As expected, our team of misfits from Deimon got trashed by the defending champions, but #21 has found his resolve to go up against Oujou's Shin; a rivalry is budding in earnest. In the meantime, the team is actively recruiting to fill crucial spots in the line-up, and they have receiver prospect who's a baseball washout.

it's the hi-jinks the team are in that gives this title its humor. Whether it's running an underground gambling den to fund its operations or kidnapping recruits to coerce into joining, it's a barrel of laughs all the way.

I did like how Sena and Sakuraba ended up being contrasts to each other, that was a neat way to give the game some heft even when the stakes weren't anything to care about. Especially how this volume set up a sort of rivalry between Sena and Shin in terms of speed and as a consequence maneuverability. We're also slowly expanding the team! Though the climax of it all isn't the greatest. This series is carried by Murata's art when it comes to intense action shots of impact and movement- his art at other times can be lackluster, Riichiro Inagaki's comedy almost never lands, the characters are flat and uninteresting. But at least there's some alright art, and everything else is passable enough to not be a complete let-down.

While I admit that Eyeshield 21 is basically a "popcorn" experience, which is mostly centered around somewhat obvious plot beats and big, broad feels, I do find myself often saying, "One thing Eyeshield does really well is..."

And for volume 3, one thing Eyeshield does really well is capturing the feeling of playing high school sports. While pro and other teams are certainly all about wins and losses and the specifics of their sports, high school sports are a little different. The players are more likely to be in close contact on a day to day basis, their time is limited by their schooling years. But also, it's the only chance a lot of these players will ever have. The winnowing of numbers from the high school to college levels is harsh, and there's no promise of making the team. And third ... they're just younger. They're generally not even adults yet. So there's this urgency and finality to each season, especially when you're in your "last" year. So while it's only really touched on a little bit here, this series is incredibly good about making every game have weight, and reminding you that every time a team loses, there are players on it who may never get to play a sport they love again.

And in this volume, it also perfectly captures the weird, unreal feeling that can come after the high of some big event.

OK, what else. Things I really liked:

1. Whether dictated by the author or decided on by the artist, the way they drew the parallels between Sena and Sakuraba, leading up to the event near the end of the Ojo game, was beautifully illustrated. I could see it in motion in my head.

2. Hiruma's team continues to get him to grow. I don't think he's kidding about what he says near the end of the Ojo game. But then he's willing to backseat that because he wants to believe in one of his teammates. :) something to remember for later.

3. We add another player. And the whole saga is kind of adorable. I love that Eyeshield is very much a "follow your dreams" manga ... but it also engages in a little bit of "Make sure you are re-evaluating your dreams to make sure they're still what's going to make you happy" which is a nuance that some stories avoid.

4. The final team-up between Sena, Shin and the new player in the last chapter of this volume is amazing. You won't believe that highschoolers can outrun an electric scooter necessarily, but you won't care. :D

Eyeshield 21: And They're Called the Devil Bats continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (17–25) of the on-going manga series.

The tankōbon concludes the Deimon Devil Bats and Ojo White Knights. Sena Kobayakawa manages to make a second touchdown but in the end, the Devil Bats loses by 68–12. The next day, he learns that they have to practice even harder for the Tokyo Autumn Tournament.

The Devil Bats needs a good receiver, and Sena Kobayakawa unexpectedly finds a great catcher named Taro "Monta" Raimon. At first, he declines to join the team but, during practice, as Yoichi Hiruma is looking for a receiver, Monta manages to catch his fastball with one hand. After witnessing that, Yoichi Hiruma persuades Monta to join the club, which he does after the captain says they need someone to protect Mamori Anezaki from the egoistic and harmful Eyeshield 21.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story. The narrative is getting somewhat more interesting and I particularly like how the mysterious Eyeshield 21 to justify their ends.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: And They're Called the Devil Bats is a wonderful continuation to a new series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

3 ESTRELLAS ☆☆☆

[NOTE: I’m rereading this entire series; I read it for the first time probably around a decade ago.]

I love the fake-out with "Our tournament is over because we lost... actually J/K, this tournament isn't the one that matters!" 😈

And Ahhhh Monta's introduction! I don't love his design early on in the series, but it eventually hits its stride and evens out and becomes one of my favorites. I've always loved Monta and his journey from Baseball to American Football... SPOILER FOR NEAR THE END OF THE SERIES: In this volume I LOVE that it's not just "YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS NO MATTER WHAT!!" Monta has to realistically grapple with "I love catching, but I'm clearly horrid at other things that Baseball needs... but can I still do what I love and am good at in a different way?" - YES bb! Look at you, letting your goals evolve so that you're not miserable!

Also, Monta's friendship with Sena is also super cute, and it's nice to see him on even footing with someone, haha.

LUCU BANGET!!!!

WOW BANGET GAK SIH!!! Karena sebagai pembaca pasti juga mikir ini adalah akhir, tapi ternyata baru permulaan??? Huhu bisa berjuang lagi T_T
Ketiga, KOCAK BANGET WOI!! Respon Sena tiap Hiruma dan Kurita berulah tuh yaampun...... the best sih!!
Keempat, pengenalan anggota baru!! Yashhh akhirnya ketemu main character lagi nih! ;D
Dan kelima, perlahan-lahan peran Sena jadi makin tampak, lewat dialog serius bersama tokoh lain. Serius suka banget...

Tapi ya ternyata dipikir2 emang kesannya cepet banget sih Sena bisa beradaptasi begitu mudahnya di klub football. Mungkin emg konsepnya adalah Sena sbg korban bullying udah terbiasa latihan fisik secara gak langsung ya, jadi gak parah2 amat aftereffect dari abis tanding tuh. Hmm, mungkin.

