Vamplayers is a laugh-out-loud hilarious and un-freaking-believably bad-ass companion novel to Zombies Don't Cry. Rusty Fischer is an extraordinary writer and I can't stress enough how much I love his books. Vamplayers is no exception. Eye-popping, geek-a-liciously entertaining, extremely well-written and completely and utterly engaging, it's a fantabulous YA paranormal novel, and one that you absolutely can't afford to miss. Think you've read all the vampire novels out there and nothing could possibly surprise you? Think that vamps are not cool enough for you? Think again!

The plot line centers around Lily Fielding, an exceptionally kick-ass girl, who also happens to be a Third Sister at the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts. Being a Sister - and a Third Sister at that (which is pretty low in a hierarchy if you consider the fact that her team consists of only three Sisters) - is not exactly Lily's dream "job". She'd much rather be a Savior - a member of the prestigious, highly trained warrior team, designed to take down swarms of vampires with deadly precision. Everyone wants to be a Savior. Saviors are totally badass, with their monogrammed stakes, personalized size crossbows, and matching sexy red leather outfits. They inspire fear and respect, and being a Savior means doing something that actually matters and not having to sneak around the high school, pretending to be one of the empty-headed cheerleaders. Like Sisters do. Sisters work undercover, trying to track down Vamplayers (Vamplayer = Vamp + Player, an unbearably hot and gorgeous specimen that is impossible to resist, hence very dangerous). Their job is to spot the Vamplayer and his (usually skanky) victim, then become friends with the victim before the Vamplayer can turn her, and deal with the situation before it can get out of control. Being a Sister is all about preventing infestations. Being a Savior is about stopping them once they've started. In short, tho, being a Sister is BOR-ING. At least that's how Lily feels. Until, of course, she gets assigned to track a Vamplayer at the Nightshade Conservatory for Exceptional Boys and Girls (a high school in an extremely secluded location) and the proverbial shit hits the fan. What was supposed to be yet another routine Vamplayer track-down, proves to be way more challenging and dangerous, both for the Sisters and everyone else involved. The stakes are high this time (no pun intended!), with innocent people involved, Lily has to sniff out the Vamplayer and take him down before he turns a single student. And she doesn't yet know how powerful a Vamplayer she's about to face...

Holy CRAP. Rusty, seriously, how do you do that?! There is nothing I could say that would even begin to cover how much I loved Vamplayers. It's the coolest book ever. Action-packed, thrilling, funny and out-of-this-world adventurous, it's just the perfect read, whether you're looking for a blood-pressure riser, swoon-worthy (but not cheesy) romance, some jaw-dropping ass whooping or just pure, 100% entertainment. In Vamplayers, Rusty Fischer delivers all that and more. He is a master storyteller. His writing style is one of the devourable kind, one that makes you giggle uncontrollably and re-read the same passages over and over again just for the sheer fun of it. But don't be fooled, it's not a silly little book that you can just read once and forget about it shortly after you're done. Rusty has a way of making you feel entirely comfortable and relaxed with all the witty remarks and funny jokes, and then, just as you least expect it, he drops an emotional bomb on you, leaving you dumbfounded, heart-broken, and sitting there with your lip trembling. Yes, that's what he does! He's a total Writeplayer! He did that to me in Zombies Don't Cry, and he did it again in Vamplayers. And I felt for it again. And - AGAIN - I cried like a baby at the end. And you know what? It was SO GOOD! No other writer has ever managed to make me go from laughing and cheering to sobbing and trembling, and then back to laughing again - all that while reading a 292-pg YA novel (Well, except for John Green, but with Green's book it was more like 80% crying, 20% laughing and I ended up crying myself to sleep, so it doesn't count). What can I say? I really, truly, madly, deeply LOVE Rusty Fischer.

Everything from the fantastically fleshed-out, authentic, ass kicking characters, to beautifully weaved, action-packed plot line filled with top-notch humor and clever dialogues, was simply superb. Lily was awesome. I loved reading about her. Just like Maddy in Zombies Don't Cry, she was a very likable character. She was also snarky, tough, smart and hysterical. I enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes and poking around her head, it was a super fun experience, as she was just so deliciously cynical sometimes. A NO-BS kind of gal. And I really, really LOVED that about her.

All in all, Vamplayers is an absolute treasure of a book. Rich, delightful, entirely original and fresh, it's a one-of-a-kind novel that will leave you totally satisfied and glad you picked it up. Do yourself a favor and read it ASAP.

Book Info: Genre: Horror Parody
Reading Level: YA

Disclosure: I picked up a free copy of this book on Amazon, and am happy to provide an honest review.

Synopsis: At the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, Lily Fielding is a measly trainee who dreams of one day becoming a Savior — those who visit vampire-infested high schools and put down the undead with their deadly crossbows. When Lily and her classmates Alice and Cara begin their latest assignment, it seems like just another run-of-the-mill gig: they’re to simply spot the Vamplayer — part vampire, part player — identify the popular girl he’s set his sights on, and befriend her before the Vamplayer can turn her to do his bidding. Before long, however, the Vamplayer sets his sights on Lily's friends, and she is left to face the threat alone while protecting her friends from the dark forces she has sworn to resist.

