Rate this book
Losing our connection with Spirit may be the biggest problem we suffer from today. We want to face our challenges and disappointment with grace; be creative and inspired; feel excited by a purpose; and live fearlessly through an intuitive, guiding wisdom. We want to love and feel loved, and realize genuine peace . . . but as much as we desire a significant spiritual breakthrough and long to know our Divine selves, we’re still not making the commitment that will ensure our success.       We want the gifts, but we’re not engaging in the practical work necessary to obtain them, so we remain stuck and more frustrated than ever. We know a lot about the power of Spirit, yet we aren’t actually experiencing it. And we cannot do so through intellectual pursuits alone. In fact, we can only experience it through a deep, intentional daily practice of connecting with Spirit.       When you truly make this connection, you’ll realize that it’s the most authentic, lasting power you have in your life. In this enlightening book, spiritual teacher Sonia Choquette will show you that even though you can’t control the outside world, with the power of your Spirit, you can create a sense of purpose within that brings about profound contentment and personal peace—no matter what is going on around you.

Evidently, I started this book a year ago. I made it to 39% and forgot about it. While looking at my library, I stumbled upon this book, again. Why? Was it just to help me meet my book challenge or was there another purpose? I continued to read this book, paying close attention to what was being said. All kinds of things sprung up in my spirit. What was I really reading? Is this my spirit, or a divine/mystical spirit or the Holy Spirit being discussed in this book? It was contemplation time...especially on my part.

I believe in the spirit realm, after all we are, according to the Word of God, spirit beings housed in earthly bodies with a soul. Does it matter which spirit we are in touched with? I tend to lean upon the Holy Spirit of God. I'm a little weary delving into unknown spirits for guidance. But if one is truly not conscionable about spirit and just floating through life aimlessly, this book is not a bad source for awakening to the spirit realm. It's insightful, challenging, thought provoking and inspirational. The journal activities are remarkable. Such handy tools in handling life. Some things I will try and others I wont, but this is a matter of my spiritual choices.

Well written about people experiencing life and suggested ways to handle similar events by Spirit. I recommend to pray while reading. Extrapolate what is for you and ignore that which isn't. I believe joy is contentment, in Jesus, even when going through devastation. This books' definition of joy may be a little different. But this is a good guide to joyful living. Sound confusing...don't let it. Just pick up the book, read it. Some sound advice. Just call on Wisdom for what is needed in your life.

Sonia Choquette has been one of my favorite authors for many years. I've always enjoyed her books and the title of this one, The Power of Your Spirit, got me curious especially when combined with the subtitle, "A Guide to Joyful Living."

When the book arrived for me to review, I wondered if Sonia could have done it again? Would I enjoy reading her new book since I've read several books by her? The answers to these questions were "Yes!" and "Yes!"

Sonia is a great storyteller and she weaves in stories that teach us from the examples of what lessons she or the people in the story learn from what has happened in their lives.

She had me curious from the first two paragraphs of the introduction. In them she describes a movie (that I've seen) which is about a tour guide in Greece who has lost her kefi, which is a Greek word for "spirit."

Sonia says, "The film reminded me that the idea of losing your connection to spirit isn't all that unusual." She goes on to say that she encounters many lovely, generous, and caring people who feel lost, disillusioned, and powerless.

In this book, she guides readers through four stages she says we must pass through on the way to reconnecting with our own spirit.

The four stages are:

Awakening

Discovery

Surrender

Flow

For most of us the journey is gradual but she says it's also possible, though rare, to move through all four stages in one dramatic shift.

In "How to Use this Book" Sonia says, "Take time and enjoy the process. Ponder the questions and stories throughout." She also says to be sure to implement the daily practices for at least 40 days.

One thing she repeats through the book is that you must change what you do and not just read books expecting your life to change. She gives an example of a woman who kept reading more books but wasn't putting what she read into practice. It's with a daily practice that we change the frequency of our vibration.
Sonia reminds us that we are all students. Each of us faces challenges and the stories in this book can help us learn through OPE (other people's experience).

In this book, Sonia stresses the importance of how we breathe. Shallow breathing – and even holding our breath – can keep us from feeling connection with our spirit.

"The preamble to our awakening is marked by a growing sense of overwhelm, exhaustion, anxiety, restlessness, impatience, irritation, depression, and complete victimhood. In other words, it's a feeling that life is a struggle, and there's nothing we can do about it."

Throughout the book Sonia has questions for us to answer which are best written in a journal. She also says to invite your spirit — your most authentic self — to answer them.

After answering the questions she guides you to close your eyes and to calmly breathe through your nose in a deep way that feels relaxed and wonderful. In fact, as she says, it can help you feel calm, connected to Source, peaceful, and energized all at the same time. She calls this "connected breathing" and it is a technique she explains in the book. I love how it makes me feel! Sonia suggests you do it for 15 minutes. It is a way of breathing that connects the breaths and connects you with your spirit. I've heard that the word inspire means to breathe in — and it feels inspiring to breathe this way.

