3.5 stars The third story in the "Blue Line Hockey" series, features young Sergei, who is one of the out players in the Battle Creek Hawks and the captain, Kip Cooper. Sergei has deep crush for Kip, but since he knows that Kip is straight, he tries to press his feeling. Unknown to him, Kip actually keeps a secret of his own ...
The story is pretty sweet. I actually like the scene where Sergei finds out the real truth about Kip. Seriously, the anger sex is HOT!! I'm not all agree to Sergei pushing Kip to get out of the closet though. While I agree that it is BETTER to embrace who you really are, gay or straight, but coming out is a personal choice. I think being afraid of the consequences of coming out is natural; so one could do without pressure. The ending shows that love can help that decision though :)
What I could REALLY, REALLY expect from this story is better editing. Theer are a couple of typos, including wrong name written, and I'm NOT an English native!! It's not Stephani Hecht's fault, the editor at eXtasy should do better to improve the quality of the editing ...
Was ist ihm wichtiger?
Cup Check is the third installment in the Blue Line Hockey series and I have to say it is my favorite. The knowledge that the captain of the Hawks has been harboring feelings for the new addition to the team makes this story a long waited treat to read.
Sergei is new to the Hawks. He’s been sent to play for this farm team to escape the abuse and taunting from his previous team, the Cougars. Sergei is an openly gay man and that makes him a target on the ice. He may be small but he is a force to be reckoned with. He’s an extremely good hockey player and doesn’t let others prejudices keep him down. The only thing keeping him off balance is his attraction for the team captain, Kip. As I read, my heart broke for Sergei because he so in love with Kip, but Kip is straight, or so Sergei thinks.
Kip hides who he really is in fear of being outed. He believes if word got out, any hopes of playing in the NHL would be over. He’s worked his whole life to become a professional hockey player but when Sergei comes to play for the Hawks, Kip starts to reevaluate his priorities. Deciding enough is enough, he goes out one night to quench his hunger for Sergei in the arms of another man. He’s taken by surprise when he runs in to a heartbroken Sergei. Sergei feels betrayed because he thinks Kip doesn’t want him, but he soon discovers its Kip’s fear of being outed that has him holding back.
Trey Canton is an excellent supporting character in this story. He’s a shoulder to lean on for Sergei while he’s dealing with his heartbreak over Kip and his inability to admit he’s gay. Trey is a complete jokester and adds comic relief to this story by pushing Kip’s buttons until Kip is forced to admit his true feeling for Sergei.
After Sergei is attacked during a game, Kip can’t hold back his emotions or feelings for his little hockey player anymore. What Kip does to prove his love for Sergei was a tear jerking moment.
Hockey is a very aggressive sport and Ms. Hecht did an excellent job describing the sport as well as the violent acts that take place on the ice. The love scenes shared between these two men were very descriptive and explosive. The attraction and love these men have towards one another will suck you in and keep you reading to the very end. I love this series and hope there are more to come. If you’re looking for an energetic and captivating read, I highly recommend Cup Check.
Stephani Hecht is back in the game! No pun intended. I loved this book, especially Sergei with his vulnerability and shyness and broken cynicism was just adorable. And then there was Kip. Troubled, confused, just as sexy Kip. He was a great match for Sergei and we got to see him receive that final push to come out of the closet and be proud of who he was. I’m glad the love for his boy made it so worth it. And what would they do without Trey? He and his mischief innocence were so much fun too; you can always count on him to lighten the mood. I liked that we also got more hockey in this one since it was entwined with the plot surrounding the abuse Sergei received from his homophobic ex-team mates on the ice. Not that I’m a fan of the sport particularly but it’s nice that it wasn’t only a book about men who are hockey players just for the sake of it. Overall, a great new addition to the series and I’m excitedly awaiting the next one.
Team Captain Kip has been attracted to young Sergei and befriended him but never said anything because he fears his chances at the NHL will be lost if he's gay. However when they run into each other at a gay bar and have angry sex in the rain in the parking lot (really?), Sergei thinks there might be something until Kip makes it clear he'll never come out and Sergei should keep his mouth shut as well. However during the play-offs against Sergei's old team (where he took a lot of awful abuse for being gay), Sergei is very badly injured and Kip finally realizes he'd rather have him than even a career in the NHL. I really liked Sergei and felt for him and all the crap he's put up with along with his parents' treatment of him for being gay. I was angry on his behalf for the abuse he took at the hands of his old team, however I would have made Kip suffer way more. No no to sex in the parking lot Sergei. Bad move hon. Bad move. But it's a sweet story set in the hockey world.
This book focused on two members of the hockey team we'd only met in passing before: Kip and Sergei. Sergei is openly gay and has been forced out of his old team because of the rampant homophobia. Kip is in major lust with him.
It's a pretty typical getting together story - enjoyable, as Hecht's writing always is, and I thought the plot was tighter this time (perhaps because the story of these boys discovering each other was the only thing going on whereas there were other plot threads to be addressed in the previous books that took away from the love story). I really liked Sergei and was rooting for Kip to pull his head out of his arse (which he does in a very public way).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Out and proud comes with consequences in the professional world of hockey, so it seems reasonable for Kip to be frightened over anyone finding out his secret. And then it happens, his secret gets exposed accidentally to the guy he’s been lusting after. Their first encounter was unexpected (location and approach); the fact that they were destined to be a couple was not. This was a nice sports related coming out of the closet story!
This is a relatively short book but an enjoyable story. The third book in the series, this book features hockey team captain Kip (in the closet) and Sergei.
I love huge romantic gestures and public declarations of love so really enjoyed
The only major gripe I have with this story is close to the very beginning. "Sergei merely blinked a few times as an oh-boy-he-knows-I'm-alive chant danced in his head."
A perfectly fine reaction, until just a few paragraphs later you read: "Kip happened to be the straightest guy he knew. So while they may be close buddies, there was no way in hell he'd welcome that kind of attention from Sergei."
Why is Sergei so amazed Kip knows who he is when they are buddies??
So far this is my favorite of the 3 I have read in this series. Kip and Sergei were mentioned in the other books so their feelings had time to develop before the relationship occurred here. They were so cute together. I have to say, however, that Trey is my favorite character. I love his wit, sarcasm, and humor. Great read.
This is short story that packs it all in and feels a lot longer. The story is of new boy Sergei and the 'is he, isn't he' captain, Kip. This story in the series had more hockey in it, which I liked, as well as the horrible back stories of Sergei's time with a rival team. Sergei's character was stronger (a very bossy bottom, according to Trey) which I liked.
Sweet and emotional book. Kip and Sergei has to be my favorite couple in the series. OK, maybe I'm just biased, but still, the chemistry between him and Kip was amazing. And Kip... You gotta love this man! His emotional meltdown on the ice brought tears to my eyes and officially secured him a place in my heart.
aww poor Kip... being closeted sounds horrible! ! But Sergei went through so much and still came out kind hearted and hopeful abt the world and the people in it. That as well as the once in a lifetime kind of love that K&S had gave K the courage to say "FUCK IT !!!" :-)
I was waiting for their story and it was very sweet. I go all gaga over those scenes where one of them is injured and the other one suddenly doesn´t give a shizz about anything else...
Cute story. Nice to see some history between the two characters to make it feel more believable. And I always love to see the previous characters woven into the story.
Note: A 28 years old you're too old to start playing in the NHL. A hockey player know this, so making him continuing of dreaming about it, is not realist.
Young Russian skater Sergi transferred after being bullied by a rival team for being small and gay and team captain Kip soon falls head over heels for him
