This is it. The final of a beloved series. I cried, I laughed... I laughed with my eyes full of tears. I am going to miss Tamaki. And Haruhi. And the Club. And the fans. And Antoinette.
It was.. It IS a perfect ending.
When Haruhi confesses her feelings.
When everyone (and I mean, everyone) helps Tamaki get to the airport to see his mom.
When they have their first date and the rest of the Club are there to save Tamaki.
When Haruhi gets her scholarship to study in Boston and Tamaki moved out with her. And the Club too ()
When... when we get a glimpse of their wedding in the future.
Waaa, I can't believe there is no 2nd season in the anime... and that there is no prospect of the 2nd one in a near future...
Re-read: September 2020 Holy crap 18-year old me had a lot to say about this book. I really don't think there is much that I can add to my review. I really loved this volume and this series as a whole. The main plot is funny and dramatic and amazing, but I'd also recommend checking out the bonus chapters that the author has released!
Rankings of my favorite host-club members (this actually changed a lot!): 1. Kyoya 2. Hunny 3. Kaoru 4. Tamaki 5. Hikaru 6. Mori
Re-read: December 2018 I can’t believe that I’ve read this series 4 times! Pretty much once every year since I first read it. I’m amazed that I still enjoy this series and haven’t grown tired of the plot. The plot is particularly crazy in this volume, but it works perfectly.
Ouran always undercuts the drama with humor, and while some people may hate it, I love it. I don’t usually enjoy overly dramatic scenes and I thought that there was just enough humor to lighten the mood of the book. My favorite example of this occurs after And the author continuously makes fun of tropes like still being at the gate 5 minutes before takeoff. (Sidenote: I am sure that Tamaki’s dad enjoyed his dramatic stomach-pain performance.)
The thing that keeps pulling me back to the series is the characters. I love them all so much, and I do mean all of them. There isn’t a real villain in this story, so I love all the characters, including the supporting characters like Kuze and Mei. However, my favorites are, of course, the host club members, and I think it’s fitting that this volume focuses on them. This is their story after all. And because this is their story, I’m going to spend the rest of my review talking about each of the host members. Be prepared for an essay!
Haruhi Ah Haruhi, our androgynous main character. Haruhi’s development is not as apparent as that of the other host club members, but she’s changed significantly throughout the series. While most of the host club members matured over the course of the series, Haruhi kind of did the opposite. She didn’t regress exactly, but she learned to have more fun and that not everything is about school or academics. The host club members helped her out of her shell and she’s now much more open to new experiences. That being said, she is still completely the same character. She has grown so much, but she’s not so drastically different that she’s unrecognizable. She is still crazy smart and driven but she sees the benefit of fun and silly activities. Haruhi is definitely not the flashiest character in this series, but she still manages to stand out from the crowd.
Tamaki Tamaki is a character that you can’t help but love. He is a massive idiot, but he’s an extremely well-meaning idiot who just wants everyone to be happy. He is the nicest, most genuine character I have ever come across. Even though he is a “host” he seems to genuinely care about every client he encounters. If there were more people like Tamaki in the world it would be a much nicer place.
Tamaki’s life hasn’t been easy and it’s admirable that he’s still so sunny. The last few volumes have been quite dramatic and Tamaki was pretty angsty, so I am super happy that he’s pretty much back to normal. I thought it was so funny that Tamaki has matured so much since volume 1 but he’s as lovable as ever and has shown much more depth than I ever imagined he would.
Kyoya Kyoya is definitely one of my favorite hosts. I don’t know why, but I love him so much! He’s also a super interesting character to analyze since he hides so much under the surface. He tries to come off as cold and unfeeling, but the more you learn about him the more you learn that’s not true. He is calculating and colder than the average person, but he cares so much about his friends. In this volume he says he acknowledges Haruhi’s worth as a person. While that may not sound like much, for Kyoya it is. I’m glad the author decided to show that Kyoya cares about Haruhi as much as the other host club members even if he doesn’t show it well. Kyoya may pretend that he’s just friends with the host club members for power and status, but everyone knows it’s a lie.
