This book, a transcript of the second term of Clare Martin's introductory course in astrology given for the Centre for Psychological Astrology, continues her clear, insightful and innovative presentation of the basics fo astrological study. Exploring the planetary aspects and the houses of the horoscope, the ten lessons focus on the horoscope as a dynamic interweaving of polarities: not only the angles, the houses, and their related zodiacal signs are examined from the perspective of complementarity, but also the enigmatic Moon's Nodes, which are interpreted from a fresh and exciting perspective. Major and minor aspects are illuminated by examples and discussion from the group, and the importance of a missing element or aspect is discussed with originality and depth. Volume 2 of Mapping the Psyche is a superb successor to Clare's first volume on the planets and the zodiacal signs, and will provide solid groundwork for students taking their first steps in astrology, as well as deepening the understanding of experienced practitiones who can benefit from Clare's beautifully structured, elegant and comprehensive approach.
i really like martin's writing style (i. e. the fact that this book, like her last, is essentially a transcription of lectures she gave), but it can be a bit exhausting to read at times. especially when discussing certain placemements / aspects... having it take the form of a dialogue between students & teacher makes it a lot harder to follow and synthesize than if she just wrote it categorically.
i also wish she didn't have the association b/t the 12 houses & 12 signs, but i understand that in the CPA circles she was writing in, that was the prevalent method of viewing the houses. her points stand by themselves most of the time, but it's annoying to have to remember that the themes of the houses & signs do not align neatly.
An excellent book on psychological astrology - in spite of the fact that I'm prone to the traditional approach as an even more precise tool for behavioral observation. Any inaccuracies within this kind of practice are certainly due to the experimental nature of psychology and how personal interpretations sometimes seem to fill the empty spaces when it comes to analyze personality traces and complexes. Still, a really profound and technical reading on the astrological houses and the planetary aspects and patterns in the form of a seminar. Recommended.
