My debut young adult novel, Mercy Lily, debuted October 8th, 2011. You can download bookmarks from my website's Author Visits tab or the main page at www.LisaAlbert.com. I'm currently working on a middle grade novel and have several projects simmering. I'm the author of three nonfiction books and have a few more nonfiction projects brewing, too.
I also work in a K-8 shool library and love it. I'm a former dealer of antiques but still dabble in the business. I heart flea markets and yard sales!
This was informative and did what it was supposed to do: give me a feel for what Lowry is like as a person. As with many of our best writers, she was always telling herself stories, or actually writing. She did put away writing when her children were small as well as school. She went back to school and joined her by then older kids around the kitchen table to do homework. The biographer also covered a question often asked in classes these days: what is Lowry's method of working. It also covered many of her most well known books. Her first book was a Summer to Die which was fiction but at least partly based on the relationship she and her sister had. Her sister died of cancer in her 20s, not as a child as in the book but the pain is certainly based on her experience at that time. What I probably found most fascinating was that she took the photos that are on the cover of both her Newbery titles, Number the Stars and The Giver, as well as some other titles. She enjoys photography and has memories of her father enjoying photography. However, the book is mostly based on other accounts of her life, although an email interview with the author is included as back matter. That was probably the most interesting part of the book. Other than that interview and some interesting photos, there was nothing that made this book exceptionally good or bad. I needed a book to shoot through quickly as an antidote to the several really long books I've been reading! Now, back to those books! Recommended for school assignments. I really wish the publisher hadn't picked a series name "Authors Teens Love" since that just about forced me to put a perfectly adequate juvenile book in young adult where it won't be used nearly as much.
