Not much of a sleepover.

The girls are staying at a cabin (that sounds filthy) with Kate's family and partake in a mild ghost story and get annoyed by the neighbor boys next door.

The usual sleepover food they make is replaced with items they find at the cabin: sloppy joes with canned chili, shrimp cocktail and smoked cheese on crackers, and biscuits made from a mix and stuffed with jam.

Kate’s Camp Out
Plot: Kate and her family take a vacation to Camp Spirit Lake, and she brings along Lauren, Patti, and Stephanie. Even though the houses surrounding them are all stunning, they get the one with that’s falling apart with no electricity. Kate’s Dad tells them a ghost story about two neighbors. One of them was rich, and the other was jealous so he drowned him in a canoe and took his gold. And its said a silver canoe can be seen on the lake of ghost of the man coming back to find his hidden gold. Kate’s Dad’s friend has two son’s that are pains and like to prank. They get Lauren and Patti so they all decide to get even after they even get Stephanie-the queen of not falling for pranks. During the dinner at their Dad’s friend’s house he shares a book with them about ghosts that occupy the area. After almost making Stephanie and Lauren eat worm sandwiches the Sleepover Friends have had enough, and head home. It’s then that, Patti discovers some coins behind a secret place in the fireplace and so they decide to have a séance to see how the money belongs too. But they discover something else. Thinking they’re being answered by the spirit when he responds, they realize it’s just the Norwood boys up to their tricks again. So, they rush out to get them, only to find a robbery in process. To find out who it well you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

My Thoughts: (Shaking my head). When author’s write books like this, (in series) do they forget what they wrote in books before it, or do they just run out of inspiration and think we won’t notice recycled plots. This is the SAME plot in Super Beach Mystery. Even tho this one *did* come first. Same scenario. They get stuck on a vacation at a old broken down house. Only this time it’s Kate’s family and not Patti’s. The house has a connection with ghosts. All the people around the house are very superstitious. Then there’s someone in the area stealing furniture in a truck. So could the area really be haunted? This was mediocre. I knew by the title it would be so no surprise there. Only I thought they’d be at a girl’s camp. Yet surprisingly I didn’t think it’d be Mr. Mooney. Although I did think it was odd for a electrician to 1) be so unprofessional he’d actually tell them “Well I fixed it now but it’ll probably go out again.” Then I probably won’t call you again neither. 2 To say something about ghosts. But I admit if you’re gonna get away with a robbery , having the cover as an electrician is a really good cover. And now it’s making me think of the men who service my house and how much they’ve seen of it. And then I think of I was a spirit and I was summoned to discuss why I hide MY money I’d be pretty pissed. Like are you KIDDING ME? You summoned me not to FIND the money but tell you the reason. I’d probably make up some BS reason just to screw with them.

I don't really remember when I read all these early Sleepover Friends books, I don't recall reading them as a kid, so it might have been in my early 20s when I started collecting all these books - but here we are, another book that I didn't realize I had read.

But I am loving this reread. This is such a fun series, short and snappy books, and great nostalgia. I wish that 90s tween series book blogs were still a thing because I would totally do a Sleepover Friends one. (Even if there have been a couple started.)

Another one I actually remember from childhood. The girls head off for Spirit Lake for the weekend. Stephanie is a typical city kid worried about her beauty regimen and bugs but the other girls are up for adventure. There's a ghost rumored to be haunting the lake, two brothers looking to play pranks on the girls and a burglar breaking into empty cottages and stealing antiques. This was a quick fun read. I liked it and I remembered parts like signaling across the lake for their parents. I even learned the girls are 11. Much better than the last book in the series was.
