Life has never looked so promising for Shelby Hamlin. After weathering a lonely childhood, her father’s death, and her mother’s rejection for joining the Church, she is now engaged to someone who appears to be the ideal man: Brad Thompson, an ambitious BYU student who’s stalwart in the gospel. And when Shelby travels alone to Brad’s hometown in Montana while he’s in California, she’s warmly embraced by her future in-laws—with the exception of Cameron, Brad’s resentful brother whose own engagement recently ended in bitter scandal. But as Cameron becomes Shelby’s increasingly frequent companion in Brad’s absence, their initial sparks of irritation become the glowing beginnings of a complicated romance. And as the two explore the breathtaking scenery of Big Sky country, Shelby’s heart pulls her away from her carefully laid plans. Can she have the love she’s always wanted without destroying the family of her dreams?
OhmygoshIlovedthissomuch!!!!!! THIS is exactly what an LDS romance should be. Period. It made me feel all of the things. The romantic tension is unreal you guys! I was practically jumping out of my skin the fire was so hot. When I finished reading I immediately checked to see if author Jeanette Miller had written any more books. If she had, I would have bought every single one.
From page one I liked Shelby. She is a very likeable character. She seems like she could be me, you, or any of us. She's...normal. Her reactions felt real. The dialogue flowed. I like it when I can put myself in the shoes of the main character.
Cameron, oh Cameron! I have the hots for you. I do. He is so down to earth and I love that he's a forest ranger of types. I love all of the outdoors-y things he does. He is desirable and I loved his mannerisms and that dimple of his. I can picture him in my minds eye. Oh, yes I can!
The plot of very good. I mean, it takes you OUT of Provo. Finally an LDS book outside of Zion. Every character was important. You got to know them all and you felt something for them. I had no trouble turning the pages. There was always something keeping the suspense going. It was awesome. There were enough surprises to keep me interested and moments that took my breath away. Kisses that made my whole body feel warm and instilled a longing inside me for these characters.
I enjoyed this so very much. I needed a good book and I'm so glad this was the one I picked up. It was worth every penny. I can't wait to read it again!
Shelby had an unstable upbringing and when she joined the church, her mother disowned her. She sets some lofty goals for herself and finds herself engaged to BYU's most eligible bachelor. He sends her to Montana for a few weeks in the summer to meet his family and have his mom help with wedding plans. While there, she meets his older brother, Cameron, and sparks fly. What is she going to do??
A story of self-discovery and love. I liked how Shelby was insecure and lonely, yet came off across as happy. Cameron was really amazing, taking the blame for someone else's mistake at the risk of his own reputation.
This was a fabulous, easy LDS romance. I really enjoyed it. :) This book hit the spot for me the last couple days, like a good drink of lemonade. It was like brain candy. Or heart candy. I'll look forward to reading more books along these lines from this author.
This book reminds me of "While you were Sleeping" the movie with Sandra Bullock. Sometimes predictable but a good clean read. I really liked Cameron, I felt for his struggles and the gossiping!
My good friend Jen let me read this book, which was written by her relative Jeanette Miller. Montana Summer, published by Covenant Communications, is an LDS romance that addresses breaking up an engagement more seriously than any other book I have read previously. The author handles the challenging emotions of the situation in a believable and morally-grounded manner. And the emotional quality of the writing was potent without being overwhelming. I was pleasantly surprised by this debut novel and look forward to seeing more from Miller.
From the back of the book: "Life has never looked so promising for Shelby Hamlin. In the first chapter we learn that Shelby is engaged to the perfect man. It felt shallow and I thought that Montana Summer was just another typical, LDS novel - more than a bit irritating. I was wrong. Montana Summer is not the typical LDS romance. Jeanette Miller can write. Her talent is especially showcased in the relationship of Shelby and Cameron, with an emotional passion that each tries to deny.
If you enjoy LDS romance, this is a good one to spend your night with.
I LOVED IT!!! I haven't read a real romance in so long! (mainly because they are all so naughty). This was a good, exciting romance. Even though I knew what was going to happen in the end, by the middle of the book I couldn't put it down. At 2:30 when I decided I needed to go to sleep, I dreamed about it all night and read it first thing this morning until I finished it (but, now I'm sad it's over). Loved the familial twists and turns, the deep, multi-faceted characters and I've never wanted to trip someone who uses a cane so badly (read it, you'll see what I mean). I wish there were more stories by this author, she obviously has a gift (and I don't say that because I know her). LOVED IT!!!
