Literary career of English novelist and playwright John Galsworthy, who used John Sinjohn as a pseudonym, spanned the Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian eras.

In addition to his prolific literary status, Galsworthy was also a renowned social activist. He was an outspoken advocate for the women's suffrage movement, prison reform and animal rights. Galsworthy was the president of PEN, an organization that sought to promote international cooperation through literature.

John Galsworthy was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1932 "for his distinguished art of narration which takes its highest form in The Forsyte Saga."

Episcopul de Porthminster se stingea văzând cu ochii: trimiseseră după cei patru nepoţi ai săi, după cele două nepoate, precum şi după soţul singurei dintre ele care era măritată. Nu credeau că o să mai apuce zorii.

Cel care prin 1860 fusese Cherrell (căci aşa se pronunţă numele Charwell) „Scrobitul” pentru colegii de la Harrow şi de la Cambridge, apoi reverendul Cuthbert Cherrell pentru cele două parohii londoneze ale sale, canonicul Cherrell pe când oficia ca predicator în plină glorie şi Cuthbert, episcop de Porthminster în ultimii optsprezece ani, nu fusese niciodată căsătorit. Din cei optzeci şi doi de ani cât trăise, vreme de cincizeci şi cinci ― deoarece fusese hirotonisit destul de târziu ― îl reprezentase pe Dumnezeu pe anumite porţiuni ale pământului. Acest fapt, precum şi controlul asupra instinctelor fireşti pe care-l exercita de la vârsta de douăzeci şi şase de ani, conferiseră chipului său o demnitate reţinută, pe care vecinătatea morţii nu o tulburase.
