Some women find trouble wherever they go. And some men are their only protection against it.

Redheads like Maggie O'Connell are nothing but trouble. But Trace Rawlins, a former army ranger turned private investigator, takes the case anyway. After all, he knows a thing or two about women.

Trace can sense that something is wrong--Maggie isn't telling him everything. If these menacing calls and messages are real, why won't the police help her? And if they "aren't" real, what is she hiding?

As Trace digs deeper to find the source of Maggie's threats, he discovers a secret that no one was meant to uncover. And the only puzzle left to be solved is whether the danger comes from an unknown stalker...or from the woman he's trying his hardest not to fall for

Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.

Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.

Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.

"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."

"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."

I really wanted to like this one, provided by netgalley. I really, really did want to like it, but only because it took me so long to read it, unfortunately.

There were some portions of the book which really were quite good, particularly focused when the plot starts to shift into gear and progress. Those sections moved and were written with urgency and clarity. Unfortunately, there just weren't enough of these great sections to make it an enjoyable read.

I won't go into gory detail on all the things which I couldn't enjoy but I've listed just a few:-

- The heroine has to be one of the stupidest people on the planet. Now, I know there are some pretty dim people around (unfortunately, I'm related to one or two, and I honestly admit I'm not half as smart as my 5-yr old daughter), but this heroine really would be right up there as a potential Darwin Award winner. For a start, after establishing that she's being trailed by some nut-job, and having won over the hero to her case (despite lying through her back teeth to him), she decides she's going to not do as the hero advises (he's actually a security specialist BTW), because, get this, she wants to be "free". Hmm. Free versus dead, or at the least, very, very frightened. Tough choice, that one. Then, surprise surprise! when the creepy stalker leaves a scary note for her, she races back to the hero, because, now get this one, she can't call him because her phone's battery ran down. Yeah, another good move, Bird Brain! And so on, and so on. One completely pointless, irritatingly stupid thing after another...

- In fact, the whole book seems populated by some of the silliest people on the planet, from the hero (who I really, really wanted to like, but, bless him, I just couldn't) and the heroine (whose perfect green eyes I wanted to scratch out), to the cops and the heroine's irritating "best friend". All totally silly people. And then even with possible murders going on, a creepy stalker and the heroine being incredibly irritating, they can only think of playing hunt-the-sausage. Now I know this is a romance, and kinda unlikely things happen, but can't you give the poor hero a few minutes a day when he's not thinking about sex? He's got a business to run, poor man!

- The unhealthy romance between the hero and heroine. Now, I'm pretty open-minded about what classifies as a romance in a romance book, but the heroine gets off on driving the hero so nuts he looks like he's going to do some damage to someone or something? That actually sounds pretty sick to me. The heroine calls it passion, and I call it unhealthy.

- There is far too much "transactional" stuff going on, as in "he said, she said", "he came, she went". There is no emotional description, no flowing internal dialogue. There was nothing to draw you to the hero or the heroine, or make you feel you want to get emotionally engaged with them, and care about them. There are also a few stylistic issues I have, such as writing "couple" instead of "couple of", repeatedly, and the last time I checked, psychic evaluation meant something quite different than assessing a patient's mental health, but I'll let those slide since this is an ARC

So, in short, 1 star, I really didn't enjoy this one, which I always feel sad about, since the author spends the time to write it, the publisher spends the time to publish it, and I spent the time reading it.

Maggie’s pulse roared. Her breathing quickened and damp heat poured through her. Trace kept kissing her, soft moist kisses that made her toes curl inside her sneakers and need tighten like a fist in her belly. The kiss deepened, turned erotic. A soft moan escaped. He tasted like heaven. Like cinnamon and coffee and hot, sexy male.

Maggie is being stalked, but can’t turn to the local police to help. After falsely accusing a high school boyfriend of rape, when she really just couldn’t tell her father she had sex, this caused people to question her from that moment on. The police aren’t taking her claims of being stalked seriously, so she turns to Trace and hires him to find out who’s doing this.

Trace has always been attracted to redheads, who turn out to be the wrong women for him and he’s sure Maggie will be no different. He takes her case to help her find out who has been leaving her creepy notes and phone messages, but they don’t fully trust each other. This is where Maggie goes wrong for me. She goes to Trace needing his help because no one else takes her seriously, and when he asks her to tell him everything she can think of, details about her exes, her work, anything that could help him figure things out, she holds back. She doesn’t tell him all the details and when he’s already on the edge of not trusting her, finding out that she omitted facts just makes their relationship go backwards for the most of the book.

