Lesley dreamed of being a writer, but studied law as her mother insisted she had "something to fall back on". Since joining Usborne Publishing, she has written and edited hundreds of books, from funny rhyming stories to an award-winning history book. Nowadays, she is often found recording books, too, in Usborne's very own recording studio.
For readers who aren't at the level of chapter books, this is a great series of books. In this book, Alfie is a small time thief who isn't very good at his job, but after arriving home and discovering someone or something has been stealing his own stuff, he soon realizes that it isn't very fun or nice to be the victim of robbery. Each page is fully illustrated with graphic novelties that will keep the reader entertained. As a bonus, each page has a question for the reader so they can look at the illustration and try to find the answer. A great series for beginner readers!
The Burglar’s Breakfast by Felicity Everett is a delightful and humorous picture book that flips the typical burglar story on its head. Instead of a sneaky villain, readers meet a curious and rather clumsy burglar who is more interested in breakfast than burglary!
The story follows a burglar who breaks into a house in the middle of the night—but instead of causing trouble, he finds himself distracted by the kitchen and a tasty breakfast. What follows is a funny and unexpected series of events that keeps young readers entertained and laughing.
Felicity Everett’s writing is simple, witty, and perfect for early readers. The narrative uses playful language and a clever twist that encourages kids to think about unexpected perspectives.
The illustrations are bright, expressive, and full of life. They perfectly capture the burglar’s surprise, mischief, and the cosy kitchen scenes, adding warmth and charm to the story.
Ideal for children aged 4–8, The Burglar’s Breakfast is a great read-aloud for families and classrooms. It offers humour and lighthearted fun while gently introducing ideas about curiosity and unexpected kindness.
This is a clever book for new readers, with word clues on each page to help the main character, Alfie, discover who'd been pilfering his breakfast foods. It comes with a clear moral. The one complaint I have is that it assumes, quite unequivocally, that grapefruit must be eaten with sugar. For parents trying to raise their kids on a diet without a lot of added sugar, this may prove to be a setback.
The author is good at arranging the scene and some details. If you are curious readers, you would love his stories. Of course, this story definitely is a good choice.
My students and I love this book - the burglar's five favorite breakfast foods have disappeared. Using the clues in the illustration, the reader and the burglar track them all down. Lots of fun and a good exercise in cause/effect, problem solving, and making inferences.
