Bad Mood!

Rate this book
Badger gets up one morning feeling very grumpy. ""Humph!"" Badger says to himself. ""I'm in a bad mood. Maybe I'd better stay at home."" But at breakfast Badger reconsiders. What is the point of being in a bad mood if nobody notices? he thinks. So Badger heads out, slamming the door behind him. Badger spreads his bad mood far and wide, greeting all his friends with angry, rude remarks, which puts them in bad moods, too. By afternoon, Badger has come up with a fine way to shed his own bad mood, but what can he do to cheer up the other animals? A comical, cautionary tale for anyone who has ever gotten up on the wrong side of the bed.

What a wonderful book this is! A simple story with a fabulous message.

Badger has woken up in a really bad mood. (I so empathise with him. Mornings can be tough!) As he goes along his day, he rebuffs all friends who attempt to chat with him. While his mood improves as the day progresses, he realises that his friends are now in a grumpy mood, all thanks to him.

The story is written in simple prose and fairly easy vocabulary. Early readers should be able to handle the book independently as well. There are many expressive dialogues so this will be a treat for read-alouds. I loved the illustrations too. They are so vibrant! The animals are drawn in such an expressive manner that you can gauge their mood just by looking at them.

The only minor complaint I have is that the dissolution of Badger’s bad mood happens within the span of a sentence. It seemed too abrupt and kids wouldn’t really realise how there was a sudden turnaround in his feelings. This is where discussion with an adult would help. After all, we understand mood swings better than kids do and need to assist them on how to handle bad moods as a realistic and regular part of life.

I have a feeling this book is going to be useful for adults too, so don’t forget to read this along with your kiddos. It has a lesson that all of us need to remember. You might just save yourself (and others) from having a bad day. ;)

Heartily recommended for families, schools and libraries.

4.5 stars from me.

The Bad Mood is a cute story with an important message for children.
Badger wakes up and is in a bad mood. He decides he may as well let everyone know he's in a bad mood and takes his mood out on all his forest friends. They in turn, also get in bad moods. Badger goes home and does some gardening and his bad mood disappears. But when he goes to play with his friends, he can't find them anywhere. Badger realises his mood has passed from him onto them because of how he treated them and he has ruined their day.
Badger apologises and makes them happy again to correct his mistake.
This is a great book to show children how taking your mood out on others can affect them too and also ways to get rid of a bad mood such as physical exercise, gardening, singing and dancing.

When Badger gets up on the wrong side of the bed, he decides to share the love misery.
What was the point of being in a bad mood if nobody noticed? Everyone ought to know how miserable I feel, he thought.
Aiming for maximum rudeness and hostility, Badger manages to alienate all of his friends. Once he’s successfully spread his bad mood to everyone he comes across, Badger goes home.

As moods will do, Badger’s changes once he focuses on something other than how bad his mood is. But now all of his friends are in bad moods when he’s ready to play.

Badger learns that it’s not okay to take your bad mood out on others. Ultimately he takes responsibility for his actions and apologises to his friends.

If I was reading this book to a child I’d be taking the opportunity to talk to them about anger and the different ways it can be managed without hurting others.

I enjoyed the illustrations but the layout could have been improved by making the text larger.

Badger wakes up in a bad mood. He ignores many off his friends but as the day continues his mood improves. It's then he realises many of his friends are in bad moods because of him.

It's a great book and I feel early readers may be able cope with it. The illustrations are awesome.

Some discussion may be necessary especially with Badgers friends reaction. But I feel the discussion would be worth while.

Enjoy!

The first page of the story is instantly relatable--probably to both kids and adults--as Badger wakes up in a bad mood but, instead of staying home or doing something to make himself feel better, goes out into the world and conveys his bad mood to everyone around him.
I had to laugh at Badger's internal dialogue while he's having breakfast and deciding whether to stay in or go out: "What is the point of being in a bad mood if nobody notices?"
Unsurprisingly, the bad mood spreads, and no one much wants to be around Badger after that. It's up to him to make things better. This is a well-illustrated children's book with a simple but strong message about the way our feelings can impact others and how to be a considerate friend even on a bad day.

Thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for this digital review copy.

We all have a bad mood from time to time. This quick story follows Badger as he wakes up in a bad mood and decides he must let all his friends know about it. By the time his grumpiness has worked its way out of his system, all his friends are in a bad mood and want nothing to do with him!

While the ending does seem abrupt and a little too easy, it still makes sense. For the audience, it works. The message here is a good one and not too difficult to understand. The illustrations are quite cute, too.

Overall, this is a nice little book about the way a bad mood can ruin our day, as well as everyone else's. But only if we let it.