In addition to her stalker, Maggie also has an arsonist to look out for. While we don’t know the stalkers identity until near the end of the story, we learn early on who wants to burn down her photography studio and the lengths they’ll go to do it. I’m not really sure why the arsonist storyline was included. It gave a little extra diversion for the characters to figure out, but between the stalker, the arsonist, another side story involving one of Trace’s clients who was murdered – it felt like a lot of potential suspense storylines that never really went anywhere.

It was hard to want Trace and Maggie together. They had some nice scenes together, but as far as their actual relationship, it never really got off the ground. Trace couldn’t get past the idea that Maggie was lying to him about something and didn’t fully trust her through most of the story. Maggie…made some stupid choices. Trace advised her to stay at home, to keep herself safe while he tried to get a lead on her stalker. She doesn’t listen. She leaves the house, she does things and keeps things from Trace because “there’s no way” this person could be involved or “she has to work” so she takes off to the beach alone, let’s her cell phone die, and makes herself vulnerable.

One very small side story that I would have loved to have gotten more page time was between Maggie’s sister Ashley, her baby boy and Jason, the son of Trace’s murdered client. They had a really sweet story, and I found myself rushing through the main plot to get to their scenes. We do get to meet Trace's two close friends, Jake Cantrell and Johnnie Riggs, who will have their own books coming up. I like what I read of them, and I'm all for getting to know more alpha heroes!

Overall, this was just an ok edition to The Raines of Wind Canyon (or the "Against" series). The pacing was slow and coupled with a lead relationship that kept trying to start and then stop, it never really got going at all.

Against the Storm (The Raines of Wind Canyon) is the fourth book in Kat Martin’s series. However, it can be read as a stand-alone. The story centers on Maggie O’Connell, a well-known photographer in Houston, TX. Recently, she has become the target of a stalker who leaves messages on her answering machine and car windshield, promising they will be together soon.
She’s gone to the local police for help, but, because of a false accusation she made to police while in high school, they are reluctant to believe her story.

Maggie seeks out Trace Rawlins, former Army Ranger, now turned private investigator for his own company Atlas Securities. Everyone knows that Trace has a weakness for red heads, but he painfully acknowledges that his prior relationships with them only lead to heartbreak. Unfortunately, Trace knows he’s in trouble as soon as he sees Maggie: “His gaze ran over her, the smooth skin and stubborn jaw, the big green, troubled eyes, the red hair curling softly around her shoulders.” His initial reaction is to turn her away, yet he feels compelled to help her. All he asks is that Maggie be completely honest in telling him about her past and current life. Honesty is extremely important to Trace, since he now has trust issues because of his ex-wife.

However, Maggie has secrets that she doesn’t want revealed. She decides not to fully confide in Trace because of her embarrassment over certain past events. Besides, she justifies to herself, these secrets aren’t connected to the search for the stalker anyway, right? Wrong, her secrets are relevant to the investigation, and she underestimates Trace’s skills in discovering what she’s been hiding. When Trace discovers that Maggie has lied by omission, he angrily drops her as his client.

Of course, with the ongoing stalker drama, Maggie continues to turn to Trace for help. Not only is he one of the few who believes she is in danger, but Maggie cannot resist his charm and good looks: “He grinned, a flash of white in a suntanned face so handsome it made her breath catch. An amazing face, she thought, with those hard, sculpted features and intense, whiskey-brown eyes, so warm and direct they sent a little quiver into her stomach.”

Their intense attraction for each other and sexual chemistry draw them closer together, leading to a sizzling romance that had me rooting for them even with all of the angst involved. Both characters have issues with commitment, they continuously deny their growing feelings for each other, and they expect the relationship to end once the mystery is solved. Furthermore, Maggie makes poor decisions against Trace’s advice that make her vulnerable to danger and cause ongoing frustration for Trace. Can they take their relationship further than sex? This is one of several established conflicts that build suspense in the search for the elusive stalker.

The search for the culprit is not as straightforward as expected. There are unpredictable twists to the plot that create a suspenseful, engaging story right up until its conclusion. And right when you think the story has reached its resolution, more of the unexpected happens.

As a Texas transplant, I appreciated Martin’s understanding and portrayal of the idiosyncrasies of Texan culture. Yep, Trace is most definitely a Texas cowboy. In addition, the supporting characters enhance the complexity of the story, and most of them are dynamic, rather than static, as sometimes found in other novels. The book is well-written and ties together all of the side stories by the end.

I look forward to reading other books in this series.

If any GR friends have read other books in this series or by Kat Martin in general, I'd love to know of your favorites!