But honestly, who would be able to show affection openly if they had grown up with the Ootori family. I know I talk about the Ootori family a lot, but that’s because they are so messed up. Fuyumi, Kyoya’s sister, literally got scolded for coming home to visit, and Mr. Ootori literally thinks of his sons as pawns. I honestly don’t know if there is any love within the family, aside from Fuyumi.
On a bit of a happier note, I definitely relate the morning Kyoya. I too am a complete demon when people try to wake me up in the morning 😂. Also, I low key ship Kyoya and I feel like they would work really well together and she’s one of the only characters that are able to meet Kyoya in terms of wit and calculated-ness.
Hikaru The first time I read Ouran, I wasn’t a fan of Hikaru. I thought he was rude and mean-spirited and overall just didn’t like him. Over the past few readings, he has really grown on me. Hikaru is someone that has absolutely no idea how to deal with any feelings. His default emotion is anger or apathy, and this leads to a lot of troubles for him. Fortunately he grows out of this during the series.
From the glimpses of the future we got to see and in the extra episodes, he turns out fine which I’m very happy about. Out of all the characters in the series I’d say that Hikaru and Kaoru grew the most. They were so immature and codependent and we got to see them grow so much! The twins are still very close and market the “brotherly love” aspect of their host club personalities, but they are much more independent than they used to be and, as shown in the glimpses of the future, I don’t understand how I used to dislike Hikaru. He’s definitely not my favorite host club member, but I love him all the same.
Kaoru To be perfectly honestly, I prefer Kaoru over Hikaru. While he can be just as vicious as his twin, he seems to be the sweeter one. He figured out his feelings much sooner than Hikaru did and made the conscious decision to ignore them because his twin’s happiness was more important to him than any romantic relationship. What a sweetheart! I love him so much <3
One of the saddest parts of Hikaru and Kaoru’s story is that some of their personality...quirks could have been avoided. So many of their issues stem from believing that no one can tell the apart and that their identities are permanently entwined, but it was revealed a few volumes ago that their mother could tell them apart but just wanted to tease them. I know she means well, but this created a massive identity crisis for the twins! I’m glad that they are working it all out and are interacting with their classmates more. I think that if Kaoru hadn’t pushed Hikaru to confront his feelings their development would have plateaued. If Kaoru hadn’t been slightly more emotionally intelligent than Hikaru who knows how long it would have been before they opened up to everyone.
Hunny Much like Hikaru, I wasn’t a huge fan of Hunny the first time I read the series. I don’t know why though! I now absolutely love him. He’s in my top 3 host club characters.
One of the things I love best about Hunny is how misleading his character is. At first glance he seems like a 6-year old that’s been plopped in high school but, much like practically every other character in the series, looks can be deceiving. Hunny is very intelligent and manipulative! His cutesy facade is masterfully crafted and as we saw in later volumes, he is very aware of other people’s feelings and gives great advice. There were hints of his true nature throughout the series, but it’s basically confirmed in his glimpse into the future when he dupes Reiko into proposing. (Btw, I don’t think Hunny is malicious or mean, just more calculating than his appearance would suggest.)
Speaking of Hunny and Reiko, I want to mention one more time just how much I love them together. They are beyond cute and they bring out the best in each other. Despite their outwards appearance, they are surprisingly similar and complement each other.
Mori To be honest, I don’t have much to say about Mori. I don’t dislike his character and I think he does add to the series, but I don’t have any real thoughts to put down. He has some hardcore fangirls but I must say...I don’t get it.
Mei Yes, I know that Mei isn’t a host, but I love her so much that I had to mention her in my final review. She was really the catalyst of many major developments, namely Haruhi realizing that she was in love with Tamaki. Like many Ouran characters, she starts off rather unlikable but soon shows that there is more under the surface.
Okay, this review is now officially too long. I need to stop...at least until I re-read the series again!
Rankings of my favorite host-club members (though I love them all!): 1. Kyoya 2. Tamaki 3. Hunny 4. Kaoru 5. Hikaru 6. Mori
Re-read 18/7/17 I still love this series, even after reading it 3 times. It always brings a smile to my face and gives me all the feels. It still amazes me how much I love the characters. When I first started the series I would have never though the characters would become so fleshed out.
