Please be aware, this is not a YA/Fantasy novel - it contains notable adult-only elements.Sex, lies and experiments - Sometimes blood is not enough. After four years as an unwilling lab rat in a government medical facility, Vampire Anna is released back to society under the watch of a Guardian to try and coexist with humans.Clinging on to the edge of sanity, Anna fears losing herself to the thirst and sexual lust of Vampirism, losing the last traces of her humanity and driving away the man she entrusted with love, the one she hoped to rebuild her life around.Vampire life is a constant struggle for those trying to stay within the laws, but for Anna things become a lot more complicated when secrets about the origin of the virus are revealed by her former Guardian.
Elita Daniels was born in the early 1980's in North Queensland, and was raised (and still lives) in the historical gold city of Charters Towers. She started writing at age twenty-five, writing late at night when the house was quiet.
She aspires to move with her husband to a nice sized property located in a cooler climate, get a couple of dogs, and see "Tree of Life" made into a movie.
It is always a pleasure to read a first time authors books. Elita's originality on the vampire subject interested me hugely. The virus idea was innovative and added a new twist our usual vampire ideals. That the humans have rein over the vampires was even more amazing, especially seeing they are in reality the weaker creatures.
Each vampire is allocated a Guardian that pretty much acts as a babysitter more than protector. Checking in on the vamps and making sure they are taking their medicines, not killing people, etc. We follow the life of Anna, an infectee turned vamp and experience all her trials and tribulations in her life, some good, some rather horrible. Each chapter slowly leads you on, unfolding the secrets and innuendos as it goes. I did find the ending a bit abrupt, leaving you hanging wanting to know what happens next.
Will be interesting to see where the next book leads Anna.
So much potential in this story but it fell short. At times character development seemed on point but would then the novel would jump around so much that it would leave the reader hanging for more answers. The end left off like a sequel must be planned but was rather weak and satisfying.
People (as a whole) tend to get comfortable when reading. We stick to the same genre’s we’ve always read, and depend on authors we are familiar with to entertain us. Hopping a fence into lands we’ve never experienced before can be uncomfortable, make us second guess ourselves, even make us retreat back into the hole in which we climbed out of, and I assure you, I am no different. While I would like to say “I read EVERYTHING” that’s not exactly the truth. There are (in fact) genres of literature that bore me to death or make (for a lack of a better description) my skin crawl.
Why am I telling you this? Well, because “Guardian” by Elita Daniels is one of those books for me. Now, I’m not saying that Elita’s book bored me, or even gave me the willies, but when it comes right down to tacks and brass knuckles, “adult fiction” is just not a genre I spend much time with. That said, I understand, (and appreciate) that there is a (rather rapidly growing) audience for it, and some of those followers happen to read my blog, and… in a effort to offer something for everyone, I agreed to review this book.
Anna lives in a complicated world. Not only is she a vampire, but she is a vampire with a unique trait. She is a carrier. Having the ability to “make” vampires has landed her under a microscope and she hates it. Poked and prodded for research is not what Anna wants to spend her time doing, and lucky for her she doesn’t have to anymore. After the sudden death of her long time Guardian she is assigned a new one, and to the relief of Anna, he’s different… compassionate. Or is he? The more Anna discovers about her infection the more she realizes she can’t trust anyone but herself. Will she (despite her suppression drugs) let her instincts overrun her common sense. Will a mistake in the heat of passion come back to haunt her, and will Anna ever find the one thing she has always wanted but never found… love.
One of the more obvious problems I have with “Adult fiction” is the lack of relationship prep. While most novels “tease” and “elude” for the majority of the book, Adult fiction gets right down to business, (if you know what I mean.) Now…while in MY mind this is annoying, it can be easily overlooked if the plot surrounding the couple is solid, and adds depth to the otherwise missing emotional “build up.” In the first half of “Guardian” this is NOT the case. Elita Daniels is not new to this game. She has several books under her belt, and a few more on the way, so her lack of focus, (and general flipsy doosey with her plot in the first 40% of the book) was a little disconcerting. However…once Daniels found a steady path in which to navigate her characters; the story finally started to develop, and the second relationship in the book, (though rushed like the first) seemed much more natural and believable, (which yes, I know sounds ludicrous since we are ultimately talking about a vampire book.) By the end I found myself genuinely interested in the fate of Anna and the overall meltdown of the society in which she was placed and, despite every instinctual thought in my head to dislike this book, I can’t say that I did.
Do I think it is the best book out there? No, but I will say that for those who regularly enjoy this genre there is definitely something there. Wave off the soda at lunch and instead spend the 99 cents to get yourself a little vamp action.
Happy Reading my fellow Kindle-ites and remember: You’ll never know if you like it, until you try it. (Unless of course it’s cooked spinach, in which case you can be assured it tastes like snot.)
If there were a "despise" option, this book would have it from me.
