Can a hitman regain control of a situation after getting too close to a mark?
Eric Caldwell has been hired to assassinate scores of people over the years. Most, as of late, have been high profile targets requiring weeks of planning, and a perfect execution. So when Caldwell is asked by a science research corporation to take out one of it's own low level employees for leaking information to the competition, he expects this to be one of his easiest marks in recent years. As Caldwell begins research on his target, he finds a disturbing trend with the man's lifestyle that strikes a nerve with the assassin.
Caldwell breaks one of the golden rules for a hitman: Never get too close to a mark. The job would become anything but simple.
Loose Ends is a thriller/mystery novella that is nearly 17,000 words.
Cleaning up loose ends may have unintended consequences
A hired hit man who previously worked for the mafia. An innocent friend by his side. A corrupt corporation with leak. A gruff CEO with a mysterious and beautiful security agent. A target with questionable morals and a shady lifestyle. This is the cast of characters put together in Loose Ends, a thriller novella from debut author AJ Powers.
It's a short novella, borderline long short story (sorry for the oxymoron), but a very entertaining read. A hitman is sent to clean up a loose end, but finds he gets closer to the job than he expected. Good story flow, page-turning, and realistic dialogue and settings. Powers has extensive knowledge of weapons, but doesn't overwhelm the reader with technical details. Good character development, getting inside the main character's head in first person point of view, something I've seen many debut authors fail miserably at (first person isn't as easy as one might think). And of course, a nice twist at the end, leaving the reader wanting more of the story (sequel, perhaps?)
This is an absolute no-brainer priced at $.99; I'd certainly recommend Loose Ends for a quick, entertaining thriller. Oh, and Powers designed and created the cover art from scratch - an enviable talent to have.
Eric Caldwell is a quiet man with deadly intentions. You see he’s a professional hitman. By day he is a simple businessman running a small bar with his geeky sidekick Rebekah, but behind the scenes the two of them are an effective killing machine. They take great care making sure every “Loose end” is covered. They’re latest mark is a man whose hobby strikes a nerve with Caldwell making it a bit too personal for his profession.
Loose Ends is a well written thriller/mystery novella albeit short. The characters are well-defined and come alive on the pages. The story moves swiftly without any lags and the twist at the end leaves you pressing the next page button crying out for more. I would have liked to see more of the relationship between Caldwell and Rebekah. It would have been nice to learn a bit more of his past. All in all it was an enjoyable short read that I highly recommend.
AJ Powers "Loose Ends" is a no holds barred look into the mind and world of the contract killer. AJ sets the pace and doesn't let up until the end.
Eric Caldwell is a cold, calculating killer. When a big client sets him up for an easy job, things start to go wrong. The mark isn't what Eric was led to believe. He lets his guard down and decides to enjoy the hunt.
I'll stop here, as I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't takent he opportunity to read it yet. Suffice to say you will enjoy the ride.
A quick, easy read that just might leave a reader's fists curled in rage. Hired assassin Eric Caldwell stops at nothing to deliver to his clients in this short little piece by A.J. Powers, even when things get personal. Definitely a must-read!