My Thoughts: I just read Fischer’s hilarous Ushers, Inc. (review here), and noticed I had a couple more of his books on my pile (so to speak) of ebooks, so decided to go ahead and get them read and reviewed as soon as I could.

What I love about Fischer is that he breathes new life into an old meme, giving us fresh, new ideas about the monsters so many of us love to read about. For example, vampires have no problem with sunlight and sacred space, although holy water and garlic are still a problem.

At any rate, this book addresses that age-old problem – what to do with scuzzy vampires that pretend to be high-school students so they can mack on the nubile, young flesh of the high-school girls around them. Seriously, it’s a problem – I’m always reading about it in books everywhere. Fischer creates this team, the Sisterhood of the Dangerous Girlfriends, who go out to where these Vamplayers are trying to set up shop and shut them down.

Of course you know this particular assignment is going to go all wrong... If you’re as sick as I am of all these silly YA paranormal romances, with all the lovey-dovey, ooey-gooey romance stinking up the place, then this is a fun book. Well, there is some romance, but it’s more the normal, hormone-type stuff, not that “I have waited my whole life just for you and now I’ll love you forever even if you are only 14 and I’m 587 years old...” *rolls eyes* Where’s that cross-bow when I need it...

Check out Vamplayers; it’s really fun and highly enjoyable.

I do not know HOW he does it- time and time again I am BLOWN AWAY by his ability to freaking ROCK MY FACE OFF with awesome. Is it apparent to everyone that I’m INDEED a SUPER FAN of Rusty Fischer? I know right?

In true Rusty Fischer style, he’s created something uber unique and wicked fun!

Vampires hunting vampires for the good of mankind… the the PLAN anyway.

Lily, Alice and Cara are ‘Sisters’… HOPING to become Saviors someday! Saviors are the END all- BE ALL of vampy badass. Vamp infestation? Who ya gonna call? The SAVIORS baby! Where as Sisters go in and try to STOP an infestation BEFORE it happens!

“Like some kind of vampire superheroes on steroids, they swoop into town wearing their red leather jumpsuits and sleek motorcycle boots, wielding their monogrammed stakes and personal-sized crossbows, cutting down vampires left and right.” (The Saviors)

Lily, Alice and Cara are sent on a new assignment in Raven’s Roost where they believe a Vamplayer is stalking the students of the very exclusive Nightshade high.

“It’s a lot of pressure being one of the only three girls responsible for nearly two thousand mortals and stopping a Vampire Armageddon,” ~Lily

One of my favorite things about Rusty Fischer’s books are all his little extras!! I realize a lot of authors strive to set their mythological creatures apart from the ‘pack’ so to speak, but no one quite accomplishes it like Rusty Fischer!!

“It’s a little known fact that vampires are absolute sugar fiends. Like, crack addict-style sugar fiends.”

This makes me SUPER happy… Not even joking a little bit. There’s an ongoing joke that I could never be a vamp because of my candy addiction! Can we just say: Skittle Vampiress FTW!

Okay, moving on…

I totally loved our sarcastic and super fabulous heroine Lily, but I had a major soft spot for her ‘promiscuous’ BFF, Alice!! (I know right?)

“See if they have any photo galleries of the sports team,” she [Alice] says. “I need to know if I should pack slutty or, you know, extra slutty.”

“I know where you’ll fit best,” she [Cara] says to Alice … “Right in some jock’s arms.”
“Or two,” I [Lily] say, “if he has a friend.”

If you hadn’t noticed, my reviews for Rusty Fischer books tend to run a bit heavy on the quotes… oh believe me, I could’ve added MORE!! I literally fight the urge to quote about every other paragraph for some sort of AWESOME!

I realize this review is getting a tad lengthy… but I must sat a few more things: Grover and Zander … EPIC FREAKING WIN! Two Star-Wars geek guys that totally stole my heart! Not an easy feat either, considering when anything remotely resembling ‘Deep Space Nine’ (is this a correct reference even? Lol) usually has me running the other way!

Tristan. Yeah… you’re totally just going to LOVE (to hate) him!!

Vamplayers has everything I’ve come to expect from reading one of Rusty Fischer’s books; snarky humor, witty characters, fast-paced plot and above all- complete and utter AWESOME!!!

Vamplayers has secured it place indefinitely on my favorites shelf, right next to Zombies Don’t Cry!

*Just a quick note… Goodreads says Vamplayers is ‘Book Two in A Living Dead Love Story’ I do not believe this is correct. Zombies Don’t Cry (also one of MY SUPER FAVS EVER was ‘Book ONE in A Living Dead Love Story’ and IF I’m recalling correctly- which I totally might not be, Rusty had said the something about there being a Living Dead Love Story sequel… but he didn’t mention Vamplayers being it!*

Loved the start and end, disappointed with the middle. It was obvious who the vamplayer was and what what going on. The MC wasn't stupid so why did the author drag it on for so long.

