Rate this book
Sayings and practice of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) regarding the practical life of a Muslim classified by subject, e.g. prayer, fasting, social relations, purification, etc. Fully annotated Arabic Text, with English Translation and explanatory notes. Contains 690 Hadith the majority (513) of which are from the Sahih Bukhari. Each chapter commences with verses of the Holy Quran, having a bearing on the particular subject of that chapter. A unique feature is a summary, following the quotations from the Holy Quran in which the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Hadith on that subject are discussed and correlated. As every Hadith in that chapter is listed in the summary, the reader, by consulting the summary, will be able to find the Holy Prophet's guidance on a particular point without having to go through the entire chapter. -- "A Manual of Hadith is, in reality, a digest of Islam, being an excellent collection of the Quranic quotations and significant sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad on numerous subjects which almost cover the whole range of human experience... will be considered in the religious world as a standard work of enduring value and a lucid exposition of the Muslim Culture". - The Tribune, Lahore, Pakistan -- "His great zeal for Islam has enabled him at his present advanced ago to produce yet another work of great interest and importance, viz, A Manual of Hadith. It is a collection of the traditions of the Prophet arranged according to their subjects such as Faith, Revelation, Prayer, Alms, Fasting, Jihad, Marriage, Gifts, Wills, Inheritance, Food and Drinks, Ethics and the Muslim state. I feel that the hadith pervert the message of the Quran but any commentary after the fact is subjective, essentially.

This seems a well curated selection of Hadith with illuminating commentary. I'm convinced now personally that the Hadith are indeed essential to Islam, and appreciate the context that this book provided - of course, not that my opinion on this matter should be given much regard, just sharing my personal conclusion on what I know is a tricky subject. These Hadith continue to bear out that Islam is a religion of peace and mercy, of scholarship and pursuit of knowledge, of living a life of charity and decency.

This edition accompanies the Quran translation/commentary authored by Maulana Muhammad Ali. This "Hadiths" are oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Hadith collections are regarded as important tools for determining the Sunnah, or Muslim way of life, by all traditional schools of jurisprudence.
