Richard Sennett has spent an intellectual lifetime exploring how humans live in cities. In this pair of essays he visits two of the world's greatest cities at crucial moments in their history to meditate on the condition of exile in both geographical and psychic space: the Jewish Ghetto of Renaissance Venice, where state-imposed outsiderdom was translated into a rich community identity; and nineteenth-century Paris, a magnet for political exiles, where the experience of displacement seeped into the city's culture at large.

About the author

Richard Sennett has explored how individuals and groups make social and cultural sense of material facts -- about the cities in which they live and about the labour they do. He focuses on how people can become competent interpreters of their own experience, despite the obstacles society may put in their way. His research entails ethnography, history, and social theory. As a social analyst, Mr. Sennett continues the pragmatist tradition begun by William James and John Dewey.

His first book, The Uses of Disorder, [1970] looked at how personal identity takes form in the modern city. He then studied how working-class identities are shaped in modern society, in The Hidden Injuries of Class, written with Jonathan Cobb. [1972] A study of the public realm of cities, The Fall of Public Man, appeared in 1977; at the end of this decade of writing, Mr. Sennett sought to account the philosophic implications of this work in Authority [1980].

At this point he took a break from sociology, composing three novels: The Frog who Dared to Croak [1982], An Evening of Brahms [1984] and Palais Royal [1987]. He then returned to urban studies with two books, The Conscience of the Eye, [1990], a work focusing on urban design, and Flesh and Stone [1992], a general historical study of how bodily experience has been shaped by the evolution of cities.

In the mid 1990s, as the work-world of modern capitalism began to alter quickly and radically, Mr. Sennett began a project charting its personal consequences for workers, a project which has carried him up to the present day. The first of these studies, The Corrosion of Character, [1998] is an ethnographic account of how middle-level employees make sense of the “new economy.” The second in the series, Respect in a World of Inequality, [2002} charts the effects of new ways of working on the welfare state; a third, The Culture of the New Capitalism, [2006] provides an over-view of change. Most recently, Mr. Sennett has explored more positive aspects of labor in The Craftsman [2008], and in Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Cooperation [2012].

Μικρό σε έκταση-και διαστάσεις-βιβλίο (βιβλίο τσέπης,φανταστείτε) το οποίο ασχολείται με το τι σημαίνει να είσαι ξένος.
Στο πρώτο δοκίμιο («Το εβραϊκό γκέτο στη Βενετία:Οι εξόριστοι φτιάχνουν μια πατρίδα») μας μεταφέρει στη Βενετία των αρχών του 16ου αι. δείχνει πώς καταφέρνει κάποιος να φτιάξεις μια πατρίδα σ’ έναν εχθρικό τόπο.Το βρήκα ενδιαφέρον που ασχολήθηκε ο Sennett με το συγκεκριμένο λαό (τους Εβραίους),για του οποίους-ας είμαστε ειλικρινείς-δεν έχουμε και την καλύτερη άποψη.Μου άρεσε που έκανε σύνδεση των Εβραίων με τις πόρνες της εποχής,λόγω των διακριτικών που έπρεπε να φοράνε για να ξεχωρίζουν απ’τους υπόλοιπους πολίτες, όπως και η-αναμενόμενη-ανάλυση του σεξπηρικού έργου «Ο έμπορος της Βενετίας».Γενικά,μέσα σε λίγες σελίδες και με απλό τρόπο έδειξε ότι παρά το γεγονός ότι οι Εβραίοι είχαν τόσο δικαιώματα λόγου όσο και χωρικά δικαιώματα,δεν έγιναν ποτέ οργανικό κομμάτι της Βενετίας.
Στο δεύτερο δοκίμιο («Ο ξένος»),το οποίο το βρήκα ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρον απ’το πρώτο,ο Sennett ξεκινάει με μια ανάλυση του πίνακα «Το μπαρ στα Φολί-Μπερζέρ» του Edouard Manet για να αναφερθεί-μεταξύ άλλων-στον Herzen,τον Οιδίποδα και τον εθνικισμό του 19ου αι. για να δείξει ότι ο ξένος-ακόμα και αν η εξορία ήταν επιλογή του-μέσα απ’ τον κίνδυνο της μνήμης και της λήθης,αντικρίζει κάποιον που δεν είναι ο εαυτός του.Και πόσο δύσκολο είναι να βρίσκεσαι σ’έναν τόπο και η πατρίδα να βρίσκεται πάντα κάπου αλλού.Κρατάω και τη φράση που βρίσκεται στο οπισθόφυλλο της έκδοσης: «Ήταν αναγκασμένοι (οι ξένοι) πλέον να βρουν για τη ζωή τους ένα νόημα στο ίδιο το γεγονός του εκτοπισμού τους,στο γεγονός ότι ήταν ξένοι».
Νομίζω αξίζει να διαβαστεί γενικά.Πόσο μάλλον αν αισθάνεστε ξένοι σ’ έναν τόπο.Μ’έβαλε σε πολύ σκέψη,γιατί συνειδητοποίησα κάτι περίεργο.
*ακολουθεί βιωματικό Υ.Γ:Δεν αισθάνθηκα ποτέ ξένη στα διάφορα μέρη που έχω ζήσει,χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι έγινα ένα με τον κάθε τόπο.Αισθάνομαι,όμως,ξένη απ’την εφηβεία μου στο μέρος που μεγάλωσα και έχω περάσει τα περισσότερα χρόνια της ζωής μου.Και αυτό μάλλον είναι χειρότερο.Απ'την άλλη,θεωρώ ότι την πατρίδα την "φτιάχνεις" εκεί που αισθάνεσαι ένα με τον τόπο και τους ανθρώπους,δεν είναι κατ'ανάγκη εκεί που γεννήθηκες και μεγάλωσες.Οπότε,μάλλον είμαι στην αναζήτηση ακόμα.

