasking.

Peter to Fisk: "For all your money, for all your cruelty, for all your big talk... you don't have any real power. You can't fly, can't stick to walls, can't turn into living flame or stretch out across a twenty-foot room."

Not saying it's a perfect book as some elements were a bit too strange (blood transfusion for one), and some of the melodrama was overplayed. But I suppose much like the actual storyline is depicting, humanity is not perfect.

Perhaps they did the whole Brand New Day thing because they ran out of ideas. Peter's married, his identity's revealed - kind of the end of a storyline if it were a book series. I don't know how everyone felt about Straczynski's writing at the time, but I personally loved what I've read so far, and maybe I'll go back and read his whole run. Probably have to get past the artwork, but we'll see.

I do imagine the next volume, "One More Day," to be exactly as it should be, and I'm looking forward to it.

This story was so good! Its Spider-Man giving into his darker self after his Aunt May is shot and what he does after like wearing the black suit, beating on Fisk and humiliating him after he finds out he was the one who did this. The fight was brutal and just shows how dangerous Peter is and Fisk's reaction was something. He wasn't expecting it clearly. That was the best part. And then you could see him trying to move Aunt May to some other hospital as detectives start snooping around, and he commits' felonies and becomes the every thing he set out to fight against. Its a very great turning point and will determine the future of the character going forward. And the art is just dark, gothic, visceral, adrenaline-pumping and all! Just perfect!

This art Is weird, and I can't figure out who needs to buck up - I think it rests with the pencils (Kingpin's head looks more like Hammerhead), but the very flat tones could either be ink or colour. And two questions: when Peter's swinging around without a costume on, how can he spin webs with obviously-empty wrists? And, when Peter gets mad, do his gums always recede?

I used to think JMS wrote very authentic emotional moments. Here, Peter is such a one-dimensional caricature it's hard to take it seriously. And while he's working hard to convince us of Peter's pain, it's the laughable lines that get me, like "feel someone touching the web that has become my life". Or pointing out for the reader exactly how clever a writer he is, with "The symmetries tonight are so thick you could cut them with a knife.". It feels like first draft material, and while the revenge plot is a refreshing break from goody two shoes Parker, it's over dramatised.

Um, why would Wilson Fisk have a giant picture of himself on the walls of his prison cell? For someone so confident in himself, that's sadly contradictory. Hell, why are half the things happening the way they are? This plot is so full of inconsistencies I can't even work up the energy to feel anxious as the authorities close in.

Maybe it was an editorial edict to burn Parker beyond the point of recovery, or maybe JMS just lost track of a *good* idea and wrote himself into a corner. Either way this isn't as satisfying or believable as Bendis and Brubaker tearing Matt Murdock down, and only memorable in the poor execution.

Back in Black (ASM #539-543). Continuing straight on from the brilliant Civil War arc, this story puts Peter in the darkest place ever, as he tries to save his dying Aunt May and simultaneously confront her would-be killers. This continues to be JMS' Spider-Man at its best, as it delves deep into the characters of Peter and MJ and confronts them with an event as life-changing as what came before it. So where was JMS planning to go with this all? What was next? Sadly, we'll never know as this was effectively the end of his run. What follows is Joe Quesada's horrendous "One More Day" story, which ruined decades of Spider-Man storytelling and threw JMS' brilliant year of Civil War + Back in Black straight out the door [5/5].

PAD's stories are way too light-hearted for where Peter is [6/10], but the final confrontation with Jonah is excellent [8/10].

Maybe it's that I'm playing MGSV but I liked this one a lot; plenty of moral judgements and about the ethics of revenge. Very good to keep track of what happens to Peter Parker in the wake of Civil War.

#542, that is, the 4th in this arc, is insanely good.

İyi başlayıp kötü biten bir hikaye daha. Civil War sonrasında May vurulunca Peter'ın gözünü kin bürüyor.

This book was not what I expected, I read "What If? – Spider-Man: Back in Black" first before this one so I figured the "What If?" was a one off but this story educated me that Parker is intense in both situations.

The best part about this story is unlike Deku: THIS story shows 100% why Petter Parker is the best Spider-man and way more interesting. He goes to some dark places, he ponders things that's not traditional to his code, he even tell himself he will kill, he wants to, that mechanical arachnid DNA in him taking root.