I loved how this volume contains "peaks at the futures" of the host club members, as well as various supporting characters. My favourite future was Hunny's! I love him and Reiko <3
My favourite episode in this volume was the bonus episode in Spain. I loved the other episodes, but the bonus episode focused on Kyoya, and I'm complete trash for anything about him. It also had a nice friendship scene between him and Tamaki, so of course I loved it.
I wish there were more volumes to this series, but I think this was a perfect finale.
Original Review It's...over.
I AM SO SAD THAT THIS SERIES IS OVER!!!!
OHSHC was the first Anime I'd ever watched and the first manga I'd ever read. When I first read/watched it, I thought it was super weird. I never thought that I would love the characters as much as I do now.
Every single character has so much depth and just feel so real! I think the characters in this series had more character development than in any other series I have ever read. (And the includes Harry Potter and Percy Jackson!)
Volume 18 had the best ending possible. It was sad, and it was happy, and it was just...perfect! <3 And I especially enjoyed the bonus chapters at the end of the book.
I can't properly describe how amazing this series is or how much you should read this. I just love it so much! Even just thinking about it makes me want to smile :)
Just read the series. I swear, you won't regret it.
So its the end. I had tears (VERY LITTLE) in my eyes when I saw the last chapter. The ending wasnt very the kind of completely ennnnndddddddd ending. The story seems to continue in all readers mind but with many different plot. It seems af if its still alive. It amazing how the characters change through the series especially the twins. They got really mature at the end. Tamaki is just... as... *insert whatever word you want* as ever. And the story seem more realistic as the characters do graduate!!
The amazing conclusion to the Ouran High School Host Club series.
Haruhi and Tamaki have finally confessed to each other and now must explore the world of dating. The rest of the club is determined to do their best to keep Tamaki from doing something extremely foolish and getting himself dumped.
It's always so bitter-sweet when you finish a series you love. This is no different. I loved this series so very much and I will definitely be reading it again sometime. But it's still sad to know it's over now. It was a good ending though. Everything was wrapped up really nicely and we even got glimpses into the future, showing us possible futures for all the loved characters that came about in the book.
I can't say I'm happy that Haruhi ended up with Tamaki. I'm not surprised, it was obvious who she was going to fall for, but still. Between Tamaki and Hikaru, I would have picked Hikaru. And if I had a choice between anyone in the host club, I would have picked Kyoya. I know, I don't really get it either, and I think he's slightly evil, but I have a thing for the bad boy complex. You think I'd be over it at age 35, but no, apparently not. lol
I would recommend this book for 12+ I can't think of any content warnings at all. It's pretty much a feel-good story all around.
I honestly can’t believe this series has come to an end! I thought this volume was the perfect balance of new plot and nostalgia. My favorite parts were the little “Where are they now?” (or something like that) segments where she went over where each club member is in the future. Hunny’s made me laugh especially.
This volume did take a turn I didn’t expect. I mean… I should’ve expected it based on the big personalities all of the Host Club members have… but I still wasn’t expecting it. Haha
I’m satisfied with Tamaki and Haruhi’s relationship. They didn’t become instantly lovey-dovey or change their personalities once they became an item. I really liked where their story arc went.
In a weird twist of events (not really because I love these two characters) my ultimate favorite part was the relationship between Kasanoda and Mei!!!! They are adorable!!!!
All in all—this series is worth the read. The characters and comedy are a fantastic addition to any day—especially the hard ones.
while there r some problematic themes, i do understand why, in spite of that, a lot of people still enjoyed it. i really liked the found family aspect (it was my fav thing) and the way they helped others
Amazing story, amazing characters. I love all my boys and girl, the romance was so adorable and the friendship is everything I need to smile, the last moments of the last chapter had me grinning and happy crying. It was the perfect conclusion.