*I won this book from a goodreads giveaway held by the author. Thanks, Rusty Fischer, for sending me this book!*

I pretty much love everything about this book. The cover, the writing style, the many different characters--it's all awesome! Overall the plot is exciting, consistent and easy to follow. Plus there was just enough romance to keep me happy. When I first read the description of the book I knew it would be something I'd enjoy because I like all things vampire, and it was clear that this would be a vampire story unlike any I've ever read. The author provides the reader with a fresh take on vampires but still leaves them with several familiar traits that I've come to know and love over the years. Also, Rusty Fischer is just plain hilarious, I can't even keep track of how many times I laughed throughout this book!

I instantly liked Lily, the main character. She's a part of a special three person team of vampires whose sole purpose is to track down and stop Vamplayers--which are vampire studs who wreak havoc on high schools by turning young impressionable girls, who then create an infestation of hungry vampires that gets out of hand. Lily and her team are called The Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends, and they get dispatched to several different high schools a year to go undercover as students and prevent infestations.

Lily is ranked Third Sister and she is an incredibly funny and kick-butt chick, and she has her own unique and clumsy sort of charm. Her back story was really sad but also pretty interesting. Her two Sisters, Alice and Cara, are so different from her but yet they complimented eachother well--like puzzle pieces that fit together. They always provided me with plenty of chuckles. Also, I just LOVE Zander and Grover! They are two geeky guys that cracked me up and befriended Lily at school when no one else would. Zander is seriously ADORKABLE (adorable, but a dork)! He and Lily made me smile when they were together. So cute!

Lily's suspicions as to who the Vamplayer was led her on quite a journey and kept me very entertained. She was definitely under a lot of pressure and responsibility to figure this out. The suspected Vamplayer, Tristan, is one of those characters where you both like and dislike him, and that much is clear from Lily's interactions with him. Speaking of dislike, Bianca was so wretched! She fit into the story really well with her mean, popular girl tendencies. It was fun trying to guess who the real Vamplayer was and the ending was so good!

Rusty Fischer has a delightful writing style and I will be sure to check out his other books because if they are anything like this one, I know I'll enjoy them. And I don't usually do this but here are some funny quotes in the book that I just had to make note of and share because they had me laughing out loud:

Lily- "It was an accident, you guys. I was supposed to quick pop in, pop out, but Zander's hose went off and Grover lost it and I got all wet and---"
Alice- "Hold up, hold up. Are we still in the kitchen by this point, or are you describing what happened in the geeks' room?"

Grover- "What? You said nothing happened last night." Grover pushes him away, totally missing the point. "You lied to me, bro?"
Zander- "Uh, Grover. I think Lily being a vampire trumps your hurt feelings, 'kay?"
Grover- "I think you underestimate the pain of my hurt feelings, brother!"

Lily- "Don't play dumb." I hiss, snapping back my head so that the fangs pop out. "We both know why I'm here."
Tristan- "Are those real"?
Grover- "Trust me, dude, they're all her and they're all real."

Lily dies just to realize she has been turned and now is working for the Sisterhood of Dangerous Girlfriends. After several years of training she is now a Third Sister alongside with Cara (Second Sister) and Alice (First Sister).
And what they do is get into a potential place where a vamplayer is planning to create an army of vampires using first one victim: the typical hot-slutty girl that will fall for his charm and then, once turned, lure everyone else into becoming vamps too.
Once they are inside such place (almost always high schools or places like that) they find the potential victim, save her form the vamplayer and kill him.

Easy peasy, right? Wrong. Lily is tired of being Third Sister, of going to high school after high school just to save ungrateful girls and, at some rate, she is also tired of Alice for being so slutty and superior. But on top of everything she wants to be a Savior.
Who are Saviors? They are something like the Elite, la crème de la crème of vampires. They are the badass who save the world when a vamplayer has gone already too far.

But for now she is stucked at being a Sister and their new assignment is to enrole into Nightshade Conservatory for Exceptional Girls and Boys. Yes, posh name means posh place.

Now what they need to do is go, blend in, spot the victim and potential vamplayer and save the world.

Sadly for Lily everything goes wrong when Alice starts to hung out with the cool guys and becomes -more- distant, cold and superior. And then Cara, sweet Cara, turns her back on her too. But at least she meets Zander, a geeky guy, and Groover, a guy a little bit too big but with a heart even bigger. They two make sure she is not alone and she even suspects Zander's feelings for her are specials.

Now she only needs to unmask Tristan as the vamplayer and save the horrible Bianca, who is the one making her life a living nightmare... But something seems a little off about her plan.

Personal opinion:
Once again I have to bow down to Rusty's ideas and his unique style of writing. I had a wonderful time reading this book and, like "Zombies don't Cry", I sure hope he will write a sequel for Vamplayers.

I mean, how cool is the idea of a vampire being also a player? I know nowadays that's what they do, seduce, but the word itself encircles a whole new concept.

Maybe the only thing that felt a little too forced was the bond between Lily, Cara and Alice... specially with Alice. I mean, if you work with someone that it's supposed to be like a real sister then, I'm sorry, but Alice isn't sister material at all. True to be honest I don't have brothers or sisters so I'm not sure how they interact with each other but I would have gladly punch Alice in the face a few times.
Now that I think of it, I assume that's the whole point, hahaha.

