Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I'm going to be honest. Even though I enjoy the Fishman Arc, solely because we get to see a mangaka finally tackle racism within its world-building through surprising allusions to the Black Civil Rights Movement, the storytelling of this arc just falls flat in its slow-pacing and lackluster villain. Hody Jones is just a drugged-up, Jenny Craig, Walmart version of Arlong. He's so infuriatingly boring and unmenacing for someone whose supposed to be a GREAT WHITE SHARK.
I guess a better comparison is that Hody Jones and his gang are like a bunch whiny mumble-rappers with ghost writers obsessed with Gucci, while Arlong and his crew are like rappers from the 90's, the best era filled with the real spirit of competition, people who took pride in their craft and actually had the lyrics of rebellion within a cultural movement. But now--I digress, I guess a character like Hody would make sense then, especially since he's dissing the elders. There's just no menace or real stakes involved for someone to go up against Luffy or Zoro. The drivel of taking over Fishman Island is just nauseating (also disappointing because I was anticipating the Fishman Arc for so long).
So yeah. Art and world-building, thumbs up. Storytelling and character introductions, thumbs down.

At long last, Fishman Island! It's been hyped up almost since the beginning, and been the next main destination for good half a decade. After many side-tracks and terrible drama and some undersea journey, we're finally here!
And does it hold up? Well... not quite.
It's not bad. Oda brings forth all his usual imagination and artistic flair, and creates another great adventure locale for the main characters to get into trouble in. Yet another realm where I too would love to visit, yet sadly never can. No worse than the sky island, Water Seven, or many others. It's just that it was set up with far greater expectations, the sort that no mortal author - even Eiichiro Oda - could hope to match. I ended up enjoying the journey there more: a perilous voyage under the sea, with tension and danger and some laughs, light and darkness, fantastic vistas, even some good nature lessons.
A nosebleed gag being turned into something dramatic doesn't work so well either.
So overall, this is the weakest One Piece in a good while. Merely "great" instead of "fantastic". Alas, how low we can go.
2025 reread : the decent toward Fishmen Island is a lot of fun. I was glad to see the cow/fish hybrid from Arlong Park again. This arc is rather short and therefore it is very dense in information from the get go. Which slows me down a bit in my reading (One Piece is so wordy!). But I think this is a very good start for the arc and I love the friendship between Luffy and Shirahoshi; it's fun how he complains he is a crybaby when he was such a crybaby himself in the flashbacks. And I love that despite thinking she is a crybaby he still doesn't hesitate for a second before taking her on an adventure.
Honestly, the Fishman Island arc is not a favorite of mine (I'm looking forward to Punk Hazard more). But, even with that, I love the friendship between Luffy and the mermaid princess. And it's nice to see how all the crew got stronger.
New adventure since they're promise to meet Cami and Jinbei back to Fish-Man Island before Ace's death. As always they journey never been smooth. I'm kinda wanna see their new power! Maybe soon? BUT their clownish attitude is never changed. Lol.
Meet new enemies. Who are they? I'm assumed they will be connected with Fish-Man Island!
One Piece, Vol. 62 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (604–614) of the on-going manga series.
This tankōbon begins a new story arc. As the Straw Hats near Fishman Island, they are attacked by the New Fishman Pirates, a crew of hostile fishmen, and fall overboard. Though separated again, the Straw Hats are able to make it to shore thanks to the friendlier fishmen and mermaids of the island.
Monkey D. Luffy immediately begins to seek out the rest of his crew, while reconnecting with friends he has not seen in two years and exploring the island. When Madam Sharley, a fortuneteller, predicts that Luffy will destroy the island, the Straw Hats are invited to the royal palace. However, this was a ruse, as it is revealed to be a plot to detain them and save the island – preventing them to fulfill the prophecy of destruction.
When the Straw Hats assembled there learn of this they are forced to defeat the island's king Neptune and his royal guard and take control of the palace to avoid capture.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. After two years, the Straw Hats are finally beginning their undersea journey to Fish-Man Island. When a local fortuneteller predicts Monkey D. Luffy destroying Fish-Man Island, the Straw Hats are falsely accused as criminals, which don’t sit well with them.
All in all, One Piece, Vol. 62 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.
One Piece Volume 62 and the “Fishman Island” arc it is the start of had interested me in the lead up because it was following up on the Arlong story arc from early in the day/the height of my childhood One Piece reading. The Arlong arc was one of my favorites so I was curious to see where Oda Sensei would take the follow-up and the expansion of the Fish Men and mermaid mythology, particularly as we got a little expansion on it just before the Time Skip (including Nami’s lingering issues with Fish Men).
In general I like the initial trip to the Island with the various encounters with sea monsters and underwater volcanoes. The island’s introduction itself has been good and I really liked the variation in Fish Men and Mermaid designs (Oda Sensei as always is imaginative in the designs) as well as the incorporation of various ocean myths from around the real world). I suppose if I had a complaint about this volume it was Oda Sensei introduced way too many new characters and factions which made it hard to keep track of. Otherwise this was a very enjoyable read and start to the new arc.
Oda trying to write a take on racism when his entire series is overtly sexist, one of the main characters is an utter pig, and the drawing is hyper sexualised, and gotten even worse since the timeskip, is kinda funny.
Hody Jones is Arlong from Temu
I'm bored

The fastest way to New World is to cross Jimbe's homeland "Fish-man Island". The straw hat pirates had their upgrades, this is the best time to show it.
they’ve reached fishman island but got split up again (of course)
sanji seeing girls once more after two years cried more than when he left baratie
the princes had news from jimbei to pass to the straw hat crew.
fishman island is now under big mom (was whitebeard's) and they have to pay her in sweets every month.
madame shirley prophesied that fishman island would be destroyed the luffy. neptune made a trip down and invited the straw hat crew to ryuuguu palace. we meet princess shirahoshi~ she thought that luffy was there to assassinate her (like every other person) so she was crying but when an axe came through the door, luffy blocked it for her.
the straw hat crew were apprehended because they were suspected of the kidnapping of mermaids (it was caribou's misdeed). the axe was from vander decken who proposed to shirahoshi multiple times but was rejected every time. it's cursed with a spell that tracks shirahoshi so she cannot step out of her room.
hordy jones and vander decken are working together to bring down the monarchy.
luffy is taking the princess out for a swim since she was trapped indoors for the past 10 years and have always wanted to see the ocean forest.
O kadar aksiyondan sonra bu hikaye çok zorlama geldi, çok sıkıcıydı. Cilt bir an önce bitsin istedim.

I will start out by saying that it has been fun in this volume to just be sailing to a new place. After all the hustle and hustle of the past handful of volumes, I enjoyed having a sense of adventure just being able to start exploring new places again. Other than that I didn't really like this volume too much. A lot of new characters were thrown at us at the same time. It was harder to get a grasp on everything going on. By the end it was better and things were improving as the story was starting to form, but it was a rough start to the fish man island story. One last thing, whatever is going on with Sanji is not only annoying but also getting old. I don't really love where his character has been going since the time skip, but I am not a fan so far.

Pretty good, some characters get introduced who you know will be important later, the strawhats get split up and it's a fun things that they'll meet one another again soon