Today is a special day for me. I started watching Ouran last year when I decided that I wanted to go to Japan, I got this box set as my birthday present almost a year ago and I started reading this before leaving to my semester abroad. I came back and continued reading, always feeling nostalgic whenever a place, food or thing I experienced in Japan was mentioned and that extra episode of Spain made me miss my dear friends so much. I grew a lot while reading this series and that’s just another reason why it is so special and dear to me. It’s the end of an era. さよならOuran。
Wow, when was the last time I’ve finished a book and gotten the chance to sit down with a good cup of tea and write a review about it? *thinks about it* *PAGE NOT FOUND* I’ve never been one to write a ‘professional’ book review as it too often results to become more of a personal reflection and rant. Today is no exception I think I can speak on behalf of the goodreads community here, I’ve been in a disgusting reading slump for the past 10 months now. Prior these two weeks, I’ve been shamelessly picking up books and forcing myself to read it- what I like to define as ‘book whoring’. Picking up this series hasn’t completely cured it for me, but it definitely has been a wonderful escape for 2 weeks. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy and laughed so much. I started Ouran High School Host Club in 2008 back when I was a huge otaku fan. I thought I finished it back then but when I found out there was more, there was absolutely no self-control. One book straight after another, the obsession really was unhealthy. It scares me how much work I’ve neglected for a moment of sanctuary AHAHAHAHHA For the past 2 weeks, the entire cast of this series have slowly become a part of my family. I loved every member of the Ouran Host Club and could not ask for a better group. Mori and Hunni were the ultimate dream team- to have an understanding and long friendship like theirs is truly a rare thing. The twins tore my heart in pieces, especially in the latter volumes when the plot was playing out. Kyoya with his sharp and calculating mind- always 50 steps ahead, I found his character and motives so fascinating. Haruhi with her modesty and integrity- she was perfectly happy with herself and knew exactly what she wanted- a rare thing to find in protagonists. And Tamaki. My Ultimate King idiot. I’ve never been so attracted to someone so emotionally stupid and rational as him. I’m grinning about it just thinking about him now. Finishing this book, I could not ask for a better conclusion. The ending for the characters here was so fitting and it really was the best way to say goodbye to them all. It left enough space in the reader's mind to make up their own possibilities for the future to keep the story ALIVE and enough to keep them comfortable and satisfied. I was really surprised how calm Tamaki reacted when Haruhi said she was going to study abroad. I thought that perhaps after 18 volumes has Tamaki really learnt how to mature and become independent? But this CERTAINLY was not the case when we later found out that arranged to move in with her. And I was like OFCOURSE. HE’S SUCH AN IDIOT HOW DID I NOT FORESEE THIS?!? And where the rest of the group came as well, I contemplated how nice it would be to be rich. I’ve really enjoyed myself these past 2 weeks and I have no doubt that I’ll be coming back to this series again in the near future.
^^^The perfect representation of the 3 stages you undergo reading a volume^^
I think that August will be a promising month with all all the great new book releasing. I can't wait to get my hands on them. AND QUEEN OF SHADOWS IS COMING OUT IN LESS THAN A MONTH???!??!!? WHATT?!
I cannot believe I'm about to type this but: THIS WAS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN "DEATH NOTE". Oh God...
What really drew me to reading the Manga was the beautiful art. Bisco Hatori has become my favourite manga artist. Her attention to background detail is amazing. I find many artists just focus on the characters and seem to forget about the scenery around said characters. You could really tell she cared about detail.
Now for the story! Despite being a "romantic comedy", this manga touched every emotion. I was surprised how sad and emotional it got at times. The story started pretty "fluffy" but when we started to learn of the characters back stories, especially Tamaki's and the Twins', it really pulled at your heart strings. The comedy was spot on. Many times I literally laughed out loud. It was funny when it needed to be and serious when it needed to be. This manga really took you for a ride!
I also got way too into Haruhi's romantic/personal tension with Tamaki And later of course with . I call it the Ouran Love Square :D Very swoon worthy! haha. I was always but I also loved and felt sooo bad for !
The only gripe I had about the series was concerning Tamaki and his grandmother. To me, his grandmother pretty much made his life hell. I really wish he But maybe I'm just bitter in that sense.I was actually surprised that all the characters were saying that Tamaki's situation with his family ended a little too for my tastes. But anyways...