I finished the book yesterday night and all I could think of was: "Not only he managed to scare me a little and made me check the windows (just in case something was lurking outside, you know) but he also made me laugh with the witty dialogues and snarky answers while crying with some of the outcomes". I love a book that makes me feel so many things because it means the author managed to create a bond between the characters and myself.

And, just in case you wonder, Rusty manages to write from a female point of view in a superb way. More than once I found myself forgetting that the author is a guy!

Now the only thing I have to say is: Dear Rusty, tell me there's going to be a series, please! I want to read more about Lily, Zander and Tristan!

the last few pages of this book lost a star from me. i was on the fence, but then the dreaded love triangle reared its ugly head and that was it. i was done. i dont understand the need for a love triangle in almost every freaking book. why cant two people just be together? why is that so hard. why do authors feel that including a third person is somehow going to enhance their book? tip - it does not.

SPOILERS
there were a whole bunch of things that i hated about this book. lets start with the confrontations. they were awful. so awful. including the big fight scene with bianca. they were so poorly written it made me want to cry. and why in the hell didnt she help zander first? hes about to drown and once it goes above his head she wont be able to grab him cause of the holy water but she insists on sitting by grover, shaking him awake. are you freaking stupid? THINK. and than she just casually wades into the water - like are you kidding me? do your freaky hover thing and yank him out. jeez.

and this lily chick was all over the place. like she says she doesnt feel bad or regret what was happening to alice and cara [when they were melting - which by the way makes me think they are witches not vamps.. wizard of oz anyone?] because of how they acted the past week but then she was all they didnt deserve it they didnt know what they were doing.. blah blah.

and than shes all 'me and tristen have history but im with zander so it doesnt matter.' what the hell are you on. you hung out ONCE. zander is to fricken good for you.

i loved zander. adored him. i love that hes into sci-fi and isnt described as abnormally beautiful. ive had enough of the perfect guys - they are overplayed and im over it.

and then that person that is in charge of the academy (i dont remember her name) - her punishment for killing a royal was 'making the program the best it can be'. EXACT WORDS. thats punishment? are you kidding me? i feel like thats how this whole book went, im expecting something huge - like the ancients were even like are you prepared to hear your punishment, they made her kneel before them, and she was all nervous about it and then theyre like make the program the best it can be..
.. i was expecting her to be killed or some shit like that.

im pretty sure there were a couple other examples of how the characters would say one thing and than a few pages or chapters later would contradict themselves, but i think ive made my point. this book was okay, but very disappointing at the same time. the whole vamplayer thing was kinda iffy for me - like a vampire who is basically only there for the sole purpose of seducing people.. eh. i liked the sister and savior concept though. that was original, but i think the author could have came up with a better use for them. ya know, other than to stop boys from getting it on with girls. also i wish we could have seen more of the saviors. they were in the book for like 3 seconds. but they were badass.

ALSO i just have to say that i knew tristen wasnt a vampire. and bianca was. the whole time shes like well he must of turned her and look out for him, blah blah. im like no bitch open your freaking eyes. stop making excuses.

I think im gonna have to steer clear of vampire books for a while cause the last 3 that ive read have been seriously lacking.. bummer.

*Beware of possible spoilers*
After getting turned to a vampire as a teenager, Lily has trained to be a Sister, a Vamplayer hunter, at the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts. She and her two other Sisters are sent undercover to high schools, where they must stop Vamplayers (smooth talking bad boys who happen to also be vampires) who would turn unsuspecting teenage girls into killing machines. In this latest assignment, Lily quickly finds herself investigating alone, without the help of her two Sisters who abandon her for the irresistible popular girl. As the Third Sister, Lily feels unprepared for the evil she must face as well as protecting the innocent humans of the school. And all this while trying to survive the worst of enemy of all: high school itself.

The author, Rusty Fischer, has created a universe where there are different kinds of vampires: those who kill and cause mayhem by spreading their kind, and those who help innocent humans and protect them from the bad vampires. But not all vampires are smooth, sophisticated and intellectually superior, as exemplified with the lead character in the story, Lily Fielding. She was a normal teenage girl who was bitten and then became third string in a fighting trio. Despite her vampire powers, she still retains a lot of the awkwardness and naiveté of youth and adolescence. This makes her a much more relatable character than the other vampire characters in the story who are aloof for much of the story. The reader can connect to her as a narrator because Lily is in the trenches, falling for human boys and vampire boys alike, feeling acutely the loss and rejection of her friends. She is imperfect, but realistically so, with an endearing hint of Eighties nostalgia.
While the majority of the book is entertaining—tinted with Lily’s sarcastic humor and pop references—the ending leaves something to be desired. This is disappointing since the climax and final showdown is satisfyingly difficult and heartbreaking for Lily. Lily is put through the ringer and she comes out a better and more compassionate character. But this is tempered with odd plot choices from Fischer, especially concerning certain characters. What is meant as redemption and change comes across as a reneging of almost all of the events of the book. Rather than promoting growth, the ending is frustrating because it returns some characters to the status quo, and there seems to be no repentance and no accountability for some of the offences these characters committed during the story. Adding to this frustration is the author’s choice to introduce a (odious and trite) love triangle, one made all the more jarring considering the characters that are forcibly and awkwardly pigeonholed in this unnecessary plot twist.

