Book two out does book one easily. I have reviewed other of Jerry Ahern's books, and I'll say it again, I could never see eye to eye with the man on almost all of his views, but I have to admit, the man knew how to tell a story. He knew of what he spoke. From weapons to how to survive almost anything. He never fails to put some excitement into his books. From his most popular character, John Thomas Rourke, The Survivalist, to my personal fave, Dan Track, he always put something in there to keep you going. Wall to wall action. And remember. everywhere you looked back in the 80's, there were Russians plotting.

On to The Takers River Of Gold. Our heroes, Josh Culhane and May "Fanny" Mulrooney get into all sorts of trouble. Fanny discovers a map for a lost amazon city. She's waiting for Josh to meet her so they can take a much needed rest. He's late because on a diving exploration, Culhane is attacked by Russians. Fanny decides to go on her own. Meanwhile a private boat is hijacked at sea with a rich industrialist's wife being kidnapped for ransom. The only man to deliver that ransom is, of course, Josh. Which just so happens to be around the same place Fanny is going. Throw in an ex-special forces man who became a priest. A overweight Brazilian anti terrorist agent out to stop the ransom. Some head hunting natives, and a host of Amazon warriors, and you have another epic adventure from Mr. Ahern. I just hope book three, when I get to it is just as good.

Starts off with quite a few storylines that call converge about halfway through the novel. Although not as charming or serious as the first Takers, River of Gold is "more of the same" and just a tad more action oriented. Lots of fan service for the characters whilst maintaining real-world stakes.

Fun, old school action/adventure in the mold of Indiana Jones and the old jungle serials.

Years after a friend talked me into reading The Takers I finally was able to get a very worn, third hand copy of River of Gold. We passed it around the group of four or five guys who had been wanting to read it and the consensus was, we were all disappointed. It has been too long since I read it to remember why but this just did not live up to how amazing The Takers was.

Fun, straight up adventure. Lot of chases, great locations and Amazons. What's not to like? Nice vacation read. Don't read too much into it.

Not as good as I remember the second time through