CONTENT WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT, ABUSE, MEDICAL ABUSE, TORTURE, MISOGYNY, MURDER, POISONING IN FORM OF MEDICATION, AND MORE
This book essentially is a book dedicated entirely to the description of the abuse of WOMEN vampires. Many people have mentioned that this book is about the second class citizenship of vampires as a whole, but the fact is that this is a book that brutally relies upon rape, sexual assault, abuse, torture, control and manipulation, misogyny, and other forms of oppression of women vampires to tell its entire story.
The male vampires in here are given either an extremely brief description of captivity (but not torture) or no description of it whatsoever (and are in fact some of the perpetrators of the violence), and they certainly are not raped and otherwise subjected to sexual assault. (There is one scene in which a human male is threatened with rape from a male vampire at the same time, but it is not graphic or even physical, just alluded to as a possibility, unlike for Anna, the female main character. The male human then goes on to immediately catcall and harass Anna after she saves him from this.)
There are ways to tell stories of second class treatment without relying solely upon the violation of a person's body-- especially the type of body already treated as a second class citizen in real life. The only reason I initially read this book was because I expected it to be a balanced presentation of this idea as advertised by the book's description. Unfortunately, it resembles next to nothing of its description and more closely resembles what could be the opening scenes of a snuff film.
In addition to all of this, the book is poorly written. There's jumping from scene to scene with little explanation or tying into the plot, and the only times that the author truly slows down and focuses on the moment-to-moment scenes is when the main character is either having sex or being sexually assaulted/tortured. The flow is completely off, and the ideas presented throughout that hint at a deeper plot are completely overshadowed by the abuse detailed within. In fact, given that the "overall plot" of things that "...become a lot more complicated when secrets about the origin of the virus are revealed by her former Guardian" didn't happen until the 88% mark, I think it's fair to say that there really is no such thing here.
This book is revolting, and it's incredibly disturbing to see so many people accepting this type of book as a quality form of "entertainment." The only reason I finished this was so I could be sure to include as many content warnings as I could.
I was very lucky to receive a review copy of Guardian, a massive thank you to Elita Daniels for giving me that!
I gave this book three stars, not because I didn't enjoy reading it, but because I thought it was a bit too fast paced. Don't get me wrong, I like my books pretty fast paced because I usually get sucked into them and can't put them down! But this was a little too fast for my liking. It also seemed a bit short for me as well, although this could just be because of the fast pacing, because of that to me it seemed like a really quick read.
I did however love the storyline in the book. The book centres around Anna, who is a carrier vampire (which means she can spread the vampire disease to others!), her struggles to figure out what she wants from life, and her romantic feelings towards two very different love interests.
I absolutely loved Anna and I really felt genuine emotions for her, she came across as lost and confused most of the time and I just wanted to grab her and hug her, and tell her that everything will be alright!
I liked reading about the science bits behind the carrier virus, and the experiments going on to try to harness vampire abilities without also causing the typical vampire traits. I would have liked to find out a bit more about that side of the story, as well a bit more background information about the virus itself, and vampires being out in the open!
Perhaps a short novella type prequel would cover all that information? Fingers Crossed! :)
Overall it was a really great read, full of action, suspense and a few steamy scenes thrown in!
Guardian 5 out of 5 Stars to author Elita Daniels and her novel “Guardian.”
Before I begin, I must say, I absolutely devoured this novel.
Within the very first chapter, Daniels brings us into a world where vampires exist and are treated as second-hand-citizens. The vampire life isn’t glamorous – they have cruel experiments performed on them, they are assigned humans (many of whom are cruel) as a sort of “parole officer” to monitor their every move, and they are forced to take meds that make them ill.
I loved the scientific aspects of how vampirism could be spread as an infection, how the government would have their hands in using the disease as a weapon, and how a society’s fear of the unknown would bring out the worst in them. What I loved the most was how Daniel’s created characters that were both terrifying and fascinating. Her vampires aren’t made of fluff – they have intense emotions, they have physical urges, and they are suffering.
If you are a fan of Christopher Pike’s “Thirst” or Scott Westfield’s “Peeps,” then I suggest you check this novel out. It is edgy, raw, and the characters deal with real life situations. If you want a quick read that isn’t all neat and tidy with a happy ending, then I highly recommend Elita Daniel’s “Guardian.”
I cannot wait for her to eventually make a book 2 in the series and truly hope to see more of Anna, Greg, and Leon. The novel has so much potential for a full blown series that has grit and passion.
Really good idea for a vampire story, dark but good. 2.5 Stars.
Anna was infected with the vampirism virus eight years ago by a one night stand. She spent two of those years in a "testing clinic", aka torture chamber, being experimented upon. Now she has learned she has also recently caught the carrier virus which means she can no longer bite or feed directly from anyone or she can turn them into a vampire. She has an angsty, damaged personalty which was magnified by the virus.
In the story, she falls in love twice, once with her new Guardian, sorta like "a parole officer for vampires", and with a young man who attempted to pick her up in a diner earlier in the story.
