Rate this book
Mindfulness is the opposite of autopilot mode. When you are mindful, you wake up and bring your attention back to the present. You can be mindful when you are constantly aware of your feelings, thoughts, the surrounding environment, and any sensations. Mindfulness also ensures that you pay attention to your feelings and thoughts like an impartial witness. This means that you should accept those thoughts and feelings without taking them too personally.
People across the globe accept this definition since it helps people identify the exact components of mindfulness. This definition also helps one understand that their attention can shift in 3 ways when they practice mindfulness.
You Hold Your Attention on Purpose
Mindfulness ensures that you deliberately, and consciously, hold your attention. When you are on autopilot, your attention is swept up by never-ending thoughts. When you are mindful, you know you should wake up and ignore those thoughts. This gives you the ability to place your attention where you choose.
When I say, “you hold your attention on purpose,” I mean that you are conscious of your thoughts. You learn to live more consciously and are fully aware of yourself and your surroundings when you pay attention in this way.
Your Attention is Immersed in the Present
If you allow the mind to do whatever it pleases, it will wander away from the current situation. Your mind always replays your memories, and projects those memories into the future. This means that people are often never fully present in the current moment.
