Question: If you combined Lucille Ball with Inspector Clouseau, what would you get?

Answer: Imogene Duckworthy, amateur PI and main character of Kaye George's new mystery, CHOKE.

Immy is a delight--the 22-year-old unwed mother of 3-year-old Nancy Drew Duckworthy (Drew), she lives with her retired-librarian mother, Hortense, in Saltlick, Texas; slings hash at her Uncle Huey's cafe; and wants with all her heart to be a detective like her "dead sainted father."

When Immy up and quits her job (Huey wants her to work double shifts again), and then explains her sudden unemployment by telling Hortense that Huey pinched her bottom (well, he DID pinch the other waitress's bottom), Hortense heads to the cafe to give Huey what-for. Then Huey is murdered, the police take Hortense to the station, and Immy has her very first case. Guided by the Moron's Compleat PI Guidebook, she sets out to find the perp.

The Moron's Compleat PI Guidebook says nothing about staging a jailbreak, holing up in a Cowtail motel, or color-coding her list of suspects. But it does mention disguises, just what Immy needs to investigate on her home turf. An outfit that combines Buns of Foam with Boobs and Belly, however, leaves the amateur PI in need of the Jaws of Life, and the reader in stitches.

Kaye George's CHOKE is a different kind of mystery. In most detective novels, the reader watches the sleuth-protagonist work his way through chapter after chapter, picking up clues and discarding red herrings, until he finally comes up with the answer. In CHOKE, however, the reader picks up clues while watching the gullible, ultra-literal, but enthusiastic Immy charge through to the solution while remaining blissfully clueless.

With CHOKE, first-timer Kaye George has accomplished something special: an original mystery, an original Immy, and a novel that leaves readers laughing and wanting more.

CHOKE (An Imogene Duckworthy Mystery) by Kaye George…..

This was a fun book. It’s full of quirky characters and a few downright kooky ones. And the small Texas town of Saltlick even deserves character status itself.

If you like small town crime and tongue-in-cheek cozy mysteries, Imogene is the girl for you.

She quits her job as a waitress in her Uncle Hughie’s hash house to become a private detective—her lifelong dream. Her troubles begin when the local police chief adds her to his list of suspects after Hugh is found dead—strangled by a giant wad of half frozen smoked sausage. The suspects also include Imogene’s mother, one of the bus boys from Hugh’s Hash, the cook, the town floozy and her boyfriend, and his uncle Guido, a one-time Sicilian hit man.

You may want to come to terms with your suspension of disbelief for Imogene’s first adventure, but it’s all worthwhile. Immy gets her break in the world of PIs, she solves the murder, inherits the business and even helps solve an unrelated robbery and meth cooking operation. Immy emerges a heroine to the folks in Saltlick, Texas.

In addition to all the clever scenarios and snappy dialogue, this was nicely constructed with subtle clues scattered all over the pages. See if you can spot them and connect the dots before Immy and the Saltlick cops solve the crime. 5 stars.

As soon as I finished this book, I started reading the next. Imogene Duckworthy is one of the most entertaining and irresistible amateur sleuths I’ve ever come across, with her awkwardness, her persistence, and her susceptibility to male charms. She's not afraid to be herself and to pursue what matters deeply to her. She's a devoted mother to her little girl, a devoted daughter to her pompous but loving mother, and devoted to her goal of becoming a private investigator. Although she blunders remarkably along the way, those blunders make this book so much fun to read.
I did figure out who done it. I wanted to be wrong. The author did a great job of planting the red herrings and clues to possible suspects, and this particular suspect was, in a way, a sympathetic character. Highly recommended for humor and for small-town Texas local color.

OMG!!! I adore MC Immy! I'm only half way through and really resent having to go work, eat, sleep.
Here I thought I was the klutziest most scatterbrained human ever, and Immy takes away the prize.

Immy makes me smile as she bungles her way into success, I hope.

Even more Kaye George's beautifully twisted plot completely engages me. I don't live in Texas, but Kaye transports me to the tiny towns that comprise Immy's world.