When she looked into those hot brown eyes, her heart skipped several beats. “You…you what?” “One more word about Roger and I’ll haul you into the back room and show you right now.” Maggie’s eyes widened. Dear God, he meant it! She could tell by the way his teeth were clenched, by the muscle that worked in his jaw. He was jealous, and more than a little aroused.

97.0% He figured he needed all the help he could get. For nearly a week, he had talked himself out of coming here,
Aww! I don't know if this is good timing or not?! Although I'm thinking this is not going to go down well! :'( :'(

Blood poured onto the carpet.
My heart just stopped!

98.0% Its a good thing I'm alone - I just awwwwed really loud, even though I probably shouldn't coz of the situation! BUT i don't care coz that was Awesome!! <3 <3

100.0% Aww! Perfect epilogue! I really love this book! My reading was really disjointed this week though :( with work and life and such (Im also addicted to bones atm so Ive been watching that alot in my free time too) but I loved Maggie and Trace! Im going to give this 5 stars because I loved it all - the main characters, their romance, the cases, the side romance and the other characters - it wasnt as good as the books I read before this but it was def 5 stars when not comparing :D (if that makes sense?) And I hate comparing books when them coz thats not a far representation imo :) I would def recommend this series if you like romantic suspense :)

After thinking about things (See the last update/my review for book 5) Ive decided to change the rating to 4 :D Mainly because Im trying to be a little more harsh with my ratings (Not much though haha :D)

I wasn't sure I was going to read this second "Raines" trilogy since the first one was only so-so for me. But there haven't been many new books out that have peaked my interest so I thought I'd give it a try. And I'm glad I did. I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

Series Note:
This is the fourth book in the "Raines of Wind Canyon" series, which is a low-key romantic suspense series about some sexy Alphas mostly in the security business helping some women in need. This book is the first book in the second trilogy of the series. You don't have to have read the others first as this trilogy is kind of spin-off of the first, taking some of the supporting characters and giving them their own stories.

Summary:
A chance meeting by photographer Maggie O'Connell and head of Atlas Security Trace Rawlins leads Maggie to ask Trace for help. She's got someone leaving her creepy notes and calling her house. The police aren't all that willing to help because Maggie's made some mistakes in the past so she has to rely on Trace to help.

Trace is more than willing, but he knows Maggie is keeping secrets from him. And when he finds out, his trust in her is shaken. But it's obvious someone is after Maggie and he just can't leave her hanging. The chemistry between them is strong but both have old hurts they have to get over - and a stalker to stop - if they want a chance at a real relationship.

Review:
I read the first trilogy in this series and it was so-so. Nothing that really jumped out at me as really great and making me want to keep reading the series. But like I said, there's been a lack of good new books lately and I figured I'd give this one a try. And I think I'd have to say that this one is the best of the series so far. At least in my opinion.

There's not a whole lot of connection between this new trilogy and the first one, other than the characters knowing each other. It's still considered part of the "Raines" series, but really the Raines only get mentioned in the book. They don't play a role at all. Which is a little disappointing since I like character continuity and running characters. But oh well.

I mostly liked both characters in this story. Trace is a sexy ex-Army Ranger who knows how to kick some ass. He's got a bad ass side, some trust issues, but he's really an all around nice guy and I liked him. And Maggie...I liked the fact that she was an imperfect character. She's made some really bad mistakes in her life but isn't a bad person. Her only serious flaw was that she had some really big TSTL moments that made you, the reader, just want to smack her upside the head.

But they had good chemistry together and I liked the way the relationship progressed between them. Both have trust issues and there's a few times where you kinda role you eyes over it, but it came off realistic.

I really enjoyed the side romance between Maggie's sister, Ashely, and Trace's sort of friend, Jason. Very sweet. I actually would have loved more about them. As in a book just for them. Something about those two just really intrigued me and it was a little disappointing not to get more.

Suspense-wise I thought the book was pretty good. It's not a gritty, intense suspense plot but not so low-key it doesn't seem like suspense. The author did a good job at making me want to keep reading to see what would happen and how it all works out. And whenever a book has me wanting to keep coming back to it is always a good thing. I also liked that the author kept the readers guessing about who the stalker was until the end. It adds to the mystery and suspense.

Really, I had no major complaints about the book. I pretty much enjoyed all of it. It wasn't a 5 star absolutely amazing book, but definitely a solid 4 star read.

AGAINST THE STORM by Kat Martin
Book #4 in the Raines of Wind Canyon Series
10/11 – Mira - Mass Market Paperback, 400 pages

Why is it that the one thing you want the most is the last thing you should have?