Hacía mucho tiempo que no leía ensayo propiamente dicho y me aventuré con este. Me gustaría decir que llegó a mis manos por equivocación, ya que yo había pedido El extranjero de Albert Camus y la persona que me lo regaló me trajo el libro con el mismo nombre pero escrito por Richard Sennett. Por lo tanto, no lo conocía de nada y dije "malo será" (expresión de mi tierra que significa que "esperas que algo pase"). Leí la sinopsis y me llamó bastante la atención, así que en vez de devolverlo y cambiarlo por el que yo quería, me lo quedé. Y ahora, después de unos meses, el azar hizo que lo leyese.

Sin ser experta en sociología, antropología o filosofía, he de decir que disfruté bastante de las reflexiones que plantea este ensayo. Nunca me había parado a pensar en la identidad del extranjero (llegado a este punto por cualquier circunstancia) o de la sociedad nativa de un lugar. Tampoco el propio concepto de lugar como identidad de nación.

Si os gustan estos temas del extranjerismo, el concepto de nación, de la identidad propia, etc. desde un punto sociológico este es vuestro libro. Y aunque no sea vuestro tema favorito, como es mi caso, si al leer la sinopsis os pica la curiosidad dadle una oportunidad. A mi me resultó una lectura muy interesante.

İlk bölümde Venedik Yahudi gettosundan yola çıkıp , Cortigiane (o dönem escortları) ve Venedik Alman gettosuna ilişkin tarihi bilginin peşinden, etkilerini anlatıyor. Gettoların sürgün için inançla mekanı kademe kademe özdeşleştiren ve hem bastırma hem özdeşleşme mekanları olduğunu gösteriyor. Buralarda sürgünün meşruiyetten ziyade o sınırlar içinde hoşgörü hakkına sahip olduğundan bahsediyor. İkinci bölüm , Edouard Manet’in bir tablosunun analizi ile başlayan ,sürgün veya yabancının yerinden olmak kavramına farklı bakışlar getirdiği ilginç bir bölüm. Sürgünün değişiminde asimile olmanın eziciliği ile köklere bağlı kalmanın özlemini karşılaştırıyor. Adetlerin hakimiyeti nomos ve milliyet üzerinde düşünürken , sürgün veya yabancının kendi milletinden olmanın yeni bir yolunu bulması gerekliliğini anlatıyor. 1800 sonları Paris’e gelen sürgünler üzerinden , her iki durumu da inceliyor. Belki yazdıkları arasında en doğrusu, yabancının kendi kültürü ile daha akıllıca bir ilişki kurma fırsatı olduğu. Sadece sürgün değil, global yaşamda yerinden olma kavramını yaşayan herkes için okunması faydalı bir kitap.