I don't want to sound threatening, or anything. But this better not be the only Immy Duckworthy novel! Just saying.

Sometimes when I really enjoy a book, I drag out finishing. Not wanting to leave 'the world'. That happened with Choke. I save pleasure reading for bedtime, and realized with a jolt last night that I'd finished Choke and wasn't going back to Immy's world. RATS.

Everyone has a dream job that they really want. Some want to become lawyers, others doctors and one young girl wants nothing more than to become a Private Investigator. Immy has a goal not quit her job as a waitress, go back to school and learn about becoming a Private Eye and following her dreams. But, fate steps in and plays its own hand and what happens changes the course of her life and her mother’s too. When the Chief of Police comes to question her mother she decides it’s time to try out what she hopes will be her new PI skills that she hopes to learn from reading The Moron’s Compleat Guide to Becoming a PI in order words PI for Dummies. So, armed with her book and her notepad Imogene is going to investigate her Uncle Huey’s murder, which is why the Police Chief came to her door. It seems after she left the diner and quit her job there someone came in and killed her uncle by stuffing a bag of frozen sausages down his throat. Not that original but nonetheless quite effective.

Questioning the girl who works in the beauty parlor, getting her hair done and then finding one of the deputies Immy hopes to build her own case and find out who killed her Uncle and why her mother was taken in by the Chief to be questioned or maybe arrested. But, there is much more to this hilarious story. Imagine Immy as a PI working in a PI’s office. Then, Immy remembers what happened to her father and wonders what why her mother is still at the police station for so many hours. Finding out what happened to her uncle she more facts about the murder and the robbery that took place at the same time.

Taking her trusty Moron’s Compleat PI Guide, she goes off to the station to come up with a plan to get her mother out and solve the crime. A fast thinking Immy, one swift getaway and the two women are as she puts it on the lam. Just picturing the two of them running out of the station after setting of the fire alarm is hilarious. Referring to another book she learns about the use of disguises in order to escape the law. She and Hortense, her mother hold up in a motel, she sneaks back into their house gets some clothes has someone buy some stuff at a costume store and the rest well you won’t believe it. It you can picture this you will definitely crack more than just a smile and really fall in love with these two zany women as they try to prove Who Killed Uncle Huey using the two clues at hand. One is the sausage and the other a footprint of a cowboy boot which leads are prospective PI to list every male and even some females in town. Cowboy boots are the norm for those living there. So Who Killed Huey? Well Xenia the waitress quit the same day Immy did over her last pay check. Her boyfriend Frankie is angry since she lost control of her car and is in critical condition in the hospital. Clem works there but did he do it? The suspect list is short and the two main suspects are Immy and her mother according to the police. The rest remains to be seen as I continue my review of this very creative and funny novel Choke. I guess that’s what happened when they stuffed the sausage down poor Uncle Huey’s throat he did more than CHOKE!

The fun is still not over as Immy returns to the scene of the crime, calls in an anonymous tip, and gets someone hauled in and goes to visit another in the hospital. Fleeing again going back to the motel Immy after getting more provisions, reads the newspaper and forget that the chili is cooking and instead well you guessed it our girls started another fire and this time it was their motel. But, fret not out of every bad incident the police will find their own hot lining of meth being made in one of the rooms occupied by one her Immy’s so called friends. Poor Baxter just wanted to cook up some meth instead he got cooked. So, where are our two jailbirds now? You won’t believe where they escaped to or how. More clues need to be processed and more plans worked out, as our PI hopeful will not give up until she clears her mother’s name. So, why did Xenia return to the diner? Did she know Hugh was dead? What part does Frankie play and whom does he want Uncle Guido to whack? Just wait and see.

One fast paced novel that will keep the reader on his/her toes enjoying the action and waiting to find out what our Immy will come up with next. Clues that are scant, yet there. Determined to use her PI books to help solve the case before he big interview with the PI firm the following week, just what will keep these two out of the lockup?