Maggie O’Connell is a well respected professional photographer with a great life, a future of success, and numerous professional accolades. Her philanthropic deeds have made her well respected in Houston which is one of the many reasons she is questioning why someone appears to be stalking her. Maggie needs help in figuring what these creepy notes mean and how they broke into her home. She turns to Trace Rawlins, a reliable private detective and ex-Army Ranger who is absolutely a cool drink on a hot Texas day.

Trace has always had a weakness for redheads and this one in particular is really ramping up his “I want that” meter. Trace is dedicated to his business and realizes that mixing some great pleasure in the “she is a client” pot is a recipe for disaster. So concentrating his efforts on finding whoever is after Maggie and stopping this person quickly because whoever it is has decided to ramp up their actions and is getting more aggressive with each passing day. Despite other cases that may distract him, his one true goal right now is to find the stalker and stop whoever it is.

The one clear objective Trace had was the truth and it appears Maggie is still holding back some important details he needs to know. She doesn’t tell him all her secrets, refuses to acknowledge that anyone in her past could be the problem, and just won’t let Trace know her true feelings. Trace has been burned and knows the pain that comes with betrayal but in order to make their personal and working relationship work Maggie has to stop the smoke and mirror routine and give everything to their partnership.

When the security system fails, Maggie’s house is set on fire, and tracking devices are found, Trace knows it is time to set the trap. His plan is brilliant and will work if Maggie can keep her cool and play her part without going off the script. Trace won’t admit his feelings for her but they are true and run deep so nothing is going to harm a hair on that perfect red head of hers – you can take that to the bank.

As a fan of Kat Martin’s and in particular this series I was looking forward to where she was going with the books. The wait was worth it as this book is a total delight with a Texas background, great storyline and well developed characters. Ms. Martin knows how to entertain the reader by giving them just enough information to make sure they are so intrigued you never want to put the book down or have it end. This book is a sure winner and great addition to the series.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I agreed to review “Against the Storm” by author Kat Martin but...I certainly didn’t expect to read a romance novel that was as fast-paced, compelling and interesting as one of today’s well-written action / adventure novels. After finishing my copy of “Against the Storm” I can completely understand why Kat Martin is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.

The premise of “Against the Storm” is this: Maggie O’Connell is a beautiful and extremely talented photographer who has, unfortunately, managed to acquire a stalker. Maggie has used all of the legal options available to her; she’s even gone so far as to move but she can’t rid herself of this psycho. When the stalking first started Maggie even went to the police but they were absolutely no help; in fact, they seemed to think she was making it all up.

One afternoon while Maggie was having lunch with a friend she happened to witness Trace Rawlins, a private investigator, intercede and handle a bad situation before it turned worse. Impressed by what she saw; knowing she needs more help than what the local authorities are willing to provide, Maggie calls Trace’s office to set up a meeting. She hopes that he will be able to help her; that somehow he can make this nightmare that has become her life go away.

Trace Rawlins is an attractive, ex army ranger who has retired and now works as a private investigator. Trace’s instincts are sharply honed and while he can tell Maggie is genuinely fearful about her predicament he can also sense that she’s hiding something from him. If the threats and letters Maggie showed him are real then Trace isn’t sure why the police aren’t more helpful. Against his better judgment he agrees to take Maggie’s case...apparently he’s a sucker for beautiful redheads.

I don’t want to give anymore of “Against the Storm” away; suffice it to say that what follows is an extremely believable and well-written story. Definitely a five-star book and a “must read” for anyone who enjoys sitting down with a great book.

Redheads like Maggie O'Connell are nothing but trouble. But Trace Rawlins, a former army ranger turned private investigator, takes the case anyway. After all, he knows a thing or two about women.
Trace can sense that something is wrong—Maggie isn't telling him everything. If these menacing calls and messages are real, why won't the police help her? And if they aren't real, what is she hiding?
As Trace digs deeper to find the source of Maggie's threats, he discovers a secret that no one was meant to uncover. And the only puzzle left to be solved is whether the danger comes from an unknown stalker… or from the woman he's trying his hardest not to fall for.
Kat Martin writes powerful stories that sweep the reader along for a fast paced ride. Trace and Maggie both have issues from their past that help shape who they are now. Their love story has twists and turns but it's well worth the journey.
What follows is a suspenseful, wildly romantic story, which will have you turning the pages to find the outcome. Ms. Martin is very good at delivering a suspenseful mystery interlaced with the right amount of romance. Even the side story of Maggie's sister is a great addition.
I recommend Against the Storm to anyone who enjoys suspenseful mysteries and spicy romances. It is a quick, easy, and delightful read. I am looking forward to the next book in the series entitled, Against the Night which is being released February 28th.