This is an enjoyable read and an interesting addition to the vampire YA fiction genre. Though it suffers from some awkward plot choices at the end, this story comes together nicely and could become a series to follow (disclaimer: a series has not been officially announced, but it definitely feels like there could be a sequel).

I was sent a copy of Vamplayers by Medallion Press to review. I’m not sure how I got on their list, maybe from previously reviewing one of Rusty’s books, but I’m glad I did.

Can I first say how much I love the cover? It doesn’t feature a hot, sexy model, but I think it’s gorgeous!

At first I was I little confused about why a fellow vampire would want to take out another. A Vamplayer is not like a regular vampire. They charm and target someone to do their bidding, become stronger, and turn and entire school and even community into vampires. Not exactly a good thing if vampires are still trying to blend in with normal society.

Lily is a Sister at the Afterlife Academy of Exceptionally Dark Arts, the third Sister to be exact, who wants to be a Savior. She just can’t seem to pass the final test in the Simulation House. She travels to schools with Alice and Cara, First and Second Sisters respectively, infiltrate different groups while trying to blend in and figure out who the Vamplayer is. Once the Vamplayer is targeted, the Sisters call the Savoiors who take the Vamplayer out.

Simple enough, right?

Lily spots Tristian and Bianca on the first day and immediately thinks that she has found their target. What should be a run of the mill assignment turns tricky when Alice and Cara take on their roles a little too seriously. Also complicating matters is Zander, a a geeky human Star Wars loving boy who Lily takes a shine to.

Lily must save the school by herself, but is the Third Sister up to it?

While Lily is pretty awesome, determined to finish her mission and save everyone, but I was yelling at her to get a clue. It’s hard to know when to reveal certain details and how fast to progress a story sometimes. I really do love how Fischer writes his female leads. Here’s a few of my highlights:

If only I’d held on to one of those stakes from my Simulation, I’d impale myself right now.

“See if they have any photo galleries of the sports team,” she says. “I need to know if I should pack slutty or, you know, extra slutty.”

I look down at my damp chest to make sure I’m not having some kind of wardrobe malfunction or something.

“We’re supposed to be doing recon,” Alice says in her First Sister voice, “not stuffing our sweet teeth with the Official Star Wars Light Saber Duel Reenactment Club.”

She’s been on dates to ice cream parlors, rock concerts, museums, state fairs, foreign films, drive-throughs. One guy even took her cow tipping. I kid you not. She always returns (the next morning, of course) raving about how wonderful and intoxicating and refreshing it was.

Vamplayers is a fun, quirky adventure with a little romance thrown in to mix things up. It’s aimed at Young Adults, but I think it’s also suitable for adults who want a fun, quick read without a bunch of sex. I have read two of Fischer’s books so far and enjoyed them both. I will continue check out his Vampire and Zombie books in the future. In fact, I need to fit Panty Raid at Zombie High into my reading rotation!

I am seriously trying to figure out a non-spoilery way to express my love of Vamplayers. This is a YA vampire novel and Rusty Fischer did not follow the *haven’t I read this book before, formula*. There wasn’t over the top instalove, and only one guy is super model hot…the other boys look like real people *gasp*.

Lily is the Third Sister. It is her job to go into a high school along with her higher ranking Sisters Alice and Cara to find the Vamplayer at that school before he has the chance to make a new vampire. Lily is awesome! Lily is used to being the laid back Sister on assignments, but this time she will have to take the lead. She is brave, loyal, and fiercely protective. I found this out first hand in a super mean-hearted dodge ball match in gym. Yes, you read that right. dodge ball match! You know you want to read this now!!!

“Balls are whizzing so fast, our sneakers squeaking so loudly on the gym floor, it’s like a cacophony of jungle noises in the middle of the gym.
At one point Tristan trips, their side gasp, and Cara uses the opportunity to launch an aerial assault straight at his face. (Hey, all’s fair in love and dodge ball, pretty boy.)”

My character love does not extend to just Lily. I have a very special place in my heart Grover and Zander. I would have totally been friends with these two Star Wars loving geeks back in high school. They handled everything that’s happening at their school way better than I would have at their age. If I found out there were vampires at my school when I was a teenager, I think I would have ran away. But Grover and Zander put all those B-Movies they watched over the years to use, after they freak out a little, and manned up.

I know I said at the beginning that Vamplayers did not follow the normal YA formula and I am sticking by that statement. But, I will say that Lily does sort of have two love interest. one being Zander, who I love. Swoon, any regular boy that will stay around to fight evil without any super powers of his own pushes him way up the scale in my book. Then there is Tristan. I have a love-hate relationship with Tristan, meaning I love to hate him. And at the end of the book when I found out how he made his money…well lets just say he didn’t gain any points. So for me this was not a love triangle because I was only rooting for one guy.

