Meg and Rayner, a German soldier, fall in love despite the fact that the Germans are occupying Meg's beloved home. Sounds interesting... and incredibly romantic, doesn't it? Unfortunately, this book does not fulfil its potential. The characters were a bit flat and annoying (esp. Meg and Gerald) and I just expected so much more. If you want a war romance, try The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons instead.

I almost didn't want this book to end. I couldn't put it down and had to keep reading to know what was going to happen next. It was a bit predictable in places, but well worth the read. You don't often read books about those who lived on the British Channel Islands during their occupation by the Nazis during World War II. People don't tend to realise that a part of Britain did fall into Nazi German hands. This book paints a vivid picture of what life was like for the islanders for those years.

This book read like a young adult novel, but I enjoyed it. The author uses the sense of smell to good effect. The romance between Meg and Rayner is plausible since she met him before the war. Now he's a Nazi officer and she must make hard choices.
I like how the Germans are depicted as both bad and good as through my research on this period was the truth. Setting the story on the island of Guernsey added to the interest.
Gerald could get annoying with his persistence, but he came out better at the end.
The ending was satisfying.

I had a hard time getting through the first part of this book but had to carry on because my Nannie gave it to me! I’m so glad I did because it soon pulled me in and I loved it. It was good for me to read more about this time period and what life could have been like for a young girl in Meg’s circumstances. The power of love and the strength it gives the characters in this story was beautiful. A lovely love story and definitely worth sticking with!

Brilliant story

Another lovely story from this author different from the others she has written but just as good living through the war year's must have been difficult for lots of people but having to live in the same house must have been terribly hard and even worse if you fall in love with one of enemy. They say that love says it all it certainly did for all those in this story.loved it.

Wasn’t too bad a listen. Took use of listeybooks which just joined and loans audio books like a library and wanted an easy listen and this book fit the bill while ticking off the book with song title in. Set in WW2 about a girl in occupied Guernsey falling in love with a German soldier who was an old friend of her brothers. Easy read but story stalled a bit kn some places.

Life under an occupying force

This is an interesting story of life on the channel is!and of Guernsey during World War II. We follow one woman in particular, but also see the developments in and among families and friends as the normal life on the island changes when taken over by the German army. Hardships prevail, relationships are tested and emotions are thrown into turmoil. How would we have acted under similar circumstances? I do recommend this novel.

What a book!

I have read many WW2 novels but this one came from such a rare perspective: the hardships suffered on the occupied island of Guernsey.

Lily Baxter writes in a way that warms your heart but keeps you sitting upright in anticipation - a perfect mixture of comfort and tension.

I have now read all five of Lily Baxter’s books, and if you haven’t read any of them yet, just know that you won’t be disappointed!

This was a nice tale worthy of a comfy chair, soft blanket and a cuppa. Well written and full of action with a few twists here and there. Set in Guernsey both before and after the Germans invaded the island. Will things ever be the same? That will be telling!!

Interesting story of life as it is lived after the enemy take over, all I can say is as hard as we had it in England we did not have to live under enemy dictatorship, and I thank GOD for that!!!

Excellent story

Apart from the romantic storyline, it was an eye opener to me as to how badly the people suffered in the channel islands during WW11!

Meg is on holiday in Oxford from Guernsey with her sister when she meets Rayner a German student. However this is is 1939 and within a short time the island is occupied by German officers and when Rayner appears Meg is forced to decide between her twin loyalties.

I felt this book was alright as far as it went but promised so much more than it actually delivered and was very stilted at times. The characters weren't very likeable and were hard to believe at times.

I read this book as we have just marked 70 years since the liberation of the Channel Islands and it does show the privations of war both for the locals and the occupying force.

However there are better books of the period that you shoud rea.
