This is a really interesting book. It looks at the difference between the ways writers wrote about wives, and how they treated their own wives. It looks at wives of famous men, wives who were famous themselves; wives in the UK and wives in New England. (Maybe others... I'm writing this a lot later). It also looks at wives in Victorian fiction. Quite a hotchpotch, but it worked for me.