Reading about "connected breathing" helped me to realize it's what I do — and feel — when I do my 15 minute meditation each morning. As Sonia says, using a timer allows you to relax. What I realized while reading this part of the book was how good it feels to do this "connected breathing" at other times during the day — or night — any time I notice my breathing has gotten shallow or that I'm feeling tense and find I'm holding my breath.

Sonia says, "To surrender to the power of Spirit, you must listen to your heart and admit how you feel, first to yourself and then to others, even if your truth makes you or those around you uncomfortable, angry, or afraid." She goes on to say, "To live in alignment with your Spirit is to live your truth and build your life upon it."

"Live Your Love"

As Sonia points out in this part of the book, none of us knows how long we have on this planet. A powerful thing to do is to make a list of all the things you want to do or experience before you leave this life. I love her suggestion to put the list in a prominent place and plan to do one of them — or at least part of one of them — each day. As she points out we really don't have time to put off our dreams for someone else's demands. I suggest we all take her advice and begin to do the things on our list!

"Go with the Flow"

I found this part of the book a great reminder for me when I begin to want to control life: "Make a habit to relax. Let go. Take a breath and look around. Enjoy the view. Accept life as it unfolds rather than try to force it in a particular way."

"The Ebb"
"The greatest challenge to staying in the flow comes when you encounter 'the ebb,' which is any change, expected or unexpected, that leaves you feeling threatened and insecure because you aren't sure what's coming next."

Ebbs are part of life and they come when our life shifts.  As Sonia points out, ebbs instigate growth — they invite us to become aware of what's holding us back and they help to move us forward in the direction we're meant to go. They lead us into our next experience of being in the flow.

There is an inspiring quote by Earl Nightingale that Sonia included in the section on the flow: "All you have to do is know where you're going. The answers will come to you of their own accord."

The book ends with an inspiring list of choices we can make as part of our daily practice. Sonia suggests we write the list in our own handwriting on a beautiful piece of paper and read the things on the list out loud daily.

Do I recommend this book? YES.

I listened to the audiobook... and I ordered the book afterwards because I want to read it again! It is the first spiritual book that I am reading/listening to that gives you a specific path to follow to reach your spiritual self, start listening and acting upon your intuition and poses a bunch of different questions for self-reflection. It is full of examples and other people's storys - all of which reminded me of myself or a friend or a family member. Through Sonia's words, I felt that making a connection with the spiritual world is easy and accessible to all of us, and not only limited to the few. It gave me hope and joy, even only by reading it, that by tapping into my intuition I could find the answers to almost everything that can come up in life.

I think losing our connection with Spirit may be the biggest problem we suffer from today. We get attached to others, and lose sight of ourselves. This book awakened my spirit again. I couldn't put it down, and read it in one day.
We want to face our challenges and disappointment with grace; be creative and inspired; feel excited by a purpose; and live our best lives, without fear and hesitation. Trusting myself, and my own intuition took me years. I know I'm being guided internally, and she validated everything I've ever known. I love Sonia's insight, wisdom, and experience with the spiritual realm. She's hands down, one of my favorite writers in spiritual matters.

I was looking forward to reading something spiritual. It's about God and prayer. That will be your answer. Reading the part "false Gods" really threw me, as this is very discriminatory. We are all individuals who have our own beliefs of what Spirit and the Universe mean to us.

I have loved all of Sonia Choquette’s books. I find them inspiring, engaging, and relatable. This one will be a good choice if you are interested in the personal reflection journaling exercises that accompany each chapter. If you aren’t, you may benefit more from one of her other resources. Recommend audio as Sonia has a pleasant delivery that leaves me feeling I’ve finished a helpful session with a trusted advisor I’d enjoy having as a friend.

HIGHLIGHTS:
1. We sense the freedom from our anxieties and fear and cannot help but follow the light of Spirit.

2. The worse consequence of a life disconnected from the spirit is that we lose touch with our deepest sense of personal creativity, which is the spark of Spirit in action.

3. Make a daily habit, a regular spiritual practice, to open yourself up and respectfully ask for all available assistance from the subtle realms of Spirit so that you may continue to grow and expand to your highest potential every single day.

4. Need to shift priorities in order to move forward.

5. Flow is faith in action.
- It is a natural consequence of living as a Divine spiritual being, expressing your most authentic self, and following your intuition.

6. Divine being means: to live as a full creative partner with the Universe, setting an intention and then being open to the inspiration and guidance for that intention to be realized.

7. The more you apply observant breath to your thoughts, the more quickly you will break free from unproductive negative thoughts and enter the clear, expanded creative space of your Spirit.

8. Personal Altar: serves as an anchor for you to practice setting your personal vibration so that it resonates with the flow of Divine Source.

9. Accepting death is the ultimate surrender and the highest form of transformation to the Spirit.
- We have no choice. When we accept death to the best of our ability, we are given the most powerful gift of life—the freedom to fully live as our authentic selves.

10. People will need to cross your path so that you can practice living as a Divine conscious being.

Straightforward and relatable account of how to stay in touch with your Spirit. I love her writing style, which depicts such authenticity, while stating simple truths in a fresh, inspiring way. Don't know how it is that I have not come across her before, as she appears to be quite prolific.