The misunderstanding mount up. Immy starts her new job thinking she is going out on her first case but instead gets bogged down with typing invoices and paperwork which is definitely not in either one of her manuals. The suspect list includes Xenia, Clem, Hortense, Immy, Baxter and even Uncle Guido and Frankie. Who killed Uncle Huey and why you have to find out for yourself before you get tangle up in one of her wild plans or schemes? Just how she goes about figuring it out you won’t believe and I won’t tell you. Let’s just say her PI skills are not too bad for a beginner and maybe the police department needs to hire her to replace their desk person Tabitha. Filled with manic, mayhem and much more Imogene Duckworthy is a force to be reckoned with and takes on life by a storm. With a mother who uses vocabulary that stumps her and needs to be defined, a little girl named Drew who is totally precious and adorable our Immy is one great gal whose persistence, drive and wild ideas just might get her killed or maybe a PI’s license. Does Xenia ever wake up from her coma? What role does Frankie play if any in getting poor Immy in trouble and what role does Baxter play? This you need to read and find out for yourself. This is a great debut novel with a great new character who is quite different than most PI’s. Let’s hope she comes back soon. Great characters that are well defined and really quite unique and a Police Chief and assistant you have to love, can’t wait for the next one. A definite must read for mystery lovers.

The plot of this cozy mystery is quite fun and keeps the reader guessing as to who the “bad guy” is. There are plenty of options in the story. While I enjoyed the story, I had a difficult time enjoying Imogene Duckworthy, the protagonist. She seems to be run by her emotions rather than her mind, and that image of an empty-headed woman turned me off. Still, even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. So it is with Imogene, she gets to the killer before anyone else. I enjoyed her mother, Hortense. Her use of extravagant language was quite amusing. The characters are certainly memorable and well-developed. The plot has its twists and turns, and the unexpected is never far away.

If you like quirky characters as much as I do you’ll love this story! Imogene ( Immy) Duckworthy is a young, slightly naive, single mom whose mind is dead set on becoming a detective like her dad. How she goes about her quest while simultaneously trying to solve the murder of her Uncle Huey in the small town of Saltlick makes for some hilarious reading. I’m looking forward to the next installment in this series by Agatha nominee, Kaye George.

Choke was a rather charming first in a series featuring young mother Immy, her darling daughter, (Nancy) Drew Duckworthy and Immy's retired librarian mother. The characters were pretty well done and fun to follow. The stage is set for Immy to inherit her late uncle's restaurant. The story that got her to this point is her bumbling attempt at becoming a detective or PI. Think a younger, cuter Columbo. It was a fun read, nothing remarkable really jumped out at me in this book tho.

What Fun!

I'm a picky reader, and I like a strong , smart female lead, but I couldn't help but fall in love with Immy's niavete. And her mother, Hortense, makes the perfect foil. These characters are far from cookie-cutter, and the things they experience may seem beyond belief in any other mystery, but they make perfect sense in Saltlick. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a cozy as much as this. I Can't wait to read the next one in the series. I high!y recommend it!

Cute cozy mystery where the main character is a waitress who wants to be a PI and when her mother is questioned about the murder of her uncle decides to “break” her mother out of jail and go on the run. Eventually she gets a job with a PI, the murder is solved and we will have to go to the next book to see what happens next.

Imogene Duckworthy is a feisty, twenty-two-year-old unwed mother and amateur sleuth. When her uncle is killed by frozen sausage in the office of the family restaurant, the police quickly point the finger at her mother. Though not entirely convinced of her innocence, Imogene investigates, organizes a jail break and investigates some more, doing her best to find the true culprit before her mother is sentenced for murder.

With the help from the restaurant’s staff, her love interest, a friendly cop, and her mother, Imogene deftly solves the case and finds the real killer in the nick of time.

The author’s done an excellent job a murder mystery that grows more complex with every chapter. I especially enjoyed the often silly predicaments Imogene finds herself in. The author’s style of writing is quite accessible, making it easy to get lost in the story.

Choke is a fun read about a small town filled with eccentric characters and a naïve, yet loveable, protagonist. Those who love to read cozy mysteries with gutsy amateur sleuths in the lead role will enjoy this one.