This was the last Kat Martin book in this series I had taken home free from the bookshop I used to volunteer at. I was excited to read about one of Dev's friends, but in the end, this was just like the previous books.

I wanted to DNF this when I found out the heroine had falsely accused someone of raping her when she was 16. There was nothing the author could do to justify that.

This book just felt like Dev's and the other one. They can't all be investigators.
There are so many similarities between the plot and characters. And btw, what are the chances on group of guys - brothers & friends - all get with women in some kind of peril. Seriously. So unrealistic.
Maggie's sister showing up with her baby was like the last book where the heroine adopted her sister's kid.
This is like the last two books in that she includes side characters POVs as if we care to read about them and their romances.
Every single book seems to be about a hero and heroine who don't want a relationship and think about having no-strings-attached sex with each other. Switch the damn plots up!
Maybe have two people who are looking for a relationship, or who wouldn't mind being in one.
And the heroine ends up living with the hero, just like in the previous books.
The hero always has to be the one to lead the investigation and help the heroine.
Maggie getting dressed up and going dancing was like a previous heroine who went out singing karaoke.

The attraction the heroes want to act on is very unprofessional, along w/ sleeping with clients.
This is when she's had a call from the stalker:
'He followed her into the kitchen, trying not to look at her ass.'
Can you focus on your job, the one all you guys are supposedly dedicated to? Cause you all seem unprofessional to me.

Martin's got a weird, shallow thing where all her characters, even side characters, and random ones with no bearing on the story whatsoever have to be good-looking.
Trace and one of his workers, his police friend are all good-looking. Maggie and her half sister who looks like a model.
The news reporter is very attractive. Alex Justice and Ben Slocum are also good-looking. 'Both in their early thirties, both over six feet tall, they were almost equally handsome.' Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds? And all the men are over six feet, too.
Trace is compared to Magie's exes and of course he comes out on top. He's taller/and or bigger, with more muscle. Jason is compared to Ziggy, and of course more handsome and was probably taller and bigger, too. Idr.

The heroine predictably doesn't have much of a sexual past. There's the HS guy she only slept with once, and then accused of raping her, so that relationship was, of course, over after that. Then there's like two guys, maybe three. Of course the heroine hadn't been with anyone in years, yet the heroes have a whole string of women behind them. Idk why heroines can't ever have recent boyfriends.

Jason confronts Trace about what he knows about his dad's possible murder and gets sidetrack by Maggie's sister Ashley. He keeps looking at her through the door, and then asks Trace if he minds him asking her out, as if he's her relative or something, and this is during and after finding out his brother-in-law killed his dad. Idc how good-looking you find this person, you would not let that distract you from your dad's very recent death. And not just a death, but a murder. So not the time.

I didn't like that Trace had been married. I knew Trace's ex-wife would make an appearance and that she'd kiss him, and she did. Because Martin is a predictable author. Also, it isn't a Martin novel unless the hero at least gets propositioned by another woman, kissed by them, or even further. I just sighed and kept reading. Compared to some of her other novels, this was getting off easy.

Of course Maggie was jealous of Ashley, while Ashley was jealous of her. Maggie thought her mom didn't love her, loved Ashley more, but Ashley says she bragged about Maggie all the time.

I didn't like having the names of some of the bad guys, so we knew the senator was trying to get her memory card, and who was behind the fire. It takes the mystery out of the story and ruins any surprise there could have been.

Of course Maggie's mentor who hit on her at the gallery opening turned out to be gay, he just works at the appearance of being a playboy. They hadn't even slept together! He just made innuendos to her at the gallery opening and Trace got jealous. At least he didn't see another man kiss her, like Maggie saw Trace's ex-wife kiss him.
Maggie never found out her mentor was gay, and they never met for lunch like they planned, so that was a plot element Martin just dropped.

I swear Martin has a page count to meet, because all the books are almost 400 pages and way longer than they need to be. The whole plot feels dragged out. It's just repeated instances from the stalker. A phone call, another note. It isn't even scary! When the fire hit I was like come on, that happened in the second book.

Everyone's really blase about the killer:
'"He wanted to hurt her. I just happened to be in the way."
"He could have killed you," Trace said softly.
Ashley shrugged. "That's the way crazy people are. They don't think about the consequences."'

For date night Ashley got the Prince and the Maiden. '"I promised my sister I'd help her and Trace find the stalker. I thought if we watched it we might find a clue."
Jason grinned. "Sounds like fun."'
Fun?!

