In a world where wizards and sorcerers do not get along due to differences in their magic, the sorcerer, Aaron is hired to guard the wizard, Myleana. However, the attraction between them once locked in an unusual lab under his own wall of protection ignites in otherworldly ways. When they come under attack and all they believed in becomes questionable, will these two remain separated by their world's prejudices? Will the lies, betrayals and opinions of even their own families stand in the way of the alchemy of sex, especially when sorcery and wizardry come into play?
Ever since she was young, Kiki Howell has loved to listen to a well-woven tale with real characters, inspired plots, and delightful resolutions. Kiki could spend hours lost in a book, and soon she knew that creating lives, loves, and losses with just words had to be the greatest thing that she could do. To that end, she pursued her study of literature and writing, earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Kent State University. “After a long break having my boys, I finally just had to write again. And, as soon as I gave the stories the space, they entered it. It’s both awesome and humbling to find the words in my mind become characters on a page and create their lives.” Kiki is a multi-published author residing in Northeast Ohio with her incredibly handsome and talented, singer/songwriter husband and two children.
I’ve always been a champion for the underdogs. So, I guess it's not surprise that I married a man who now teaches a class he created called, Crossroads – a class designed to help students understands differences in others, specifically differences of race, religion and sexual orientation. Therefore, in my house, we discuss injustices and prejudices such as racism, weightism, etc. a lot. The idea of stereotypes gets under my skin, and I have a real problem with uninformed people who would rather remain ignorant and judge others than to learn about or exercise an ounce of compassion toward a fellow human being who doesn’t look, think or act as they do. I mean *sighs* can’t we all just get along?
Ideals and feelings often make brief appearances in my writing, but in this novel, the plot idea gave them more of a showing. From online research, I came up with a combined paranormal/fantasy world where sorcerer’s and wizards didn’t get along due to the differences in their magic.
In a world like this, I was able to show the evolution of a hero and heroine, ones who could, when forced to work together, try to find a way to overcome their stereotypes to make way for attraction. Although, as we know from said real world, the romance of such individuals is not easy when family and friends, their prejudices, continue to get in the way. My own thoughts were easier to spout off given my main characters were all paranormal :) No, the story isn’t all doom and gloom or even preaching, but a lot of action and magic, sexual tension and family quarrels, spells and even sexual magick – the real world just seeps through in a couple of poignant lines. *giggles* Was bound to happen, right?
Love is the spell cast as Aaron, a Sorcerer and Myleana, a Wizard, are thrown together in an underground lab. Myleana, hired to open a magically protected box, and Aaron, hired to guard Myleana, fight to resist each others charms until they can't hold back any longer. As their romance heats up so does their job as they magical box opens when Aaron gets near.
Aarons past and future rests on this box, that is, if he and Myleana can survive long enough.
Irreconcilable Differences by Kiki Howell was a DNF for me, something that I feel really bad about especially considering that this is something that I requested to read, not to mention participate with in a blog tour. But, the more I tried I just couldn't get in to this story.
First, the world building and descriptions were very jumbled to me. I couldn't get a sense of the atmosphere or the locale and the actions just seemed a bit confused. It was almost like Howell could see what was happening in her mind, but it just didn't come across in the writing quite right. This is usually something I'm able to overlook because sometimes novels just start off a little rocky as authors introduce their characters and their world and instead I focus on the characters themselves.
In this case, however, that only led to more of a disconnection for me as I couldn't even get a read on the personalities of the characters. In truth, I even found myself not really liking them. From their first meeting they're a little antagonistic, not something that usually throw me off, but in this case it was underwritten with an immediate sense of lust. Again, not something the usually dissuades me. But, in this case, it just felt completely wrong and contrived instead of organic, natural.
And after a few chapters I just couldn't do it. I could not pull myself in to this world. Admittedly, it could have gotten better and I am fully able to say that I might not have given this novel a fair chance for whatever reason. Maybe it was just one of those times where I wasn't in the mood for this particular type of novel or relationship. I don't know. And in the name of being fair there have been some decent reviews, so again, maybe this was just me.
Aaron is a drifter. Kicked out by the age of fifteen for inheriting his father's powers, he's left to fend for himself and learn how to use his new found scorcery on his own. He's now a magical bodyguard and has been stationed to protect Myleana and the special box and grimoire she's working on, but what he doesn't expect is a set up, new found family ties, and to fall in love with a wizard.
Scorcerer's and Wizards are enemies yet there is a spark between Aaron and Myleana right from first sight that is too powerful to ignore. As they fight to be together and try to overcome the age old prejudice of their differences, they go through an amazing journey were love prevails.
I loved this read, and was shocked at how well I could relate to her hero Aaron's hardships. He struck a cord with me, and I loved that he finally got his happy ending no matter how untraditional. Once they stopped fighting it, the chemistry between Myleana and Aaron was amazing, with an added bonus of some scorching sex scenes in between. This book is a great read!
