This publication combines the talents of two artists, from different continents and cultural contexts, who express their personal encounter with the words of the Psalms. Using vibrant acrylics on Plexiglas, the Dutch artist Anneke Kaai applies paintbrush and collage techniques to give 'body' to her experience of the Psalms, and the verses that inspired her paintings appear alongside, taken from The Message by Eugene H. Peterson. Peterson's paraphrase is a moving expression of the cutting reality of the ancient Hebrew poetry.
Eugene H. Peterson was a pastor, scholar, author, and poet. For many years he was James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He also served as founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland. He had written over thirty books, including Gold Medallion Book Award winner The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language a contemporary translation of the Bible. After retiring from full-time teaching, Eugene and his wife Jan lived in the Big Sky Country of rural Montana. He died in October 2018.
The artwork in this book touched me like no art has. Kaai beautifully illustrates the psalms. Each painting contains a magnitude of symbolism and abstract beautiful. These helped me to understand and worship through the psalms on a deeper level.