We sometimes forget this guy is a mutate of one of the most terrifying hunters on the planet, if a wolf-spider were the size of a dog but proportionately small than you, you wouldn't stand a chance.

Parker is a walking hunting machine, he's not some cuddly hero, he's a genetic timebomb. And the fact that everything he does was not influenced by *you know who* despite the visual of his costume--- further shows the depth of Parker's grief when he's pushed.

I've been on a roll of reading Darker Spider-Man stories lately and this one of up there solely because of how Parker's struggle to take control of his own powerlessness & how effective he is when he stops giving a shit but just barely not losing his shit or does he?

This arc in a sentence is: "Peter Parker hunts." That's it, one chilling sentence.

Severely recommended.

Good and bad at equal measures.

World: The art is okay, it's fluid and kinetic making for a good Spidey book. I did find the facial expressions a bit off, especially the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man book. The world building is good and a natural consequence of the events of Civil War. I liked the change in tone and the pieces of new and old that are played at here. That being said the Sandman stuff was rough.

Story: Natural consequence of the events of Civil War. It's paced well and the tone and the plot is good. It's sad it's heavy and it's good for what it is suppose to be. That being said the Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man title is rough, it's pacey, it's pointless and just bad. The Eros stuff is okay, but the entire Sandman story is just pointless. The Annual was also fairly choppy.

Characters: I liked where Peter went in this arc, it's dark and different and I like it, the stakes were high and it was good. I didn't like the other title though, Sandman was a cartoon character and the change in tone of does not feel right with the rest of the series.

It was okay, but now we head to One More Day.

Onward to the next book!

I just have to say they really had a decent story going here until the last issue where the story just fell off a cliff. How do you go from issue 542 which was probably one of the best single issues of Spider-Man I've read so far and then the next issue you come up with that stupid plot? I dread the next story arc even more now. Even though I know it is going to be really bad the ending of this really gives me an idea of just how bad it is going to be. J. Michael Straczynski seems to have pretty decent highs, but extremely low lows. When he is bad he is one of the worst writers I've ever read.

Regardless of everything I think about his very inconsistent writing this was really good up until the end and was a good continuation from the Civil War arc. I'd recommend it.

A pretty good story with perhaps the only logical conclusion to Spider-Man revealing his secret identity to the world. The events here also lead to a need for a reboot. You could change the character into an anti-hero, but if you want to keep Spider-Man as is, you would need to erase the events of Civil War and Back in Black, or at least parts of them. Garney is a pretty good artist, and this novel matches Civil War in intensity and quality. Recommended as a follow up to Civil War and a precursor to One More Day/Brand New Day.

"NOT SO EASY IS IT, WHEN THE OTHER SIDE FIGHTS BACK? NOT AS EASY AS SHOOTING AN OLD WOMAN THROUGH A WINDOW FROM ACROSS THE STREET? IS IT?"
- Spidey (in black) confronts May's shooter.

Wow! This one's darker than usual. Like Batman, dark. Wilson Fisk hired a hitman to either kill Peter... or MJ and aunt May. Now May's on life support, and Peter's looking for revenge. A certain black suit's been retrieved from storage and s#!+$ gets real!
Not my usual brand of Spidey, but a total thriller. Five stars.

The covers are cool.

Apart from that, even though I am not a fan of this gritty dark grimdarking of Spiderman, it feels even worse knowing what comes after, the controversial cop out / reboot / awful retcon One More Day. This arc makes promises the future won't keep, and the ride isn't enjoyable by any means.

I have quite the taste for noir, but it doesn't suit the context, the character and isn't executed properly.

Dark and grim.
Peter goes on a vengeful crusade which would not look out of place in a Wolverine story.
He wears his black costume and fights in bitter silence, to send a message.
He is not making jokes, no, he is deadly serious.
I liked this.
I am not the biggest fan of Spidey, I think I am too old and grumpy now to take his usual optimism and humor serious.

I didn't ever thought that I can see spiderman acting like that.

Dark, but so real.

When you push a person to his limits, and make him suffer very bad consequences of things he done and thought was right, turn up against him like that it's obvious he'll be back in black, because there's nothing else to do, what would you do if your reason to live has changed?..

definitely understand that people aren't into this arc. This is not snarky one-liner Peter Parker this is an angry and brooding Peter Parker seeking vengeance. Coming off the Civil War arc with Aunt May shot Peter isn't playing around and I personally think it's a great read.
