although i don't usually read this type of book i was grabbed and pulled into the story from the first page. i found myself intrigued and fasinated by the historical facts in the story and the characters were a joy to get to know and watch them grow into their own.this was a truly wonderful book. the characters were intriguing and full of depth and vitallity. it was very easy to become emotionally connected to each of the characters and to empathize with them and what they were going through. the plot was also complex and stimulating and was not one of those that you could solve in the first 5 minutes but it left you guessing until the end as to who did what. a truely great story by a gifted writer. if this is the type of book that you enjoy then this is the book for you.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Just a great espionage thriller adventure. Really like the historical aspect with ancient Assyria and Jerusalem as well as the WWII intrigue. Reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Couple of fun twists along the way as well. Great summer read. I've also actually seen Sennacherib's Prism at the Oriental Institute in Chicago, so that was a really fun real-world link.
The Constantine Covenant is a very intriguing novel. Historical Fiction has always been one of my favorite categories to read and this particular novel did not disappoint. Aiden Crisp, the author of the book, has a very dynamic and complex writing style that is very descripitive and unique. His differs from many of my other favorite authors in that his writing is focused on strong vocubarly and very strong dialect. Crisp’s descriptive plot and details have a unique way of painting a vivid picture in the mind of his readers allowing them to visual the story the way he had intended them to. This also translates over to his characters. Aiden Crisp’s characters have very well constructed personalities and he gives good insight as to who the characters are individually, allowing for a deeper understanding of what is taking place in the story. Although the story takes place through the eyes of many characters , Matt Hart is the main character and he has a very unique story of his own in how he got to where he was in the novel. Understanding this characters past was crucial to the plot in the end of the story, and Crisp does a good job at showing the readers who Matt Hart is, resulting in a very well developed character. He also shows us the personalities of the supporting details who can be both loved and hated creating an equal balance of tension and suppression throughout the story. The story in itself is very well developed and also can be very hard to read. Being a genre that it is, not all portions of the story are true, but they are all very realistic and very well could happen in the future. The story was constantly unraveling new mysterious events that constantly keeps a reader involved. Being more evolved in vocabulary and description of the plot, this book is better served to the older population or individuals with a higher set of reading abilities and skills in general. It is a very interesting story that can capture the interests of many historical literature fans, which is the recommended group for reading the aforementioned novel.
Of course a book about an ultimate weapon would have fantastical elements, this book no exception. But beyond main character Matt Hart surviving several episodes of total destruction around him, author Aiden Crisp saves the most bizarre and unrealistic reveal for the very end. Which is a shame because it actually undermines what had been developing into a solid story. Sure the Nazis efforting to harness an ancient weapon toward world domination smacks with a bit of black comedy, even if there may have been an element of historic truth to those efforts. But Crisp at the end takes historical fiction to the histrionic, knocking a star or two off the final rating and possibly dead-ending future viability in this genre. Those of serious mind enough to read this 535 - page exhaustive span of a tale will not appreciate the Scooby-Doo or GI Joe shenanigans in the final 2 chapters. Not looking to spoil. The most I can say is read the book to find out, but don't blame me after you have.
The race is on between American special agent Matt Hart and a rogue Nazi leader, to find a powerful ancient weapon. Is this the legendary weapon that helped the Jews to defeat the Assyrians in 701 BC. Is this the legendary "Hand of God". A good first novel, but I hope Mr Crisp, a pseudonym for some unnamed writer, gets better with his next book, because he has a lot of potential.
I bought this book the day it came out, and read it in a few days. I always look forward to this author's works. Not only does he tell a good story with believable characters, his research is excellent. I love WWII thrillers, and hope he writes more. I also highly recommend his novel "Sink the Shigure"
I liked the historical aspect. It was an easy read and reminded me of Indiana jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. The author sure seemed familiar with the military.
Really enjoyed this thriller. A cut above the rest. Story line kept me very interested and characters were great. Would enjoy reading more by this author, but I think this is his only so far.
Your basic "Nazis searching for a secret weapon" thriller. Needless to say, after a lot of treachery and hero being beat up on numerous occasions, the Nazis are squelched.
