He is My Master follows the day-to-day life of Yoshitaka, a sex-obsessed 14-year-old with a major superiority complex and a uniform fetish to boot. After his parents die in an accident, Yoshitaka inherits the family fortune—and the family estate. Deciding that the musty old place needs some livening up, he fires the staff, intending to replace them with attractive, live-in maids. His dreams more than come true when three sexy girls—along with their pet alligator, Pochi—lay claim to the jobs.
He is My Master is a popular ongoing manga in Japan from Square Enix, the publisher of Full Metal Alchemist. It is also a popular anime that aired on Japanese TV in 2005.
I'm enjoying this series more than I expected to. I picked up the first couple of volumes of this for dirt cheap at a library book sale, and expected them to be trashy and fetish-y in a hopefully entertaining way. They're actually better than that, though.
He Is My Master is more of a parody of fan service series than anything else. Yes, it necessarily resembles that which it mocks, but there's a whole level of self-awareness and metatextual humor that one generally doesn't see in such series (I think. I admit that I haven't actually made a wide survey of the genre.) And so we get the manga creators occasionally commenting on the action, and references to other popular series and video games. This is a very otaku-friendly book.
I could attempt to comment on the story, but there's really no point. There is no ongoing plot, just setups for situations with comedic potential. It's the saga of three maids, their pervy 14 year-old employer, and a pet alligator that even the characters admit looks nothing like the real thing. Fun stuff!
The stories are clever and I like the art as well. I understand that the story was by the husband and the art by the wife from a formerly married couple. It's too bad they broke up because their work together was enjoyable.
