Maira Kalman was born in Tel Aviv and moved to New York with her family at the age of four. She has worked as a designer, author, illustrator and artist for more than thirty years without formal training. Her work is a narrative journal of her life and all its absurdities. She has written and illustrated twelve children's books including Ooh-la-la- Max in Love, What Pete Ate, and Swami on Rye. She often illustrates for The New Yorker magazine, and is well known for her collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz on the NewYorkistan cover in 2001. Recent projects include The Elements of Style (illustrated), and a monthly on-line column entitled Principles of Uncertainty for The New York Times.
Three stories from Max, a poet and dreamer, with fantastic illustrations from Maira Kalman, was donated to the used bookstore where I volunteer. What a book to read and love with kids or just self, looking and smiling, often chuckling, at Max's adventures, filled with surprises from Kalman's art in words and picture.
I'd give it more stars if I could. Such a fun and strange book. This used to be my book of choice to read to my kiddos' classrooms when they were little. The language and images are equally entrancing.
This is a 3-in-1 "Max" book from Maria Kalman: Max Makes a Million; Ooh-la-la (Max in Love); and Max in Hollywood, Baby. If you can't find this book, just get the individual titles - they are worth it! My girls and I love reading this book - it has fun art, wordplays, and quirky stories that keep us giggling and give us lots to talk about in the pictures/story. Everyone needs this book on their shelf - whether they have kids or are just kids-at-heart.
