(review untuk vol. 1-8 tamat)

4.5 Puan.

Ha.Ri.Ka.İdi.

Ne söyleyim? Türünde harika bir eserdi. Psikolojik-seinen olduğunu her cümlesiyle hissettiriyordu.

'ES : Eternal Sabbath' by Fuyumi Soryo was the first manga comic I ever got. I never got around to reading it. Today, finally, I did.

A nameless protagonist starts telling us the story. He is a young man. He tells us that he can get into other people's minds, manipulate and change their thoughts, make them think that he is one of their friends. But he doesn't do any harm. He is mostly indifferent to what is happening around. Sometimes he is curious. Very rarely, he intervenes in a situation to do something good. When he intervenes in a particular case, the affected person ends up in a hospital. As the case is strange it is investigated by the researchers in the medical university. Kujyou, who is a talented researcher is assigned this task. She discovers that our nameless narrator is involved in this. And she tracks him down. And sparks fly. You should read the book to find out what happens next.

'ES' was a breezy read. The pages just flew, and before I knew, I had reached the last page. The artwork was beautiful, especially the pages depicting dreams and people's minds and the feelings and desires inside them. The narrator and Kujyou were fascinating characters. There were some fascinating revelations in the end and there were also a few open ends which makes us want to read the next part.

Have you read 'ES'? What do you think about it?

I forgot how good "ES: Eternal Sabbath" opens. Fuyumi Soryo covers everything that needs to be established for the story. There is ES (aka Ryousuke for this volume) and Mine. He has the power to get into a person's mind and manipulate it. He's not really a bad guy and not really a good guy. He's ambiguous yet charismatic question mark. Then there is Mine, who works as a brain researcher. She's an oddball herself. He doesn't even notice her when their paths cross but she notices him. Being an oddball, she searches him out and her life won't be the same after that.

It has been a long time since I read this series. It was originally published in Japan starting in 2002 and then Del Rey brought it over in 2006. It is a series that is only available in manga as it never got an anime adaptation which is odd because it seems like it would be perfect for the Noitamina block. The pacing is great. The characters are ridiculously attractive. The plot is layered but still easy to follow and, most importantly, it would still work today. Maybe one day, it will get its adaptation. Until then, I'm re-reading. At 8 volumes, it is an easy commitment.

Full series review

TW: rape, child abuse, child neglect, mind control, humiliation.

ES: Eternal Sabbath presents a story about two individuals carrying the ES gene, granting its weather perfect immunity going as far as to give protection against cancer and other similar diseases. This gene also came with a byproduct which is psychic powers that not even researchers thought would be possible. But some events happen that lead to ES or Akiba Ryosuke, the protagonist and Isaac, the antagonist, getting free and trying to find the meaning of their existence. In this context, Fuyumi Soryo tries to explore the question of whether humans are inherently good or bad, whether it's their upbringing that corrupts them or not and what place love has in all of that.

I'd say the strengths of this manga lie in the art and the characters. The former is super detailed, with intricate backgrounds and realistically proportioned bodies which contribute greatly to the impression of realism in this story. I found the expressions nice as well, despite some people thinking they are very restricted. In my opinion, they come off as realistic and non-exaggerated like they usually do in mangas (which isn't a jab at them, different art styles exist for different purposes). With the way the camera is angled, it sometimes gave me the impression I was watching a TV show which I liked.

Secondly the characters are very realistic, even the side characters, in the way they express themselves and the struggles they go through such as mental health, image issues, identity crisis, neglect and abuse which are all relatable. I do find it a shame that Akiba, despite hinting at a similar struggle didn't get his fleshed out more than the side characters' did.

Isaac didn't get this treatment either. And for main characters to not have a more fleshed out inner struggle made the finale look pointless and rushed especially when Isaac had a lot to unpack. But I feel like the author was quick to paint him as an irredeemable villain which didn't make sense to me. I get that the author, in her exploration of the theme, that he was a helpless case but in doing so, she didn't give a chance to Mine and Akiba to even try to communicate with him, which goes against what they usually stood for. Even a failed attempt to communicate would have solved this problem.

Finally, I wished the main characters were a bit more active, especially Akiba. While Mine was indeed working on the Isaac case and trying to help Kimiko, Yuri and her mom, Akiba was out there just going to college and occasionally giving his opinion on Isaac and their powers instead of being fully active. He seemed to only come to action when Mine asked for his help or later in the story when he suddenly decides Isaac needs to be offed because he's too dangerous (did you not realize so earlier especially when so many murders happened?)

