This is so stereotypically Adventist and has all the elements of a really bad book (the evil heathen natives are converted Christianity, put on Western clothes, destroy their gods and traditions, and embrace the God of the white man), but I loved it when I was a kid. Now that I've re-read it, I cringe to realize I loved this book so much.

This is a great book. Eric B Hare writes with humor, sensitivity and it very interesting to read. This is the story of Clever Queen. She is swapped to another family for food in the Karen tribe of Burma. As a baby she get sores all over her body and mama and grandma bring her to the dispensary to see Dr and MaMa ( his wife) Rabbit. They bathe the baby and treat hers sores which heal. Then they invite mama and grandma to bring her to their live in school when she is 7. So Clever Queen comes to the school at age 7 and she loves learning. They sing and many of the children play brass instruments.Travel is by ox cart and there are no cars or electricity. Half the year the land is flooded during monsoon season. Dr Rabbit tells Bible Stories and has pictures which he shows like a movie on a sheet screen. The picture of Bible stories, The World Wars and pictures of the world outside Burma.

Also this an interesting story of good versus evil. Eric B Hare (Dr Rabbit) and his wife and
children go to Burma as missionaries to the devil worshipers there. It is unbelievable what some of them believe, not only does it not make sense but many are originally controlled by devil worship of demons and Satan who plague them until they accept Jesus. Dr Rabbit administers to their wounds and physical needs and his wife Agnes is always caring for a mom or baby. The sad thing is many die or are maimed for life because they consult the demons until it is too late to help them. Both also administer to their spiritual needs as well.

Short chapters & easily distilled morals make this one a good worship time read.