The theme and character development was absolutely superb. The Twins' especially. Their journey of self discovery and struggling with independence/individualism was heart breaking but also refreshing and fulfilling. And they way Haruhi went from apathetic and non-engaging to blossoming to a well rounded person? So amazing.
And can we talk about that ending! GAH! So perfect! I just felt like it was the only possible way to end the series. I read the last chapter and the last bonus chapter like 3 times each. I felt so satisfied! This manga is absolutely amazing and I whole heartily recommend it to ANYONE, manga lovers and non-manga lovers alike! 5 stars!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I'm always sad when the last volume in a series rolls around, especially when it's one I have been reading for 7 years. I'm especially sad to see the end of this series, though, because it's become one of my favorites. Each of the characters has gone through a remarkable emotional transformation over the years, and yet still retain their core essence of irreverent joy.
Much of the romantic tension was resolved in the previous volume, so this one was left with wrapping up the practicalities of how Haruhi and Tamaki actually function as a couple. As expected, there is some awkwardness, overthinking, and ridiculous planning, but in the end, these two truly love each other, and have a great group of friends who support them in their love.
The eventually reveal of Haruhi as a girl to the rest of Ouran was definitely entertaining. I was expecting them to reveal her as a girl, and for the girls to accept her as she is. What I did not expect, however, was for them to accept her as a gay pretty boy who looks best as a cross dresser. LOL. The REAL reveal, then, at the airport, when Haruhi's dad (the real crossdresser) called her his daughter, was extra hilarious.
Haruhi's decision to study abroad was not surprising, nor was Tamaki's decision to go with her, no matter where she goes. I will admit to being surprised when the rest of the gang showed up, but deep down, it makes me happy to think of them together, wherever they are and whatever they're doing.
I loved the little stories and sketches throughout the end of the book showing where each character ends up, and the extra story, focusing on Kyoya, was really interesting. Even though they don't show it, I'm sure he will end up with someone like "Carmen" one day, a woman who he can butt heads with on an equal playing field, but eventually help, support, and love.
I'll miss these friends I've made, but it's been a good ride. If any of my friends out there is looking for a good manga series to read, look no further.
Let me start out by saying that i will be writing one review for this manga. At first i had watched the anime that was adapted from this manga and i fell in love with the characters. It is a funny, cheesy kinda gender-bender romantic plot.
Compared to the anime, the manga had far more details and other stories involved. Ok enough with the anime.
As i mentioned before the plot is a comedy, cheesy romantic, gender-bender... Haruhi is a scholarship student at an exclusive rich high school called Ouran High School. While trying to find a quiet classroom to study in she happens to open the doors to the music room, where she was presented with the appearance of 6 handsome male students that used the room for their club Ouran High School Host Club.
Because of her appearance at the time(her father's baggy shirt, big nerdy glasses and a short messy hair style) they thought she was a boy. So as they started teasing her of being gay, during her escape she smashed a very pricey vase. Due to this accident to pay off her debt she had to become the club's dog(to do the chores).
The president soon sees her without glasses and with a few changes to her hair and wardrobe she is quickly added to the host club members. In the first volume they find out that she really is a girl but they decided not to tell anyone because she wanted to work off her debt.
Her being a girl changes the way the club members act around her. They go through a lot of adventures trying to conceal the truth about her sex, protecting her.. Some of the members fall in love with her, but that's for you readers to find out...
I have to say that through this manga you can see the difference in social status of a rich person and a poor person. What difficulties and hardships they have to overcome.
A silly, fun way to end the series and overall I did end up coming around on the manga. I think the earlier bits are the weakest parts of the series but as it comes into its own the characters are fun and the romance is actually pretty good!
I just love this series so much. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Some of my favorite characters come from this series. Cute, heartfelt story, with great comedy.