If you can’t tell from all of the above I think that Rusty Fischer created a sweet slice of epic in Vamplayers. I want to say more about the Sisters but every time I try I get even more spoilery. Vamplayers has humor, action, and a villain you can hate enough to want dead. You just need to go get this and be ready to have fun with it!

Happy Reading,
Rebecca

Last year I read Zombies Don't Cry by Rusty Fischer and I really enjoyed it! His writing is kind of different because he creates kind of a spoof, it's half ridiculous {in a funny way} and half serious. Like I giggle at some of the things he comes up with, but yet I grow attached to the characters and I take the story serious, just not too serious. I'm not really a big fan of spoofs, whether it's a movie or a book, it's normally not my thing. But Rusty makes it work for me. I actually invest myself in the story.

I found myself sucked into this book quickly and cruised through it in a short period of time. I never grew bored and it was pretty much steady action going on keeping me turning those pages. I really enjoyed Lily and her view point on things as well as her ability to kind of let things roll off her shoulders. She's been going into schools to look for these vamplayers for a very long time and when you've been a student for that long you really learn a lot.

Now these vamplayers kind of sound silly right? Well, it's not really that silly. They are young and good looking vampires that stake out girls at high schools and turn them into vampires. Eventually turning the entire school, or much of it. There is a bit more to the whole vampire background revealed in the book and I thought it all made sense and worked well. I think I might have liked a bit more history sooner, but it wasn't a big deal.

I liked that Lily liked the 'underdog', the nerdy, geeky dude. But I didn't really 'feel' the romance at first. As the story went on it wasn't really an issue though and it all worked out fine. I remember thinking in the beginning that I'd like a bit more character development but by the end I no longer felt that way. So I guess they were gradually fleshed out more as I read on.

Now I really enjoyed this book but it wasn't perfect. One issue was that Lily was kind of blind to things. She'd get all these hints about things but she just pretty much ignored them because she was so sure she knew exactly who was guilty and didn't let herself really think otherwise.

Overall this book is a lot of fun with action, romance and friendship. There's some gore and violence so be aware of that. I definitely recommend you pick this one up!

I got Vamplayers for free, off the kindle website. I had low expectations of this book because it was a free book, and was thoroughly surprised to find that my expectations were beyond exceeded. I am not saying the series doesn’t have its flaws; such as a very simplistic writing style, a couple of shallow characters, and one extremely obvious, to me, plot twist, are my only gripes though. The story is written in the first person POV, and since it is a YA-Fantasy title, I didn’t expect to be challenged by the writing, but I think it should be aimed towards younger demographics.

The main character could have used a little more back story, and development, but other than that she is a heroine that doesn’t need to be saved by a male counterpart. She knows when, and how, to throw down when it comes time to do so.

There is a romance in this book, but it doesn’t dominate it like it does in most YA books these days. I liked that, and found it a refreshing change of pace from what I have been reading as of late. I am sure that many fans of the YA, and fantasy genres will find this book entertaining, as well as people just getting started in these types of books.

The organization of the vampire world in this book was also pretty fascinating. You have your different types of vampires: the vamplayers; exactly what it sounds like, vampire/player mixed into 1, and their female counterparts being vampresses, scavengers; wanderers, living off beasts and human both, sisters; the girls that find the vamplayers and try to stop them from starting infestations, saviors; the kick ass assassins that come in with swift precision to stop infestations once they have begun, ancients; who have been around since the beginning of time, and royals; pretty much the descendants of the ancients, only bred and born, not turned into the vampire life.

I would suggest this book to young audiences, fantasy, people who enjoy stories about vampires, and female heroines. This book is short, and could have used a little more depth, but for the audience it was intended, I think it hit the nail right on the head.

I almost never read vampire books. But I've had several experiences with Rusty Fischer's work & I knew, without even reading the synopsis that I would love this book. I did. I loved it so much I read it in one sitting & refused to put it down even to eat or do other things one must do during the day. Full of his unique brand of snark & pop culture, forefronted by a fabulous female protagonist from his seemingly endless cadre of smart, sassy, & kick-ass heroines, Vamplayers is at times pure satire & at other times intense, no-nonsense horror flick type fare.

But Fischer does not stop at a fantastic gal to lead the way. No, he populates the halls & rooms of his everyday settings with characters who are off-beat in all the right ways. From the too cool to be in high school guy with his affected European accent to the seriously endearing Star Wars geek who I truly envisioned Jonah Hill playing as I was reading. Even the lesser characters who only appeared for a few moments were 3-dimensional & quirky in some way. I loved each of them whether they were good or evil, strong or cowardly. I especially loved that the fat guy was willing to climb a wall, 4 stories straight up to save his own behind. Too cool.

The pace of the story is fast. I devoured it, all the while wondering if Fischer didn't write it all out in one fast clip from beginning to end. It must take a lot of attention to detail & plotting to make it look that effortless & I applaud him for the ease with which I became completely seduced into the world of the story which had some great twists & turns. One turn toward the very end actually had me cheer out loud momentarily.