Overall, I still enjoyed the read despite some shortcomings. While ES: Eternal Sabbath itself lacked in some aspects, it piqued my curiosity about Fuyumi's other works like Mars which is more focused on romance and slice of life and probably more well known than ES. I believe with her style of storytelling she'll have a much easier time to pull it off without the supernatural and life-threatening elements in it.

PS: I found Mine's dress in her final battle absolutely cool!

Vol.1 review

ES: Eternal Sabbath is a science-fiction-ish story, set in modern day (or at least in the day when this manga was written) about genetically engineered humans with a superior gene that grants them psychic powers and a longer life span.

This first volume hooked me up pretty well. It opens up with our enigmatic character called ES who uses his psychic powers on people, usually not to cause harm but also for selfish reasons such as when he manipulates everyone into thinking he's their acquaintance when he isn't just to live freely in their house or to use a hotel room for free and manipulating the employees into thinking he paid when he actually didn't. But he also helps a bully victim along the way which makes you wonder if he's good or bad.

In contrast, Mine is a much more easy character to read, she's kind and curious and not one to let go a mystery when it falls into her hands which is why she gets intrigued by the ES case. Also I'm definitely biased, but her working in neuroscientific field makes me like her more, you go girl!

I love how the art style, while old, does a good work at delivering expressions. The lines are so clean and kept to a minimum in a way that still convey body language and movement well. I learned the author has experience in fashion which I think contributed quite a lot to the way the makes her art easily readable.

All in all it's a pretty solid volume and a good story opener.

Unrelated, but I am surprised this is the same author as Mars, which is a manga I couldn't really get into mainly due to the bad boy x studious girl trope but I might try it again after completing ES.

This was a great start to the series. The art when Akiba/ES/Shuro explores mindscapes is gorgeous and the manifestation of his powers is fascinating. At this point, I'm not sure who to trust but I'm excited to find out where this goes.

A mysterious person who can manipulate the minds of others seems to wander aimlessly, altering the thoughts and fates of those he encounters arbitrarily. But when he runs into one of the few people who he can't affect, something strange happens - he finds this person interesting...

I read Eternal Sabbath as part of a book challenge and didn't know much about it going in. I'm delighted to have found what seems to be a captivating, character driven paranormal story with heavy sci-fi and mystery elements. The two main characters are highly intriguing, and this first volume sets up a good amount of groundwork for future developments while keeping things moving at a nice clip. I can't describe the story in more detail without getting into spoilers, so I'll simply say I enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading more.

The art isn't spectacular nor elaborate, but is solid and suits the story. Characters are distinct, consistently drawn and easily identifiable, and the straightforward style lets the artist really make an impact when called for.

Overall ES Vol. 1 is a strong start to what looks to be a great series.

Edit 1/8/2015: Just as intriguing on subsequent reads, and there's some interesting foreshadowing I'm picking up on now that I know where the series is heading.

first off..
my thoughts on the book: art work is as per-usual very good, the story is very catchy, which I know to some people that's completely irrelevant, but usually when I am sitting here reading a manga it takes me not long to read, where as with this series so far its taken me half an hour.

synopsis of the story:
Ryousuke Akiba or Shuro, or ES (Eternal Sabbath) is a human who was genetically created in a hygenic's lab in order to study eternal youth.
Ryousuke will live to be at least two decades old, possessing strange mental powers, entering peoples minds, discovering their deepest darkest secrets, and ever rearrange a persons memories for survival instincts, getting people to act as though he were a friend or a family member, as he wanders the streets of Tokyo for reasons unknown only to him,
no one recognizes him until he meets a woman researcher Dr. Mine Kujyou, a
determined researcher who challenges everything she knows about science.

I bought and read this manga 20 years ago and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. I've been thinking about getting rid of it but figured I should reread before deciding! This is a fun opening volume with a very slow, mysterious build up, only revealing the actual premise in the final pages. I remember the story feeling mature to me as a teen, but now it mainly seems soapy and a little ridiculous. Still fun though!

Awal yg menarik. Seorang pemuda misterius dg kekuatan PSI.

What if mind control was real? What if what you see and remember could be altered at a whim? With very clean, almost sterile, art, the artist shows us the real world ramifications in a story that quickly becomes disturbing and deeply personal at the same time.
