Path of Light provides a fresh, superb, and penetrating overview of A Course in Miracles (ACIM), encompassing what it is, how it was written, what it teaches, and, most of all, how to live it. Veteran Course teacher, Robert Perry, has written this innovative exploration for the full spectrum of potential readers, from those who are simply curious about ACIM to those who are experienced students. Perry writes in a clear, straightforward fashion, and, like a storyteller, he uses simple words to relay the deep truth of the teachings of ACIM. More challenging than popular self-help summaries, yet more practical and engaging than a scholarly analysis, Path of Light will provide a new standard of reference on the most remarkable spiritual teaching originating in modern times. This is a skillful and elegant presentation from the warm heart and brilliant mind of one of the most respected teachers of A Course in Miracles. A softly illuminated portal that ushers us into the boundless room of light that is 'A Course in Miracles.' (Hugh Prather)
Well, it's hard to rate a book that is about a book. Robert Perry's Path of Light is actually a very good elucidation of the extremely dense and daunting A Course in Miracles. Unlike Marianne Williamson's A Return to Love which is simply inspired by some of the teachings of the course, Perry's book is a breakdown of all the core ideas presented in A Course in Miracles and how one should approach the course. And for that reason, I suggest it to anyone who is curious about the course or thinking of studying it. The verbiage of the course itself makes it very confusing to beginners so having such a guide is helpful. That said, while some of the ideas of the course that Perry writes about resonated with me, others did not feel right (the origin of the entire universe being of our ego and not of God, is one such point).
Perry feels that Jesus is indeed the entity that was channelled (though I should mention that this was something he came to after many years of familiarity with the course and not something he felt at first). My personal feeling and intuition at this point tell me otherwise. A psychologist wrote the course, that is very clear. It's very intellectual and though Perry praises the writing, I think it makes it very inaccessible to so many (including less intellectual folks who may nevertheless be ready to awaken).
I have a bone to pick with the part where he says that our ego may have difficulty with the course (p.199). While that may be very true, I feel like the structure of the course is set up in such a way to dismiss our reasoning (the very beginning of the workbook is set out to tell us that our thoughts and everything around us don't mean anything and essentially that our thoughts aren't to be trusted which makes me feel like I'm being brainwashed and not allowed to consult my own inner guidance call it intuition, connection to holy spirit, higher self, however you wish to call it over the authority of the text) and that if I dismiss something- it is said that my ego is resisting it. This really doesn't feel right and I wish he didn't perpetuate this idea. So saying that it's our ego is an easy way to keep an individual hooked when in fact it just may not be right for them...
This was a great primer to read before beginning Course in Miracles. Written, thankfully, in plain English it helped get my head around some of the more unusual concepts of the Course.
This book by Robert Perry is a helpful and understandable adjunct to A Course in Miracles. He has a web site that features his other "Course" related books and pamphlets: www.circleofa.org