This book is well worth the read for anyone who enjoys vampires, especially a la Whedon-esque snarky banter. Or, you know, anyone who has already read Rusty Fischers other amazingly addictive novels. Although I do caution that it's not for the faint of heart. Probably more for older teens & those who don't squeal at some gory imagery -- I mean, it IS a vampire novel & none of the vamps even REMOTELY sparkle.

I am a huge fan of Rusty Fischer! I think that I might be his biggest fan. Seriously, I cannot read enough of his books!

Vamplayers is a fun, interesting, new take on the vampire trend that is rocking the YA lit department. I love this idea, that there are players whose only goal is to seduce, turn, and wreak havoc on a high school and community.

So, we’ve got the Sisters: Alice, Cara, & Lily. They’re, you know, not teenagers, but expertly-trained vampire secret ops agents whose purpose is to seek out the vamplayer. They have a rank, Lily (our heroine) is Third Sister. She really has no pull, no authority. She’s the nobody of the group. Her history is epic. Sad, but epic. And I loved Lily for the most part. She’s a little of a ditz. Ok, so maybe a lot of a ditz. She doesn’t connect the dots. Even I connected the dots. So, I got a little frustrated with her. I wanted to slap her a few times, but she is mostly made of awesome.

I loved Zander and Grover. By far the best supporting cast and comedic relief I’ve seen in awhile! They are geeks, outcasts, and scholarship kids at this exclusive school. They’re pretty much nobodies, too. And they are made of awesome.

I love the ending! I didn’t see that coming! I expected something quite the opposite and love this book all the more for it! And I’m not going to spoil it for you!

Vamplayers is action packed, full of awesome, and a very very fun read! So, on February 1, BUY THIS BOOK!

4 Trees: READ THIS BOOK!

Get to reading,
Richard

This one is a definite read! Rusty writes in such a smooth and easy flow, letting you fall right in and attach to the characters. I fell in love with the kind and good natured yet, kick some serious ahem, character of Lily and the page gripping events she'll lead you through.

Ever since that gruesome day that Lily's mother was attacked and killed, Lily now lives to find Vamplayers. Vamplayers are vamps that play the game so good that they can fool any human they wish and look fabulous while doing it. Far off the royal breeding line, they have no respect for the natural order of things, they go after any and all humans they wish, and scope out high schools, taking them over. Lily's job (being a Sister, and the third and bottom Sister at that) is to find out just who they are in the high school and call in the Saviors to kill them. Lily wants nothing more than to be First Sister, and even more, she wants to be a Savior, but she never can pass that test.

When Lily, Alice, and Cara arrive at the new school, Lily thinks she has it all figured out. She knows the Vamplayer this time, yet she doesn't understand why Alice and Cara are acting funny towards her as if she is the outcast. They are Sisters after all. Why the strange attitude, strange looks, and disappearances? What are they up to and why aren't they focused on the Vamplayer? Something just isn't right. Nothing like this has ever happened before.

What an amazing book! Rusty has written a winner in Vamplayers that has some fantastic elements that we all look for in a good Vamp book: Romance, creepy vamps, a secret agency, thrills, humor and so much more.

This is kind of a mini-review: I'm a bit behind in reviews and had no intention of reading Vamplayers but once I started I couldn't put it down. I started yesterday evening and finished this morning. Each character carries a unique descriptive voice, I instantly bonded with Lily, the MC and there were some actual moment of true creepiness that had me looking towards my huge fishbowl of windows in my dining, living, family rooms and kitchen looking out into an extremely wooded area. See what I mean about being in a fishbowl in the woods? I could almost picture eerie scratches and scrapes on said windows, needless to say, it didn't take me long to haul my butt into the bedroom where the windows aren't quite so large, LOL! It isn't all creeptastic, though. There are moments of levity that had me chuckling, too. Rusty is an ace with narrative and the plot was seamless with surprises that I didn't see coming. Now that's what I love in a good book!

This is a series that I will be on the watch for and one that I will recommend to every friend I have :o]

Bravo, Rusty!

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from Medallion Press in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I started this one pretty late. In fact, it was after 2am, and I was only planning on reading for an hour or so, until I got tired. I ended up reading the whole thing right then and there. I could not put this book down.

Read my full review at The Wolf's Den

Overall, Vamplayers was a book I just couldn't put down. If you're looking for some vampire with your teen drama, but don't want a gushy romance, this is definitely a viable option. Not huge on romance, gore, or language, I'd say it's appropriate for Middle Grade and up, but it's probably better suited theme-wise for high school YA and up. With a fast-paced story, kickass characters, and vampire lore that is sure to leave you craving for more, you'd best hunt down Rusty Fischer's latest paranormal thriller, Vamplayers, before it decides to hunt you!

You can also read this review here.

Lily Fielding is a vampire who dreams of becoming a Savior one day. Saviors are those kick-ass people who battle the Vamplayers. But for now, Lily is stuck as one of the Sisters, the third one in fact. Alice and Cara, her fellow sisters, and her are assigned to a school to investigate. But Alice and Cara are targeted and that leaves Lily to face the threat alone.