I have taken a recent interest in children's books because of my 4yr old son who is an emerging bookworm! I have reviewed a few children's books for The Daily Star, a newspaper based in Dhaka. My reviews can be found on my Instagram @booksnher and the daily star books official website.

I am so glad I came across this book! The illustrations are adorable. And the message is simple but profound: that no matter how much of a bad day we are having, we should try our hardest to not project our frustrations onto others, especially if they wish us well. The illustrations are absolutely adorable and I found myself going back to look at them, I love the badgers grumpy little expressions! I will add the review with a photograph on my Instagram for my followers.

Cant wait to read this book to my son during naptime tomorrow!

I really loved the images in this book, they sorted the story really well too and brought the book to life.

I thought that the book had a really good flow to it and it was easy to follow.

I liked the underlying theme to the story too and how the bad mood was passed on.

My four year old daughter is learning all about being kind at the moment and she really enjoyed this one so it is a hit from me!

It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended!

Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the chance to read The Bad Mood.

Is it weird that I love books that teach kids about emotions? Badger is in a bad mood and it’s contagious! This wonderfully illustrated book takes the reader along on Badger’s bad day, showing that our actions and moods can affect others.

Overall, my 5 year old and I enjoyed the book, but I do wish the turn around in Badger’s mood and the resolution were a little more flushed out. It did provide us with a great opportunity to discuss when we, or someone else, is in a bad mood and how to appropriately handle it.

Having a bad mood isn’t something new, right? We get irritated and take it on others for no reason. But once we feel better, the guilt of our behavior starts to make us feel bad (or maybe not).

Badger does the same when he wakes up in a bad mood. He feels sad that his friends are rude to him and realizes that his past actions were to blame. The problem is solved by apologizing to them and having a bad mood party.

The concept is simple and well-executed. However, a bad mood doesn’t just slip off. Since the book is aimed at kids, it would have been nice to see how Badger got out of his bad mood. Still, elders can help kids understand and maybe even try to manage their bad moods better.

The illustrations are soft, warm, and cute. The text could have been bigger to make it easy on the eyes.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and NorthSouthBooks and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A charming story about a badger in a bad mood, what resulted from his actions and how he, with the help of a friend, made everything right. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, I do love what they did, I found it very funny, especially how you needed to be, to be invited. I’m still laughing! 😆

The illustrations are lovely. Beautiful artwork.
Kids will love this book and it will be a great way to have a discussion between parents and kids that our actions have consequences and how we treat others matters. To be careful of bad moods and that there is always a way to make things right with good wills.

A huge thanks to the publisher for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book tells the story of Badger who wakes up one morning grumpy and unwillingly steps out of his house in his bad mood that he spreads to everyone around him. Oblivious to the spread of the ‘grumpiness’ he goes on with his daily activities only to snap out of it and realise that he had spread his ‘bad mood’. Oh mayn , this book lived true to the title. I enjoyed this delightful book and highly recommend it

Waking up in a bad mood sets the stage for others to be in a bad mood too. Badger greets his animal friends with his mood and wonders why his friends are in a bad mood when his mood changes. It is a funny look on how we can look at ourselves and how we affect with others. A great book to enjoy with your kiddos for a long time.

The Bad Mood is a wonderful story to teach young children about how their mood and the way they treat people can impact others' feelings. Badger takes his bad mood and pushes it off on all his friends by being mean to them. This is turn puts his friends in bad moods. His apology at the end makes it all worthwhile. A great book for 4K and Kindergarten teachers!

Bad mood can be contagious.

This book is certainly not just for kids but also for adults.I have finished the book fast and despite the small amount of pages involved, it's still full of substance. This is the kind of book I would definitely read to my nephew.

So wait..bad moods are really contagious all the times i have been grumpy does that mean i actually kind of shared it with other people.Well i just want to say am grateful i got the chance to read this wonderful book and i learnt a lot of things like for instance, when in a bad mood its better to talk to someone than let your emotions get the best of you .For instance we see Badger later that day in his garden and suddenly his mood lightens up ,i guess doing something we love with full concentration changes everything sometimes.I guess i also learnt my grandfather was right when he said sometimes you should be happy and laugh with people and avoid being a burden to those around you.I just want to thank the badger because through him i have learnt from and seen my mistakes .

Oh this was absolutely delightful [and I cannot wait to recommend this one to all my friends who are parents to littles] and a great tool for parents/caretakers to use to talk about moods [good AND bad] and how they affect everyone around them [good AND bad] and the importance of seeking out those affected by one's bad mood or rudeness and asking forgiveness [and perhaps explaining just why they were in a bad mood - sometimes sharing is helpful as well]. Everyone has bad moods and this is a really good way to show how it can affect others and it also shows good ways to get rid of the moods that often negatively overtake us.