Sennett has always been essayistic in style in his sociological studies, but not an essayist in the sense that I've always thought (e.g. Lopate's landmark personal essay collection). The first of these two essays is quite straightforward historical narrative and only the second comes close to the more classic sense of a contemplative essay. I'm happy that I was introduced to Notting Hill Editions through this.

Interesantísimos ensayos sobre lo que significa la otredad. Recoge dos ensayos independientes, el primero de los cuales me pareció menos logrado quizá porque utiliza terminología más académica de sociología.

El segundo, acerca de lo que implica inmigrar a otro país, me ha gustado mucho más. Por un lado, porque utiliza obras de arte de forma magistral para ilustrar sus argumentos. Por otro, porque el tema de la inmigración está de actualidad en 2024 y creo que las reflexiones de Sennett son acertadas y apropiadas para este momento.

Breve, pero representativo del trabajo de Richard Sennett, y además interesantísimo por sí mismo.

Contiene dos ensayos muy breves: uno sobre el ghetto de judíos de Venecia en el siglo XVI; otro sobre la condición del extranjero en el siglo XIX. Ambos están muy bien escritos y son amenos. Algunas reflexiones son brillantes. Personalmente, me gustó más el segundo ensayo que el primero porque creo que se pueden extraer más enseñanzas con la situación actual de los inmigrantes. No trata, sin embargo, las grandes migraciones ni la inmigración económica sino más bien la condición del Otro debido a su religión o la del extranjero por razones políticas, aunque todo es extrapolable... ¿o no?

Bir yabancı olmanın ne demek olduguna dair iki deneme var kitapta. Biri Venedik’te Yahudileri merkeze alıyor, diğeri Alexender Herzen’in hayatı etrafında gelişiyor. İkinci deneme Ten ve Taş kitabındaki denemenin genişletilmiş bir versiyonu. Sennett bunları yaparken Monet’nin, Duchamp’ın, Shakespeare’in eserlerini, Yunan tragedyalarını uğrak yerleri olarak belirliyor. Sennett entelektüel bilgiyi sıradan olana yaymadaki başarısıyla bu kitapta da belki de hiç ilgilenmediğiniz bir konuyu merak alanınıza çekiyor. Tuncay Birkan da güzel bir dil lezzeti katmış.

The Jewish Ghetto in Venice (4.5)

This was an amazing essay. It was straightforward and captivated me till the end. It had a section where it talked about Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and its relation to the Jewish Ghetto in Venice.

The Foreigner (2.5)
This was a disappointment. The only part I enjoyed was the intro. Had high expectations that weren't met, which is important because this is the main essay of the book.

Ahora tendré que ir a Venecia al barrio judío con otros ojos. Igual cambiaron los judíos por los turistas como medio de mantener la economía de la ciudad.

Me quedo con la reflexión sobre los guetos como elemento que disgrega pero, a su vez, aporta identidad de comunidad incluso estando al otro lado del mundo. Y la comparación entre el extranjero y el artista moderno.

Buen libro. Sus diversos niveles de interpretación, desde el exilio a la idea de nación, generan una lectura envolvente a lo largo de casi todo el texto. Sin embargo, en algunos pasajes de los ensayos, el autor exagera en los énfasis y uso de metáforas, cortando el vuelo de la lectura.

Absoluut aanbevolen. Maar ja, ik wàs al een absolute fan van Sennett. Voor iedereen die niet zomaar met iedere hype meeloopt en wil nadenken over z'n eigen denken en doen is Sennett echt wel een verademing. Dit ultradunne boekje gaat héél lang mee :)