I've been binge-reading this to the point that I had several dreams about the characters and the Music Room 3 lol. So... it's sad to finally reach the end. At the same time, I'm just glad that I picked this manga, it was so good, better than I expected. I thought I was going for a silly and funny manga, but it got serious, dramatic, and emotional and made me 'feel things'. The characters were so well developed throughout the series and every member of the Host Club had personal growth and their own time to shine. I'm really impressed by this work that made me laugh, cry, and feel warm sometimes. It became a favourite *-*
A cute and adorable romance with whacky shenanigans and heart warming moments~ Ouran was the first ever romance anime i watched and romance manga i read... this was probably my 6-7th time reading it but it still makes me feel happy and fluffy~
This manga AND the anime will always be my comfort universe to disappear in when things are overwhelming and hard~💜
Deze serie was fantastisch. De manga gaat zo veel verder dan de anime. Ik ben echt heel blij dat ik het heb gelezen, maar ook sad dat ik het nooit meer voor de eerste keer kan lezen.
~4.5/5 (although the series is a solid 5) [Also available at my blog.]
I love this series, you guys. Just thinking about it makes me happy and re-reading it gets me all excited again and, while this wasn’t quite what I thought it’d be, it was still awesome. And I seriously wonder if Hatori can do something that I don’t love. And I want her to do more and for it to get published over here so I can read it.
This was the last volume of Ouran, which makes me so sad, because that means there’s no more of these characters to come, and I’m going to miss them so much. This was a very good ending, though.
God, just looking through this volume again as I write this makes me smile all over again.
The volume starts with the love confession between Haruhi and Tamaki, which is so completely awesome. It’s hilarious and they’re yelling at each other and they kiss and it’s so cute. The best confession ever and I don’t know how it could have been any better.
Some things get worked out between Tamaki’s father and grandmother, and Haruhi goes to talk to Kosaka. Haruhi wants to do something with Tamaki but is pretty content having just confessed to him, while he is freaking out and trying to think up the perfect date. There’s some commotion about that before they go on the date, which is over the top for Haruhi, but the gang is following them to make sure nothing goes wrong. And they end up going to Haruhi’s mothers’ grave, which is sweet.
And then we find out the big news, something that I didn’t think much about because I thought Haruhi would decide she cared too much about everyone and couldn’t possibly leave them to go away to school and there would be a big cheesy moment about it: instead, Haruhi has decided to go to school in America, as paid for by the school. There’s some trouble with this and Haruhi’s father is upset about it and the host club throws a party and do a thing for everyone at school to find out that she’s actually a she (which is particularly entertaining because they all say they knew, only to later find out that they meant they thought they knew Haruhi was a girly, maybe gay, boy). There are some very good moments between everyone. during this.
And then Tamaki tells her that he’s going with her, and he’s going to be living in the apartment right next to hers. And then everyone else moves into the apartments surrounding theirs. I wasn’t expecting this, and at first thought it was a bit too much, too cheesy, but after a while I’ve warmed up to the idea and just kind of love it. Particularly having Haruhi and Tamaki living right next to each other, with a door leading to the others’ place. I like the thought of them right next to each other, bickering and teasing and just so cute. Like a newly living together couple or newlyweds. Pretty much, I just love them. Also, I'd never noticed their height differences. But Tamaki is practically all legs in comparison to Haruhi, which is just adorable. They are just adorable and I love them.
After that, there a couple extras. There’s one long chapter featuring the group going to Spain because Kyoya’s father has set up his brother with some woman, and they end up helping her. This was mostly okay, although a bit entertaining a points, particularly at the end when Haruhi gets Tamaki all flustered. Then there’s a tiny chapter starring Haruhi and Tamaki and a cuddle session which is just so adorable.
Throughout the volume, there are also several quarter or full page panels of the characters in the future, with what the author thinks might happen to them. She says that it’s not official, but I enjoyed them all nonetheless.
I’m so sad that it’s all over now; there’s no more Ouran for me to wait for or fangirl over. Although, since I do own them all, I can re-read them as many times as I want, which I’m sure will happen. While this volume, and several before it, never got a five star rating, the series as a whole gets one, in my mind. It’s one of my favorite manga, or story in general, if not the one at the top of the list, which is very high praise coming from me. But I just love this series so much, as I've stated before. And now I have to console myself because of the fact that it's all over now.