Oke kayaknya volume selanjutnya bakal pencarian anggota baru deh alias semakin lucuu!!! (≧▽≦)

2025 reread:

This volume doesn't have as much action, but the human, emotional moments are really good. Everything going on with Sakuraba is so good and Sena crying in the classroom got me yet again.

Shin and Sena teaming up in front of the big motorcycle explosion was very funny and I was gagged that a character that's been mentioned but not seen has actually appeared multiple times already lmaoooo I never would've known if I hadn't re-read it

I loved Rui's character arc the first time around so I'm excited he's here!

As I figured it looks like we’re going to start to build up the Demon Bats which should be fun, I will say I’m not a fan of Raimon from what we got but I like his story of having to leave baseball, it goes to show you how difficult sports can be. I will say the Kurita bullying needs to stop, he’s doing his best and loved to play. Wish they had more tournament games cause this next game is an exhibition and well there are no stakes, except 5 million that Hiruma apparently has lol

This manga is an odd one. It starts off oddly generic, a few stupid laughs mixed in, but by the third volume, I've fallen in love with not only the story-thus-far, but also the characters. The characters are so diverse and we're only 3 volumes into the story. If you enjoy manga in any genre or format, this is a must read.

YAHAAA!!!

Do you know Kobayakawa Sena? How about Eyeshield 21 from the Deimon Devil Bats?

Eyeshield 21 is a manga about american football written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. It became an anime on Aril 6, 2005 and ended with 145 episodes on March 19, 2008. This anime is sponsored by NFL Japan and aired in countries like korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The story revolves around high school student Kobayakawa Sena who loves football and has a incredible talent when it comes to running, he has an intense agility. He had a remarkable talent in running because of bullies. In his younger days he was taught by his friend Riku to run away from bullies that is why he developed his talent. This caught the eye of Deimon High School Football Captain and quarterback Yoichi Hiruma who forces Sena to become the team’s running back. Hiruma and his friend Kurita who is also a member of the Devil bats swore to be in the Christmas bowl so they try hard to get teammates who are interested in playing American football.

Slowly but surely the team recruited potential players such as Taro Raimon a baseball player who excels in catching, he became the team’s wide reciver and the so-called Ha-Ha Brothers who became the defensive linemen. The Deimon Devil Bats made a mark to the people watching them and made rivalry in other schools like the Ojo White Knights.
Sena and the rest of the Devil Bats successfully entered the Chrismas Bowl which they have dreamed off and competed against the American football team led by Panther.
The series concludes with Sena becoming the captain of the Deimon Devil Bats when Hiruma and Kurita go off to college. All of the main characters are shown in the final chapter to be in college or playing amateur-league football while maintaining a job.

Watch the anime and read the manga, so you can experience the thrill of this American Football anime.

Despite having lost to the Ojo White Knights, Sena is pleased that he managed to get past Shin just once. He admires the guy as an athlete and wants to be like him one day. As his team regroups and tries to prepare for autumn, they recruit another player: Raimon Taro is a baseball fan whose ability to catch is phenomenal but his other baseball skills are terrible. Because baseball needs most of its players to be able to do everything, this poor kid keeps getting passed over, but in football, just being a catcher would be fine. He refuses to join football, though, more determined than ever to be a baseball player, but when Hiruma sees his catching skills and woos him, he finally joins (though a miscommunication about his name has him being called "Monta" for the rest of the series). Sena and the others train for autumn by setting up an exhibition match against local punk team Zokugaku Chameleons (with a little help from Hiruma antagonizing their captain, linebacker Habashira). Oddly enough, Sena finds himself having to defend the honor of the team that just beat him. . . .

Life goes on after losing, so I really like that they picked up and found a way to make themselves better for next time. Monta's a great addition to the team (and I like that he's short like Sena), and everybody's got a history as well as a developing future with the team or as one of their opponents. I love the hints at history between Hiruma and Kurita, and how these characters we don't know much about yet are floating around the periphery making references to rivalries and backgrounds we're sure to know more about in the future.

Hellooooo Monta!

Like I think I've mentioned before, I have read the first ninety or so chapters of this manga previous to beginning to purchase it. And Monta , man, Monta is just the best. He's just so great. I love him. I can't wait until we get to that part where Jumanji becomes important, because I also love him.

Seriously, though, I love this series. It's so funny, and just - sports manga is my favorite, man. I say that, while I've really only read this series and I've mostly just watched sports anime. But I plan on reading the manga! Either way, I greatly enjoy this series, and I can't wait to get my hands on future volumes.

Part 2 of the blowout game against the White Knights. Sena and the Devil Bats experience a crushing defeat and exit from the Christmas Bowl competition. The off season does them a bit of well though, as they work towards recruiting baseball club outfielder Monta as their new Wide Receiver.
Definitely a lull volume in the series. The second half of the White Knights blowout game is the only action in the volume. Most of it is just talking and setup for the next season of games. 2 here, but nothing to keep me from wanting to read more.

Although it's pretty obvious to anyone who enjoys football that there are some inaccuracies, this is still a fun and interesting take on a sport not so popular overseas. The characters are dynamic and the story is fun, albeit a bit straightforward. Still, it's an interesting read.

Monta: It'd be uncool to give up on baseball for american football.
Hiruma: Ok, but aren't you willing to be cool by choosing to be uncool?
Monta: THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE, OK I'M IN!!!

(Also, Sena definitely has a crush on Shin, like buddy we can all see it)