Sex got in the way of serious moments, real conversations. The guys always get hard around the heroine, or even just thinking about them.
He thinks she lied to him again, and instead of confronting her about it, they have sex. As usual.
"You're angry. I knew it when you walked through the door."
"I was angry," he admitted. "I still am. But I would have stopped if you'd wanted."
"I know that. I didn't want you to stop. You're a different lover when you're angry. You set your passions free. I like it."

This heroine just wasn't one I could get behind. After lying to Trace in the beginning, she thinks it's a good idea to lie again when she knows she's got a stalker after her who started a fire in her apartment with her sister and baby inside, and she didn't want to betray her loyalty to a guy who loved her by telling Trace he tried to kill himself when they broke up.
'"Someone is angry enough to burn your house down with your sister and her baby inside, and you didn't think it was important enough to tell me?" His temper was rising again. She wondered if maybe they'd end up having another round of hot, steamy sex.'
All they think about is sex, even in serous, life-threatening situations.

First there's the accusing someone of rape. It mollifies readers a bit when we find out she just told her dad that, and wanted to fix things the next morning, but he had already gone to the cops. Only slightly mollified. I still think the whole thing's horrible. Then she doesn't tell Trace about it. Then she doesn't tell Trace that David Lyons, her ex, tried to kill himself.

Jason's sister Emily was also annoying, she lied twice to the police about her statement that her husband was home the night her dad was killed.
While she's lamenting the fact that her husband killed her dad and never loved her, & how she has to help him stay in jail by telling the truth, Jason thinks that's a good idea to say he's met someone.
At lightspeed, he's thinking of getting another car to fit Ashley and her baby. You don't even know her!

Maggie's mom calls, hearing Ashley's ex-bf was in Houston and worried they got back together, yet her mom hasn't heard of the stalker attempts or fire against Maggie?! She never did find out. How bizarre is that? Who wouldn't tell their family they have a stalker, and that someone burned their apartment?

Martin must not like her heroines, like ever. She puts them, and us readers, through the ringer. His ex shows up again, and Maggie wonders if he's seeing her on the side. She asks for $2,000 and Trace just gives it to her like a big ol idiot. Was that supposed to look nice and endearing, cause it makes him look stupid. Your ex won't quit showing up if you keep allowing her to, and giving her money.

They both want an affair yet obsess and whine over it being just sex, and wondering if it's more, not wanting it to be more, then they do, wondering if the other person feels the same way. It's exhausting. And repetitive. I wish they'd just enjoy having sex and shut up.

Trace's friends were cool, how he said she wouldn't see Rex stationed outside her house, and that she wouldn't see Alex and Ben, either.
"You won't see them. But you can be sure they'll see you" about Alex and Ben.

I didn't understand how she was any safer at Trace's when he disabled the security system at her house that was supposed to be top of the line. He could do the same at Trace's.

I feel like the whole stalker/arsonist thing was handled too easily. Trace just knows the arsonist isn't the stalker, that it's someone trying to set the stalker up. And he knows someone targeted her studio because she took a picture of something they didn't want anyone seeing.

It was cute how Jason bought new furniture for Ashley's apartment but dinged it up so she wouldn't know it was new, and sweet how he said he bought her a queen bed and said a friend was upsizing to king. That's the only thing I liked about their relationship, otherwise I wasn't feeling it at all.
In predictable fashion the side romances also develop at lightspeed, but even more so than the main characters. Jason loves her and wants to marry her. They've been on what, two dates? How is this remotely normal? Better yet, why are you writing about side characters anyway.

They very randomly wonder if Senator Logan has a yacht in the picture, then find him and the girl in the background. She has a tattoo, a very unique one. The police officer immediately knows which tattoo artist did it.

Best lines in the book:
"I love you, Trace. I love you so much. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid."
"I love you, too, Maggie, darlin'. And I'm an even bigger coward than you."

All these have a rushed wedding too. Not every book has to end in a wedding. When the characters weren't together a long time, I think the book should end in dating.
He asked about kids and felt tension waiting for her answer. That's something you talk about BEFORE you marry.
All these books are sex, and then a rushed marriage when they barely know each other. Seems Martin can't handle regular courtship and dating.
All the guys are cowboys, & there's always a ranch scene.
Don't have all your heroes be investigators and cowboys, or from Texas. Do any of these books take place outside of Texas?
Characters are carbon copies. You've read one, you've read them all. When will one stand out? I know this is romance but I want a relationship built on more than sex. But that's all this author offers. And suspense. Why must she only write suspense??
I've got one more from Martin at home I wanna read and then I'm taking a break from her. I've read too much Martin, and none have been over two stars.

