Murder, Mystery, Intrigue...and a Three-legged Dog Named Moby?
"QUICK THRILLS" is author Jeff Menapace's compilation of his three shorts:
"Business is Business, James" - An abused wife is fed up and decides to have her husband killed. She has the money. She has the nerve. There's just one small problem...
"Fish and Biscuits in a Barrel" - A fish monger and his three-legged yellow Labrador do battle with a persistent alley cat in this bizarre comedic tale of suspense and deception.
"Five Card--DRAW!" - A game of poker. One hand. The winner is rich, the loser dead. Who will win? Husband or wife?
All three popular stories are together for the first time under one roof. "QUICK THRILLS" is the ideal companion for those five minutes you have to kill (pun most certainly intended) when your thirst for all things suspense, thriller, mystery, and murder needs to be quenched.
A native of the Philadelphia area, Jeff has published multiple works in both fiction and non-fiction. In 2011 he was the recipient of the Red Adept Reviews Indie Award for Horror.
In March of 2014, his novel BAD GAMES was a #1 Kindle bestseller and is now being optioned as a feature film.
Free time for Jeff is spent watching horror movies, The Three Stooges, and mixed martial arts. He loves steak and more steak, thinks the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the greatest movie ever, wants to pet a lion some day, and hates spiders.
Really loved that collection of three stories! It's about interpersonal relationsships (LOL) spoken in a matter of fact style and one is about a cat and dog involved in. My personal favourite is 'Fish And Biscuits In A Barrel'. The twist at the end is absolutely amazing. All three stories have a certain something above the average quality. Highly recommended!
Quick Thrills is a collection of three short stories by Jeff Menapace. I read the three stories in about an hour, and I was impressed with the author's writing. I purchased Quick Thrills because I've read "Sugar Daddy," another story by the author, and one of the most original--and chilling--stories I've read in a long time. In my opinion, Quick Thrills did not quite measure up to the mark set by Sugar Daddy, but it was close.
I loved the O'Henry-esque twist to each of the stories. Here's my quick take on the stories without giving any spoilers.
"Business is Business, James" - Jen Murphy learned the hard way that if you're going to hire someone to kill your spouse, cash in advance may not be the smartest way to pay.
"Fish and Biscuits in a Barrel" - Did you really believe that stuff about dogs being a man's best friend? You may want to rethink that.
"Five Card--Draw!" - Perhaps playing one hand of Five Card Draw with your spouse isn't going to work out well when the stakes are so high.
I enjoyed the author's writing style: light and brief, with no wasted words, and he did a very nice job with the surprise twists to end each story.
I have long been a fan of Jeff Menapace and this short collection of three of his earlier works in no way dampened my enthusiasm! They were all well told and imaginative. Although they lacked some of the volume and complexity of his later works, they were still very good and creative. I particularly liked this story about a three legged dog and a cat who team up for some unexpected mischief which was ironic and darkly humorous!
I would recommend this book to anyone with just a little time to enjoy some very good stories. The entire thing can easily be read in a single sitting.