I couldn't put this one down! Great love story and shows that your true love may come when you least expect it! Shelby is engaged to Brad, a wonderful, temple worthy man. They plan to spend the summer together at his parents home in Montana, but his job starts earlier than expected, so she goes alone. She meets Cameron, Brads brother, and falls madly in love with him, and he falls for her. It was so wonderfully romantic!!
This book was really nice, I loved the forbidden love, although couldn’t imagine how a family could handle it in real life, the characters were amazing so real and life like, the story is set in Montanna, I have been to Montanna and it really is lovely, Loved it
I usually don't enjoy LDS fiction because they tend to be over-the-top and (strangely) I usually dislike the characters and find them very hard to relate to, but I really liked this book. The characters were great, it was clean, and just a fun feel-good book.
After a life of trials, Shelby Hamilton has it all: the perfect job, the perfect fiance, and the perfect summer plans. Shelby and her fiance, Brad Thompson, made plans to spend the summer in Montana with Brad's family, but then things changed last minute and Brad sent Shelby to Montana for a few days alone. When she first arrives Shelby is greeted by her future in-laws with such warmth that she is a little taken aback. The only exception to this warm reception was Brad's brother, Cameron, who was resentful of his brother's engagement as his own had just ended bitterly. Over time Cameron and Shelby become inseparable companions and the two share a spark that stats the beginning of a complicated romance that Shelby can't quite explain. As time goes on her "perfect plans" don't seem so perfect anymore and she is faced with a decision: Brad or Cameron.
I really enjoyed reading this story (even if it isn't quite Young Adult) because it was about a young girl who is dealing with some things that I might be facing in the near future. Shelby is a young college student who is dealing with relationship problems and teaches us how to remain stalwart in the gospel. Even though the main character isn't the "proper" Young Adult age, I would recommend this to young adult Latter-Day Saint girls because it is a clean romance book.
2 1/2 stars. A quick and simple read, I didn’t expect much and I didn’t get much. The writing was not great, in fact it was terrible, the dialogue was forced and unnatural. The author made it clear from the beginning the religious aspects and affiliation throughout the romance, and it’s clear that our main character, Shelby, has a strong testimony in the gospel, but it’s does not include it often at all.
The book wrapped up in a strange, nonsensical way that felt overly rushed. There were too many lose ends to count. There are so many details that were excluded for no reason at all.
Obviously, as I said before, I didn’t expect much. I knew full well going in that it was a cheesy romance novel, but it missed many opportunities to be a much better version of itself with some simple fixes.
It's been a little bit since I read this book, but I felt like it would be a good idea today to help Jeanette Miller out and let everyone know how good it was!
I really liked it. I remember the romance being sweet; the appeal of Cameron over Brad making clear sense (as well as being a good trope twist!); the family, adventure, and home that Shelby starts to find in outdoorsy and homey Montana being portrayed as vivid and appealing; and the religious aspects of the book adding up with what I believe, too. So I look forward to reading more from Jeanette in the future! Check out Montana Summer today, and you won't be sorry.
Really awkward love triangle and something about the writer's style (not sure what exactly) made for a book that sort of annoyed me. The setting was lovely, the story unfolded well enough, and the characters were all "nice" people. The dialogue fell a bit flat and the pace went from high drama to 'meh' like a pendulum. The ending was a happy 'meh' moment. No sex, no swearing, some violence
I liked it. The story flowed well and I liked the characters. Brad was always going to be on the losing side and she paints him so we do not feel sorry for him when he loses the girl and the contrast to his brother is stark. Really liked the character of Cameron though. Bit cliche
At first I thought this would turn into the typical boy meets girl fluffy LDS romance, and while it did have several of those vibes, there were some plot twists I didn't see coming. An enjoyable piece of fluff for a weekend.
A bit mushier than I care for, but was easy to love the main character. And I love the family life that she became a part of! I also love it when my children come home and visit!!!
It was hard to put this book down. Romance at it’s best! Just a few things that I wasn’t so sure about.
First, Shelby is described as having golden blonde hair. On the cover, the girl had dark hair! 😄 Just my OCD, but it did make it hard to picture just what she looked like.
It seemed like Shelby didn’t really care about or know her fiancé at the beginning which made it seem like she was in search of something more while being engaged.
Another thing is that there is a lot of mention of his “masculine” body. It was a little much for me.
Also, the ending was a little weird. There were a lot of juicy details and then the ending seemed so rushed.
All of these mentions might seem like I didn’t really like the book, but I absolutely did!!!