Choke’ by Kaye George has been nominated for an Agatha Award in the Best First Novel Category. Like others in this category, this may be Kaye George’s first published, full-length mystery, but she is hardly new to writing. She was nominated for the 2009 Agatha Award for best short story, ‘Handbaskets, Drawers and a Killer Cold. ’ This story appears in ‘A Patchwork of Stories,’ which is a collection of her short stories. She also writes reviews for Suspense Magazine.

The story begins with Imogene, better known as Immy, quitting her job as a waitress in the family dinner where she works for Uncle Huey. Imogene, an unwed mother, who lives in a trailer with her daughter, Nancy Drew, and her mother, Hortense, has dreams of becoming a Private Investigator. When Uncle Huey is found murdered a few days later with a half –frozen package of sausage stuffed down his throat, both Immy and her mother become suspects. Now Imogene has to study quickly to figure out how a PI would find the real murderer.

Imogene Duckworthy is truly a worthy sleuth of the amateur style. You get the sense that ever since she began to talk, read, and write, her rich imagination treasured all that spoke "Mystery!" While her Mother speaks a Librarians' English, our new friend, Immy chooses to speak 'Gumshoe lingo.' Her dream is to become a Detective just like her beloved and well-missed, Daddy was.

Immy lives with her baby, Nancy Drew, and her Mother, Hortense. Life is not easy for these Ladies but I loved the love they share. Ms. Hortense lives with dignity, despite her circumstances and it shows all through every situation she encounters. Immy is determined to not end up a 70-yr old waitress in a small Texas town, Saltlick.

Obviously, Ms. George is a clever author and you forget you are reading a story, but, become involved in the action, somewhat like experiencing a play. I loved the blend of characters, scenarios presented, and the many crimes that are 'by the way' styled.

The book was colorful, humorous, and a good tale.

Thank You, Ms. George, for a good time!

CHOKE is a fanstastic first in a series by Kaye George. Meet Imogene "Immy" Duckworthy, 22-year old mother of Drew, daughter of Hortense Duckworthy, and an aspiring PI. When Immy's Uncle Huey is found murdered and her mother, Hortense is taken in for questioning, Immy puts her PI skills in motion leading to an adventure that will have you laughing and turning the pages to cheer her on. Immy is a clever character that grows with the story and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the Immogene Duchworthy Mystery series. FTC Full Disclosure: I purchased this book for myself and chose it for review.

3***1/2 Parts of this story are hilarious as the main character stumbles her way to solving the murder of her uncle. Immy dreams of being a detective just like the ones she reads about in mystery novels. She even names her daughter Nancy Drew. Immy helps the police apprehend bank robbers, uncover a drug operation and unmasks a killer in spite of herself. Let's just say her methods are original. Well-drawn characters and good description of small town Texas. The murderer was obvious to me about half-way through the story and long before Immy (or the cops) figured it out. There's room to grow, but she's got good material to work with.

it was ok. there were some misspellings such as pitcher for picture. kind of what you expect in an e-book. but it made me wonder if the the author is trying to make the main character, Imogene Duckworthy, sound really ignorant. really hated the "gumshoe" lingo and choosing the name Guido as a suspect. probably won't read another one from this series as i really don't care about the characters to want to know what they are getting up to in the next book.

In a review I read this main character was compared to Stephanie Plum, sadly that is not the case. The book was humorous, but not laugh out loud funny, as Stephanie Plum books frequently are. I liked the setting in Texas and even found some similarities to laugh about (All Sips instead of AllSup's convenience stores). A quick read that was a little better than ok, I might just give the second Imogene book a try.

I'm about half way through and I am loving it. The characters are compelling and all speak in their own voice. The setting is wonderful, especially the names of the towns. Immy may not alwasy make the best choice, but she alwasy makes the most interesting one. OLne thing wrong with it: it's too short. So I am going to need another soon.

You will fall in love with Immy. At first I thought, "How could someone be so naive?" I thought back to how I was when I was her age, realized I was not much different, then relaxed and enjoyed the story. It was fun to see how she fumbles through and solves the murder. An enjoyable read.
