A pulp adventure story that offers a highly imaginative mix of genres. At its heart CHARIOTS OF FIRE is a slice of sword and sorcery fantasy in which an ancient Central American tribe find themselves mixed up with visiting spacemen waging a war on one another. The narrative is lean and action-packed and a lot of the fun comes from the way the protagonists have no idea how they're being manipulated by the futuristic races. The description of future technology - lasers, bombs - from an ancient viewpoint is also well handled. Two sequels, THRONE OF FIRE and SPEAR OF FIRE, completed the trilogy. I have no idea how much involvement prime editor Parry had in writing this, but I suspected he handled the amusing, Von Daniken-styled 'true' introduction.
I had no idea what kind of book this would be when I bought it at the sci fi bookstore in West Roxbury. The premise from the back of the book was about aliens meddling with the natives in ancient Peru. Then the book starts with the premise that the story you are about to read is actually based off a manuscript found in a cave near Cuzco, and is actually fictionalized truth.
With that setup, it was a pleasant surprise to get this science fiction tour de force of a Conan-like hero travelling the world and doing battle with, well, everything, from tribes to monsters to gods. You've got: spaceships, sea voyages, lusty women, piranhas, sea monsters, pyramids, energy healing, talking severed heads, nuclear weapons, demon apes, Amazons, crocodiles, ship to ship combat, storms, laser guns, and lots of sex. This book has it all. Can't wait to read the next two in the series.
