Describes the composition of good garden soil, stresses the need for humus, and offers advice on solving soil problems for vegetables, flowers, lawns, trees, and container gardens
Even though the product information in this book is outdated, the principles are everlasting. This is the best organic gardening book to have in a gardening library. It's the "everything you need to know to get started and keep going" guide. It explains the importance and critical role in development and maintenance of healthy soil in an excellent manner and it isn't overwhelmingly scientific.
3.5 Star. Good resource for the average gardener, especially veggie gardening. Divided into: Understanding Your Soil & Managing Your Soil. Importance of composting is the prime message. Basic chemical needs are presented simply. Good charts and comparisons throughout. (Library hold)
This was a very complete book with chapters on soil chemistry, nutrition, micro-organisms, composting, problem soils, and needs for different types of plants. A book I would love to own to refer back to as questions ans problems arise.
Loved this book so much that I'm buying my own copy. If you want to understand what's going on in the soil, read this book. It is written in easy to understand language with lots of illustrations. It's helping me to be a better composter and a better gardener.
I checked this book out twice at the library, then decided to order a copy so I wouldn't keep monopolizing it. It's so well organized, with so much specific information that it's worth keeping as a reference.
Probably a little more technical and not region specific enough for me to use this as a frequent reference book but definitely informative enough to add to my gardening books library.