I thought this was a great vampire book with all the tension and stuff. Lily is always on the edge about the Vamplayer and that make the mission all the more believable. Something happened then Alice and Cara couldn't help her anymore.

I thought Lily and her boy friends were pretty kick-ass in this story. Oh, c'mon. They took on a Royal Vamplayer themselves (until help came, of course)! That was pretty wicked awesome, man. I was like, "Yes, beat that kid." *just realized I sound too violent* Oh well.. you know what I mean :)

This was a pretty original vampire story-- considering the Vamplayers and what not. Give this a try :) You won't be disappointed.

Wow. Not your everyday average vampire love story. So much better. Lily is sort of thrust into being a vampire. But she's good at it, and what she does. She hunts Vamplayers, who would turn innocents into vampires. Her and her "sisters" work together to do this. But when they are assigned to Nightshade, things do NOT go as planned. Of course, Lily is certain she has it figured out the first day, who it is, who he is looking to turn, etc. Only, its not who she expected at all. And this person isn't your ordinary vampire, they are a Royal! I read this book in less than 4 hours, and that is only because my son kept making me stop to do something! I was taken by surprise!! Its unique, the characters are likable, and I love the book written from Lily's perspective, as if she really was the teenager in which form her body is trapped. 5 of 5 stars!!

I was offered a review copy of this book and, since I enjoyed two of Rusty's other books, I jumped at the chance. I am glad to say that I was not disappointed.

This is a tale that kept me grinning and hooked on each page turn from start to finish. It has the same zany humour I've come to expect from this author and it is nicely paced. The twists are a little predictable at times, but this just adds to the fun as it is also a great spoof piece in many ways.

This book will definitely appeal to fans of horror-comedy and it boasts a cast of crazy and fun characters that will make you eager to turn each page and find out what will happen next. A great new story from Rusty Fischer whether you are new to his writing or already a fan.

Ok I LOVE Rusty' books. The writing is wicked good, and the story line in Vamplayer is a unique take on the Vamp world. I was instantly pulled in by Lily, she is an amazing girl then Vampire! All the aspects of the world are fully realized and very interesting.

Vamplayers? Sounds good right? NOPE they are players looking for a hottie girl to turn then let loose and start a newbie vamp infestation! BAD! Lily and her sisters get in over their head. I loved the characters. No really all of them are so well written that you can get into each of them. The story is just Wicked Awesome! twists, turns, ACTION and some romance it's all jam packed. You so need to read this!

Vamplayers is a fun and engaging book with a humorous, yet at times serious, look at the life of Lily, a Sister who wants to be a Savior. The Sisters get a routine job at another school (being a perpetual high school student sucks!) to find the Vamplayer and keep him away from his targeted popular girl. However, this is one assignment that is nothing like it appears to be. All the sudden Lily's friends are acting strange and she's got no one to turn to except for the 'scholarship' kids who are not-so-closeted sci-fi nerds. With action, drama, some romance, and laughs, Vamplayers is a lighthearted addition to your vampire bookshelf!

Fischer doesn't waste much time on setting, descriptions or characterizations but his plots hum along at a nice place and his ideas are fresh and original.

Lily, a vampire action princess along with her two friends, is tasked with rooting out Vamplayers -- vampires who set off infestations at boarding schools. Her latest assignment runs into some problems since the Vampire turns out to be a Vampiress and its her friends Alice and Cara who wind up getting turned.

Not great literature but then, it's not trying to be. A fun easy read.

I have to admit, when I first opened this book, my expectations were not that high. But, I found myself caught up in the story of Lily and her Sisters, and the events that they went through throughout this book. I really liked the author's approach to different types of vampires and vampire heirarchy. It was something different than the standard, and I liked it. The book is definitely more geared towards a young adult audience, but I would strongly recommend this to anyone who wants a fresh new take on a vampire tale, with a little fun thrown in too!

It took me a while to get into this one. I didn't really like the main character until the end because she basically was clueless about everything around her. I liked the concept of the story, it was different than other vampires stories nowadays, and didn't have much romance in it for once. But I kind of had a clue what was going on before she even figured it out and it pissed me off that she was that clueless....but overall it was a good read, especially for 99 cents.

Well, this was no amazing literary feat. That's for sure. I think this book suffered just solely based on its title. I went into it expecting 'cheesy' and it was hard to take anything seriously. It held my attention well enough and I absolutely loved the star wars/ star trek references:) overall it was an ok book. I didn't hate it, but I certainly won't be dialing any friends to recommend it either.

I can't even remember how I found this book. I think Amazon knows to recommend ridiculous YA vampire novels to me at this point. I thought the premise was interesting--a group of vampire girls go into high schools undercover to find and kill the vamplayer (vampire/player) who will inevitably seduce the student body. The ending was a little predictable and I wasn't sure of all the mythology, but I liked that it was different.

The concept is a bit more interesting than the execution, but the book was still good enough for me to finish it in two days. More editing could have helped it: the book raised questions such as "how can vampires be out in the sunlight," and yet never answered it.

Still was an interesting take on vampires/vampire lore.