All these books feel the same. They're way too similar, with the characters and plots. They're not individual enough. It feels like you're reading the same characters over and over again. I find romantic suspense plots to all be the same. This was yet another stalker case, which a lot of suspense novels are. But these books are easy, quick reads, despite their length so that's good.

I love Kat Martin's books they drag you in quickly and keep you hooked with a mixture of suspenseful drama and hot love story and neither element give in easy so you are kept guessing. What i liked most was  how much the characters got under my skin. i was blown away by Ash and Robbie, in fact by the little family as a whole, best of all half way through I still didn't know who the stalker was. The stalker reveal was great and I loved the end I will be reading the next one and I am hoping for a little catch up with couples from previous books.

In the fourth The Raines of Wind Canyon book, photographer Maggie O’Connell has a stalker, but the cops refuse to help her. So she hires a private investigator.
PI and owner of Atlas Security, Trace Rawlins has a penchant for redheads, and Maggie is as red as they come. He finds it hard to trust her, though, after she lies to him and omits certain truths that hinder the investigation.
I really liked Trace. After what he went through with his ex-wife, I totally understand his trust issues and the way he feels stuck when his ex keeps hounding him. He’s calm and protective, but Maggie brings out his temper in ways he can scarcely comprehend.
I liked Maggie at first. She’s tough and independent, and the sudden appearance of her half-sister gives her someone to care about. She’s not in touch with her emotions, and she always runs when things get too personal. After a while, her refusal to give Trace a real chance really started to bother me. They had great sex, but they refused to talk about what they wanted or their future together. They’re both at fault for that, but she didn’t care when she made him angry or when she hurt him. She would laugh and use sex to calm him down while Trace was dying on the inside.
The mystery around the stalker and the arsonist were very interesting. I had no idea who was doing it, and I loved all the clues and possible ideas the characters were coming up with.
The side characters were great—Annie, Ben, Jake, Rex, Alex, etc. I’ve only read a few books in this series and I read them out of order. I read book 8 first, Ben’s story, so it was fun to see him still in his playboy glory.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and the characters.

Against the Storm is the fourth installment of the Against series by Kat Martin. I enjoy this series because of the strong female characters and the protective, alpha men.

Maggie O'Connor is a well known, some might even say famous photographer. She loves the outdoors and getting the mosy breathtaking shots by her camera. When she finds that she has a stalker, she, at the urging if her best friend, seeks out a private investigator she met by chance.

Trace Rawlins is a former Army Ranger and total tough guy. He has a history of redheads and everyone gives him a hard time about it. When Maggie comes to him for help, he agrees. But is she withholding information from him? What if his feelings get in the way?

Can Maggie and Trace get anywhere when they both hold themselves back? You'll have to read Against the Storm to find out!

This is a great example of Kat Martin's style--she offers up sizzling romance and gripping suspense. Maggie hires Trace to help her find and stop a stalker. The attraction is almost immediate between them but they both fight it. But Maggie's troubles increase when someone burns down her studio, which happens to be in the home she's sharing with her sister and nephew. As usual, Martin offers readers plenty of clues to keep us guessing and ties everything together at the end in a believable and satisfying way.

I'm so glad I continued with this series! This is my favorite book of the series so far. Trace and Maggie have incredible chemistry. All of the secondary characters, such as Ashley and Jason, really add to the story. This story felt like an action movie! A twist at every turn, and an unexpected ending. I love how every character Kat Martin creates has an interesting background and career. Read this!

This is such a great book. Trace is attracted to red heads and doesn’t trust in love because of his ex wife. He tries to fight his feelings for Maggie. But she has a stalker. Loved the suspense level. Loved the chemistry between them and that we get a second romance of Maggie’s sister too. Thankfully everyone gets a very happy ever after. I actually had some tears at the end. I highly recommend this book.

A good romantic suspense mystery novel that keeps you guessing and has some unanticipated excitement after you think it is all wrapped up. I would have liked it better if the gratuitous sex had not interfered with the plot moving along. There were SO many bedroom scenes, it was just over the top, corny.

Maggie is a well known photographer in Texas and her specialty is pictures of the ocean. She has been getting frightening notes left on her windshield from a stalker and the last one while she was sleeping in her condo left on the kitchen counter. The police are no help so she hires Trace a PI with Atlas Security to find her unwanted stalker and stop him.

The dialogue between the romantic couple is pretty contrived (and irritating) at times, but the stalker and murder mystery plots are fun. Descriptions of the characters are a bit too florid (and unnecessary), and there may be a few too many smaller romantic side plots between other couples, but I'd read the rest of the series.

