I love this captivating and heartwarming tale that children will be sure to revisit. The lyrical and repetitive narrative makes for a nice read-aloud. The animal tale follows similar themes that children will recognize (e.g. the little mice and bird trying to avoid getting eaten by the house cat). The illustrations are delightfully rich and detailed with a warm tone that fits with the holiday theme. The story also contains a nice message of being comfortable with who you are and using your own gifts rather than wishing you were like someone else. It's lovely in every way.

**Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Red Comet Press. Opinions are my own.

I am a huge fan of Briony May Smith, so I must say that the illustrations were lovely as expected! True delight - warm, cosy, sweet... The story, I must say, was very disappointing - it felt flat and disappointing.

When a robin egg falls out of its nest, landing in a garbage dump, the newly hatched bird is found by a family of mice who decide to adopt it, naming her Robin Robin and taking her back to their burrow. The burrow is warm and cozy and Robin quickly settles in, listening to the mice talk about crumbs - all kinds of crumbs, the crumbier the better. Crumbs are always a delicious treat, but in order to enjoy them, they have to sneak into the house where the Who-mans live, which would be easy except for one thing - a great big mean cat also lives there. Nevertheless, they all decide to sneak into the house and gets some crumbs to feast on.

There is just one problem - it's not easy for a bird to be as quiet as a mouse. Naturally, she always attracts the cat's attention and has to quickly make a run for the back door to escape. One night, around Christmas time, Robin runs right into the wings of a Magpie while escaping the cat. Robin may think she is a mouse, but Magpie recognizes her as a fellow bird and takes her home to his tree house.

After Robin explains why she was in the house, Magpie tells her about the Chrim-Cross Star that the Who-mens put on top of a spikey old tree up once a year, and how, after making a wish, the Who-mens get anything they want the next morning. Maybe if Robin and her mouse family could get the Chrim-Cross Star, they could all get their wishes in the morning, too. Robin would be a real mouse, Magpie would get all kinds of treasures for his tree house, and the mice would have all the crumbs they could want. There's just one hitch - and it isn't the cat.

This is such a heartwarming story about identity, inclusion, and family with plenty of humor but also a serious side to it. Robin is a jolly little bird, full of determination and pluck. She never gives up trying to be "as quiet as a mouse" despite being a bird. I loved how Robin discovers her true self, which is way better than the noisy, clumsy mouse she thought she was, and ultimately more useful for her mouse family and their crumb appetite. And I think she found a real mentor in Magpie. I'm sure young readers will love the illustrations, too. They are bright, bold, and colorful, with lots of detail to explore.

Robin Robin is a wonderful holiday story, but one kids will want to read all year round. Don't be surprised if it becomes a family classic.

Hello, friends! Our book today is Robin Robin, written by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please, and illustrated by Briony May Smith, an adorable picture book retelling of the new holiday Netflix special of the same name.

When little Robin’s egg is found by a family of mice, they decide to raise the little bird as a part of their family. Robin loves her parents and siblings, and tries everything she can to be an excellent mouse, especially when the family ventures into the “Who-man” house to stealthily search for crumbs. Unfortunately, Robin isn’t particularly skilled at being stealthy, and the family nearly gets caught by a ferocious cat. Feeling out-of-sorts about the incident, Robin tries once more to be a sneaky as a mouse, a choice that will lead her on an adventure of discovery – about “Chrim-Cross” stars, about a clever collector magpie friend, and most importantly, about herself.

A lovely tale of blended family and self-identity. Robin eventually learns how to embrace her strengths as a bird to help her magpie pal and her beloved mouse family achieve their dreams; it’s a satisfying and affirming outcome, and a lovely message for readers who may themselves feel out of place or stuck between two worlds. The text features some fun repetitive lines that make the story entertaining to read aloud, and the rich artwork has a nice blended of traditional and modern storybook aesthetics. The length is fine for a storytime, and JJ really liked this one – so much so that she wanted to watch the special afterward. Overall, a sweet holiday treat that is light on the Christmas but heavy on themes of familial love and self-acceptance, and we loved. Baby Bookworm approved!

ROBIN ROBIN is a sweet story about the holidays, blended family, and learning your strengths. When a mouse family finds a robin egg, they decide to keep her in the family, naming her Robin. Near the holidays, the mice are dreaming of all sorts of crumbs. They know the best crumbs are in the Who-man house, but they have to be wary of the cat. When the family goes to the house, Robin accidentally wakes the cat, and the mice must flee, heading home hungry.

Robin decides to go back on her own, but she is unable to escape the cat problem. When she finds a Magpie, he tells her about the magic of the Chrim-Cross Star that sits upon the tree. Who-mans wish upon that star and get whatever they want. Robin steals the star and brings it outside only to make her wish to be a real mouse - and not have it come true. But then, her family finds her and loves her as she is.

Robin has a new idea that will help her family, and they give it a go, filling their paws with crumbs while Robin distracts the cat from the window.

