• Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension can easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet.
• Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.
• Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level.
High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year.
Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely.
Just received this book today... fascinating! According to the author, between 1972 and 1992 the entire country of Finland reduced heart attacks and strokes 60% nationwide, primarily by replacing table salt with a mixture of 57% sodium chloride, 28% potassium chloride, 12% magnesium sulphate and 2% lysine. During this time the average systolic blood pressure reduced by 10mm Hg and mortality from stroke reduced by 62% in men and 63% in women. So why doesn't every one, particularly every doctor in the US and UK know about this?
It wouldn't by any chance have anything to do with the fact that we have a multi-billion $/£ market in anti-hypertensive drugs, would it? No, that couldn't possibly be it...
For anybody living in a cave this book might provide some value. But as soon he said at the beginning that vegetarians should have little trouble with BP, I knew this book had little value. I've been vegan (and low fat - as the author recommends) for well over a decade ... with normal (perhaps slightly low) weight, but can only keep my BP managed by doing ALL of the following 3 things: 1) medication 2) exercise - lots 3) keeping weight low. ANY DEVIATION FROM THESE 3 THINGS -and sometimes even with them - the BP rises. (BTW, my cholesterol is low - under 140 - so cholesterol and BP are NOT RELATED; obvious, but many people are under the misconception that they are). I also mostly keep away from sugar & salt. And, yes, I get lots of potassium and magnesium via food (e.g. babanas, oranges, spinach, etc, etc). This book is, like so many other of this genre, repetitious and verbose to where you want to scream. The book could have been reduced by 90% (95%?). But, again, if you live in a cave, perhaps it's useful. Bottom line: probably dozens of reasons for high BP (many known, some unknown, each person different).
Hypertension is completely preventable without drugs. The vast majority of heart attacks and strokes could be eliminated simply by balancing dietary potassium and sodium. Most people consume too much sodium and too little potassium. Based on this principle, the entire country of Finland has reduced cardiovascular disease 60%. Read this book and save your life like I did. It really works.
Birthday present from my mother who after beginning dialysis started thinking about diet for the first time. The solution is maintaining a 4:1 ratio of potassium to sodium in your diet. It also gives a more detailed description of blood pressure drugs than I have seen before which makes this a useful reference. The charts of potassium and sodium content in various foods will come in handy.
My blood pressure used to be 180/100 until my doctor put me on medication. After following the principles in this book, my blood pressure came down so much my doctor took me off the meds! Today I'm averaging 118/73.