Photographer Maggie O’Connell has a stalker and the police won’t help her due to a incident when she was a teenager. She hires PI Trace Rawlings to help her. Their issues of trust and fears from emotional relationships has their romance all twisted. Yet the stalker is real.

Another great Kat Martin book.

Forecast Calls for Sizzling Squalls of Suspense

Photographer Maggie O'Connell is in trouble. Someone has been stalking her, calling and hanging up, leaving her notes. It's gone beyond creepy to terrifying. She went to the police, but her reputation is still tainted by a horrible mistake she made as a teenager. They neither believe her nor are keen to help her.

When the stalker leaves a new message on her car right outside her new condo, Maggie realizes she can't rely on the police. She's left with only one option. Private investigator Trace Rawlins.

The minute Trace sees Maggie, he pegs her. Sure, she may be in trouble, but given his history, the fiery redhead is trouble. For him. Things never go well for him when it comes to redheads. He has a weakness for them and it always ends in nothing but grief. He should hand her case off to one of his many capable investigators. That would be the sane thing to do.

Of course he takes her case.

It doesn't take long at all before he realizes just how right he had been. Maggie's trouble all right. She's obviously hiding something from him. When he finds out what it is, Trace starts to doubt everything she's ever told him.

As the stalker's behavior escalates and Maggie's home is breached, neither Trace's trust issues nor the fallout from learning the truth can alter the most pertinent fact. Someone out there has an unhealthy fixation on the fiery redhead...and he may be upping his game from stalking to murder.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just oblivious. How is it possible that I've missed author Kat Martin's romantic suspense until now? Her smooth writing style provided an easy-to-read narrative, and both the characters and the plot were nicely layered and well developed. The suspense threads were woven together with tight cohesion, some with a subtle touch that provided a few twists and turns I found particularly appealing and added a few different dimensions to the story.

I have to admit, though, I'm long past noting a trend that's starting to niggle at me a bit. I seem to read a preponderance of ex-Army/Special Forces/SEAL/[insert specialized military unit here] male lead characters in the romantic suspense genre who open/own their own investigation/protection business. I'm all for powerful alpha male roles, but I wouldn't mind a bit of variety in the type now and again and the market seems glutted with the ex-military types.

Regardless, Martin created two lead characters with several defining elements to their characters - not all of them positive - that fleshed them out nicely and made them realistic...if not always all that sympathetic. She did the same with the plotline of the book, adding weight and substance with a healthy number of secondary plot threads and a few ancillary issues that popped up for the characters. It provided a well-rounded and thorough reading experience.

That's not to say every element was to my personal taste. It wasn't. I struggled with the romance, and wasn't feeling the chemistry between the characters right away. Trace's interest in Maggie seemed too superficial, focused more on the color of her hair than who she was as a person, to appeal to me. He also had some fairly intense trust and intimacy issues, none of which I felt were satisfactorily addressed in the story beyond highlighting why they exist. I can't say his personality held universal appeal throughout the book.

Unfortunately, neither did Maggie's. I had some significant issues with her lack of honesty in several places. While I could understand her past transgression...in theory...it's sort of my definition of heinous, and frankly, I never felt a lot of sympathy for her from that point on, no matter how nice a person she turned out to be. Maybe I lack a sufficiently forgiving nature. Had she not also held critical information back from Trace on more than one occasion, I may have felt differently, but as much as I disliked Trace's trust issues, I have to admit, with Maggie, he was a little justified.

The secondary storyline with Maggie's sister was nice. I enjoyed that a lot. I wish it had been given a bit more page time, because I liked Ashley's character and her backstory had some meat on its bones. Same with Jason's character and backstory. Their burgeoning relationship, their storyline, was nicely blended with the main suspense storyline and added a nice balance to whole of the book.

Martin's suspense was carefully plotted and nicely detailed, with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. The main characters weren't consistently appealing to me, though, and that threw off my appreciation of the romance. Still, I can't help but be inordinately pleased to have come across Kat Martin's romantic suspense, and now that I have...well there are three books in this series that I haven't read yet. I'll be taking care of that oversight, I assure you.

The hero was kind of a dick. Every time the heroine hadn't told him everything he thought she should have, he was rude an dropped her like a hot potato. And the idiot woman just took the blame.
I liked the book well enough, but several times I just wanted to tell the hero to take a hike.

The suspense was really well done. The author weaves two plots together and provides a nice mix of red herrings. The romance was ok and seemed to rely a lot on both parties avoiding a relationship, then not knowing how to let the other know they changed their mind.
