Traveling on a train on her way to the Oregon Territory, innocent Faith Tomkins encounters Jonas Winslow, a man framed for a murder he did not commit, and the two risk their lives for an improbable love. Original.

I yield at 39%. Very slow paced and unlikeable characters. Also driving me nuts is the ease of traveling from one farm to the other in just around the corner warp speed, instead of the days it would likely have taken. Moving on.
Technically this is set in the western part of the country. Technically there is a fire. Otherwise this book does not live up to the title. Jonas Winslow is supposed to be some worldly gambler but to me he came off as a doofus who falls headfirst into the tar pits of life. From being accused of murder to getting shanghied off the streets and being talked into becoming a farmer when he has no idea what he's doing, Jonas is in constant need of a babysitter. The most interesting part of the story didn't really involve him at all. Faith Tompkins is a slightly better character who isn't afraid to throw punches when the situation calls for it.
I loved Jonas! He seemed the perfect man for Faith. I did get angry with that MacQuarrie woman and her interfering but it added to the story. I also enjoyed learning about Oregon and homesteading. The author did a great job of mixing history and the love story. I would definitely recommend this book.