Unfortunately the story, in my opinion, suffers from quite a bit of unfinished editing resulting in what appears to be a very rough writing style which should have been fixed in the editing stage. In fact if an editor hadn't been listed, I'd think it hadn't been edited at all. Some might think it is because the author is from North Queensland with a different vocabulary. That is not the problem at all. It may seem as if I am being overly harsh on this point but I feel the author was cheated out of a final product which could have been so much better with good editing.
The story ends rather abruptly at a point in the story where the action is starting to heat up which makes me think there will be a sequel. The story's plot itself is good enough to make me interested in reading the sequel.
Some dark urban fantasy fans and horror fans may like this book.

I was so excited when i was asked to review this book, gotta love the book covers! *winks*
I must say i really enjoyed reading this book, with all the vampire books out these days this one adds a new refreshing twist to life as a vampire. It gives us a view into what life would be like if Humans controlled the vampires.
Human's discovered this infection and once it became public each vampire was assigned a Guardian to watch over them by law.
We have Anna she was 24yrs old when she was first infected. She's been infected for roughly 8 years and 2 of those years was in a testing clinic were they did horrible things to her. They are made to drink artificial blood and are tested often to check they stick to it. Anna's new Gaurdian Leon is a scientist he's interested in finding a cure to the infection.
Human's can be so cruel!! (but so can vampires!) lol
It's got me hanging for the next installment. It may be a short story to read but it's well written that it gives you so much more. I'd recommend this book to all the Paranormal readers, this gives you a nice taste of something different. *winks*
I really, really wanted to like this book. I love the premise. The cover is amazing. Paranormal romance is great. But this book just fell short. There were many, many missed opportunities to really give the reader an inside glimpse to what was happening in her head while still giving the action a go.
The whole idea of the Guardians and what they're really supposed to do was left up in the air a bit. What were the rules? What was their purpose? One guy is taking her home to take care of her and another is taking control of all her assets and basically leaving her to scrounge to survive. Is there a governing body?
But, if you want the erotica part of paranormal romance, that's there. A lot. Did I mention the erotica?
This was a very cool and interesting take on the idea of Vampires. In this story, Anna is "infected" with the vampire virus. It is seen as a sickness that needs to be cured and her guardian is there to help her. The storyline was very fast paced and reminded me at times of the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It was a sexy, edgy vampire thriller. A quick and energetic read and not like a typical vampire story. The sex scenes were a bit over the top but at the same time, they were not numerous which made them palatable and not too much at all. I would recommend this book to someone who likes vampire novels with a great Adult/YA twist!
This isn't the greatest book in the world. It was a freebie from Amazon. It is about Anna a vampire and how she lives her life in the future when Vampirism spreads because of a virus that was generated in a lab. The vampires have human guardians to watch over what they are doing. Anna wants to be a regular person and desperately wants to avoid her blood thirst. The most interesting thing is the science behind vampirism but even that doesn't go into extraordinary details. Basically this book was confusing in it's plot, theme, and general idea. If it had more focus I think it would have been a much better book.
Elita has reinvented the vampire in this gripping story of a search for self and espionage. They are the result of a bio-weapon, of sorts, gone wrong. Alicorp, a government corporation gone amuk, doesn't even understand what they have unleashed on the world. Anna is a carrier vamp with a conscience. I was completely drawn into this world and the characters; I didn't want to put this book down. While Anna has finally found someone she feels she can trust, a plot line of espionage has developed that may change everything. This is going to be a great series, I can hardly wait. The story flowed well and I don't recall any editing errors.
A great vampire story, just so good from start to finish!! Amazing read!! More to come!!;)
Well lets just say i love the fact that this was so dark. Anna was just the best and her story was heart stoping and I think she might be my number 1 vampire!!!! LOL She has such a crazy life and how so deals with things in that whatever meaner made it that much better. I am excited for book 2 to really get lots more from her and the 2 guys in her life. Its a great read for sure so make sure you get your copy SOON!! You will not be disappointed!!
Really, really enjoyed this! Highly original premise with richly developed characters and a strong female protagonist to root for. I loved Anna. I loved the new twist on vampires and how they have been integrated into society over the years. The author has clearly spent a great deal of time creating a deeply believable world where vampires and humans live along side each other. The writing style was amazing. Very taut and crisp, echoing the great hard boiled writers of the '40s such as Jim Thompson. Highly recommended.
A short story about Vampires and Humans living together in the world. Anna, the main character has been in a research facility for years and now can live within society. The story takes you along for a bumpy ride on Anna's wants and needs. There's a lot of sex in the book and the story is short lived but it's an interesting intake on the vampires living within the humane society. It was a different read but I enjoyed the quick read.
Vampires and humans living together in peace. The night life belongs to the undead and Humans are attracted to this way of life. Not unlike released prisoners,Vampires are under observation by Guardians.Scientist are conduction experiments. Vampires living with prejudice.
I actually really enjoyed this story until the abrupt ending. I was ready to give it 4 stars. I like the twist that vampires came from a virus. Nice plot and character development.
Potential to be good. A bit too rushed. Would have made a better 300 page novel than a short story. The ending was so abrupt that I actually thought I didn't have the full download.
