Harriet was a real tortoise from the Galapagos Islands ... who lived for most of her long, long life in Queensland.
When Harriet died in 2006, at the great age of about 175-years-old, she had become one of the world's most famous tortoises.
It was said she was one of the tortoises collected by the great naturalist Charles Darwin and the ship HMS Beagle, when it visited the Galapagos Islands in 1835.
But was she? In the story of Harriet, Anthony Hill tried to find out...
Anthony Hill was born in Melbourne on 24 May, 1942. In a varied career he has been a newspaper and television reporter, political journalist, antique dealer, speech-writer for Australia's Governor-General, and now full-time author.
Harriet book review 4.5 This book is like a documentary. It starts on Galapagos island with one tortoise journeying to Australia zoo. This story is interesting because it’s an incredible tortoise that came a long way with many sacrifices to get to a safe place, still dreaming that she will get back home to the Galapagos island one day. We like this story because I know more about the Galapagos tortoises and also, it’s interesting to know about a tortoise's life story and details about the tortoise and what their perspective is in their eyes. Cleverly written as fiction with a lot of information about the wonderful Galapagos Tortoise. I'm fascinated by the Galapagos Islands and looking forward to travelling there one day! It certainly had its sad moments.