Along with this really lovely little story, you have some amazing illustrations by Amelie Jackowski; they are just perfect for the story and will also engage littles as you talk about what is going on in the pictures as well as the written story.

Very well done.

Badger wakes up in a very, very bad mood. But…he decides to go out any way. Badger shares this mood by being a bit mean and rude to his friends. Later, when he feels better, he makes amends. That is the gist of this children’s story that has sweet illustrations.

I like that Badger sees that his mood changes over the course of the day. This is a helpful message for a grumpy kid. What I liked less was that there was no initial understanding or acknowledgment for how he felt given to Badger. The focus was more on his rudeness. However, I think kids should be applauded for being able to identify their emotions and helped to cope with them.

Maybe this is too much criticism for a kid’s book but I think that the adult who reads this with a child should spend a few extra minutes talking about moods and how to cope with them.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

"The Bad Mood by Moritz Petz with illustrations by Amelie Jackowski looks as if it was originally published in 2004 in Switzerland. In fact, the end paper says it's a "beloved classic." It's a beautiful book about a badger who wakes up in a bad mood and thoughtlessly spreads it to everyone he meets. He then has to fix things.

What I particularly like about this book is that Badger's mood lifts, not because someone points out the error of his ways, but because the mood "slipped right off him" while he's working outside. There's no lecture here about the value of physical activity on the mind, but we do see something positive happening.

Nor is there a lecture on making things right with those you've wronged. Again, we just see it happening.

Show, through story and image, don't tell. A lovely book.

Another Badger book is coming next April."

What a beautiful book which is not only perfect for children but also sends a good message to adults.

The book is about Badger, who has woken up in a really bad mood and procedes to take his bad mood out on all his friends he meets that day, and then goes home does a bit of gardening and his bad mood lifts and he feels better. Later on he goes out again feeling better to play with his friends but cannot find them as he upset them all early when he was in a bad mood and now he cannot find them as he upset them.

A great book written in a brilliant way with beautiful illustrations, and although primarily aimed at children, I feel this is more useful for adults to read and take on board, as the story is such a true depiction of every day life, as you usually end up meeting or working with a badger!

Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books, Inc. for a copy of "The Bad Mood" in exchange for my honest review.

This book is aimed at preschool to grade 3 - a great book to read to children or have them read once they are able to. The badger is a cute character but he wakes up in a bad mood. He makes sure everyone knows that he's in a bad mood and he's rude to everyone. After working in his garden he's in a better mood and goes looking for others to play with but there is no one around. The animals let him know that they are not happy with how he treated them.

A lesson from this book is that it is never okay to take your bad mood out on others. It's important to apologize and to forgive. A bad mood can be contagious. Grumpy or rude remarks makes everyone have a bad mood.

This book is a great tool for parents and educators to start a conversation about how to treat others.

'The Bad Mood' is a relatable story about how bad moods can spread, what you can do about them, and how you can fix it should your bad mood "infect" others. The artwork is stunning - kids will love the angry-eyed cuddly forest creatures!

If I had one note that would really take the book from good to great, it would be the font. It was pretty small and it would be more engaging if it were a bit more artistic to flow with the story.

I love children's books that are appropriate for younger readers, but also have a point an older sibling (or adult) might need to hear. Often, when reading to a little brother or sister while big bro or sis is in the room, a book's message will get through to everyone in earshot. That's not a bad thing.

Moritz Petz shares three important messages through his writing.

There is no obligation to share your bad mood.

It's possible to hoist yourself out of a bad mood.

It's important to apologize to friends you hurt.

The illustrations in this book are lovely. I do wish the words could be spread out on the page, perhaps a sentence at the top and a sentence at the bottom.

Thank you to NetGalley, NorthSouth Books, and Moritz Petz for an ARC of this book.

I received an ebook copy of this book through NetGalley for review. This book tells the story of Badger, who’s having a bad day and about to make it everyone else’s problem. But when everyone else starts to treat him badly too, he sees that he shouldn’t have taken out his anger on his friends. I thought this was a wonderful little parable which teaches a valuable lesson in treating people the way you would like to be treated. I would definitely consider using this text during a storytime focused on emotional regulation, anger, or social-emotional learning,

This is a cute children's board book about a badger who is in a bad mood, so he is grumpy and rude to his friends.
His friends get upset with him and once he realises what he has done to them, he tries to make it right. This is a lovely story about how we should think about how we treat the people around us, and make sure we treat people with kindness, even if we don't feel so good ourselves. The book is very good, with a good message, and the images are bright and colourful.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
