WIlliam Blake once said that there are Two Separate Ways of looking at the Gospel.
One is through the eyes of Innocence.
And the OTHER way, of course, is by being someone who’s been EXPERIENCED.
Blake sheds light on both these extremes in his Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. And those of us who are in each opposite camp, naturally enough, see Blake as a MADMAN.
That was Blake’s intention. He wanted to SACRIFICE himself for the Truth.
Yep.
Sound crazy? Monkey in the middle?
Well, I have ANOTHER crazy idea for you...
To see such things you must travel, as the great Scottish poet Hugh McDiarmid sang, “Beyond Desire....” For then, and only then, will you witness firsthand the life-changing and unforgettable “Hand of Fire.”
As Paul, on the road to Damascus...
St Paul’s famous unnamed infirmity was the same thing. No kidding. Else, guys, why would the apostle Luke describe Paul as being lowered from the Gates of Damascus in a Basket? A Euphemism?
No way.
Cause you know and I know that Paul after his conversion was a BASKET case.
Be honest with yourself. And Blake’s EXPERIENCED readers ALL get that as a matter of course.
Why not?
ALL experienced readers are NOT Vamps. But all INNOCENT readers are not really so innocent. Life is one very sharp double-edged sword.
Confused? Well, so was St Paul. THAT’s why he was a Basket Case at Damascus. Know what else? ALL folks who’ve really been converted are basket cases. But they hide it most of the time.
They’re chameleons.
Now even I’m confused... but that’s where Blake, Paul and Eugene Peterson are working TOGETHER. To get us lost. You see... if we’re not lost, OR if we resist getting lost, we’re missing their point -
Forgiveness and Open-Mindedness go HAND IN HAND.
Cause if we have both, not only do we not CONDEMN anyone, but we don’t CONDEMN ourselves. We’re on the perpetual hot seat now. We can’t judge ANYONE.
Don’t believe it? How ELSE are we going to FIND ourselves if we don’t LOSE ourselves?
We’re not KIDS anymore, so we swim in the DEEP END! Right, guys?
By the way, the book I’ve read here is Paul’s infamous Letter to the Romans, put into 21st century street talk by Eugene Peterson.
So - listen up - next time you find yourself floundering in the deep end...