What I loved: This picture book has some important themes about blended families, embracing yourself as you are, and playing to your strengths that will resonate with young readers. The stuff around the who-mans and their Chrim-Cross Star is also very cute and sure to make children giggle. Combined with lush illustrations and an adorable lead character, this is a new fun holiday story that children will enjoy. As this is also a Netflix film, there can be some fun with revisiting the story after watching the movie.

What left me wanting more: The book moves pretty quickly, fitting the plot of the movie into the story. As it is a bit long and contains a lot of plot, I would recommend for older readers who can fill in the blanks better than the littlest ones.

Final verdict: Filled with lush and detailed illustrations as well as a cute plot, ROBIN ROBIN is a sweet holiday picture book about embracing yourself and family. Recommend for older picture book readers and anyone who enjoyed the film.

Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.

Even though there is a Christmas tree in this story, this is one that can be read and loved any time of year. A baby robin is adopted by a mouse family after falling into their burrow. As the mouse family raises Robin, they teach her all about mousing, but not much about birding. They love to sneak into the Who-man’s house to get all the delicious crumbs. On Robin’s first adventure, Robin finds that she is not very good at being sneaky, especially with a cat in the house.

Robin is determined to help her family and chooses to sneak back into the Who-men’s house all on her own. When danger lurks, Magpie swoops in to help and gives her the best idea of all, to just be herself! Robin will remind kids that it’s ok to be a little different, to find the good things about yourself, and stop wishing to be something or someone else.

Even though Robin is far from a mouse, she doesn’t realize that she has wings instead of paws and just wants to contribute to her family by gathering crumbs as they do. The illustrations and varied characters make this a fun read-aloud with lots of onomatopeias and silly character mishaps.

This is an endearing family story and one I am sure kids will want to read over and over again. Don’t miss the Netflix special airing on November 27, 2021.

Robin's egg falls onto the ground where it cracks open and she is discovered by a family of mice. They take her in and she tries to emulate them - especially being sneaky so she can help collect crumbs for meals. "Sneaky" is not her forte and after a few close calls she realizes what she *can* do - distract the cat while the mice collect the crumbs - and then everyone eats happily ever after. There's a tangent where she steals the star off the Christmas tree inside the humans' house, because a Magpie told her that it can grant wishes (and she wishes to be a mouse), but it doesn't mesh particularly well with the rest of the story and seems tacked on.

Maybe the Netflix film is better. This is choppy and disconnected, and the timing is all off. A baby bird does not just pop out of an egg, fully fledged and ready to go. Barely has she opened her eyes to the new world when she's taken by her new family on an expedition to scavenge crumbs. While the mice are accepting, there's no real sense that they've bonded with Robin at all - though they decide she can't be eaten, she's more of a pet ("Let's keep her"). It works ok as a story about self-discovery and embracing one's talents, though.

There is no way you can read this book without loving Robin Robin. Robin means well, tries their best, and never gives up, and just look at that silly walk in the flagged passages (they’re trying to walk like a mouse)–how can you not love Robin?! And the love for characters won’t stop there when it comes to the wonderful cast of characters that Kirkus says “any character in this picture book could be a main character in a different book.” I cannot wait to see the Netflix special because I know that I am going to fall in love with it, too!

I read this book after I watched the Netflix movie. It’s not the same story. It also has drawings instead of puppets. The movie is better with more details. But this is almost as good.

An orphan robin, adopted by a family of mice, figures out a way to help them get crumbs from a human house.
The part with the magpie is unnecessary, the story works without that tangent.

Reading this for 3 reasons- I've already read a few of Mikey Please books, it's a Netflix film, and my name is Robin.

Sweet story about a Robin raised by a mice family who discovers who she is from a clever Magpie. She uses a clever tactic to help the mice get their beloved crumbs.

I just watched the film, and highly recommend it. I liked it better than the book. It's a stop motion animated film that uses felt characters, hand crafted sets using natural materials, textiles and things like carved wood. It's visually wonderful and creative.

"The egg tumbled down, then stopped with a thump and a crack!"

During a terrible storm (and potentially a feline intervention), a young robin finds herself under the care of a rambunctious mouse family.

She feels right at home with her adopted parents and siblings - mostly. She wants to be like her family so bad but no matter how she tries, her inner "robin-ness" always messes that up.

But then the biggest heist of her life comes up - stealing CRUMBS from the big house. But this must be planned with precision - they need to break in, avoid the cat, take all the crumbs and sneak back out...

That can't be too hard, right? RIGHT?

This was a sweet Christmas tale about found families and accepting who you are.

I absolutely loved the art (but I knew I would, Briony May Smith always does such an amazing job). The expressions on all the animals' faces along with the beautiful scenery and color pallet - chef's kiss!

I also really enjoyed the plot - I liked watching Robin as she muddled through her life - trying to figure out who she was and who she wants to be.

I like how she found a balance between finding her place among her family and exploring her inner bird.

Overall, this was a rather sweet, quick tale!
