This text contains a complete overview of the concept of brain allergies - the theory that exposure to certain foods and other substances triggers mental disorders in people so predisposed, and that such disorders can be cured by eliminating exposure to these substances.
William H. Philpott, M.D. had specialty training and practice in psychiatry, neurology, electroencephalography, nutrition, environmental medicine and toxicology. He was a founding member of the Academy of Orthomolecular Psychiatry. He is a fellow of the Orthomolecular Psychiatric Society and the Society of Environmental Medicine and Toxicology.
Between 1970 and 1975, he did a research project searching for the causes of major mental illnesses and degenerative diseases, which resulted in the publication of the books, Brain Allergies and Victory Over Diabetes. Retiring in 1990 after 40 years of medical practice, he engaged in research as a member of an Institutional Review Board, which followed strict FDA guidelines. In this capacity, he guided physicians and gathered data on the treatment and prevention of degenerative diseases using magnetic therapy.
The Linus Pauling Award was presented to William H. Philpott, M.D. in 1998 by the Orthomolecular Health Society, "for his scientific leadership and scholarship spanning the entire history of Orthomolecular medicine".
Read this when it was new. Two different doctors, not in consultation with each other, recommended it. Answered a lot of self-mental-doubt questions in useful ways. Definitely increased awareness of brain chemistry. The emerging science of brain imaging has reinforced what I learned from Philpott.
I'm continually surprised more people aren't mentally/behavior affected by all the excitoxins used by the food industry. Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills
While dated, I'd still recommend as a basic in understanding behavior, particularly for the 'miners' canary' body types
Wow, this book is jammed packed with information. It is about how foods and chemicals cause reactions in every part of our body from physical to mental reactions. It discusses how foods and chemicals cause either allergy or addictions within us. It also covers the breakdown of the pancreas, the wonders of Vitamin C, rotation diets, and the effects of allergy or addition on physical and mental aspects within our bodies.
This is a pretty on depth book so I think it would be best to read only after one has some fundamental knowledge on these topics...it is more advanced reading on these subjects in my opinion.
I of course REALLY enjoyed the information regarding the pancreas due to my illness, but also equally enjoyed the information regarding mental illness due to my profession. Overall I think this book has a lot of good information and goes back to the basics about how what we put in our bodies affects us. Again I would recommend to anyone wanting further information on these topics and think it is best for readers to have a fundamental knowledge of these topics prior to reading this more advanced information.
An interesting and compelling argument for the hypothesis that many people, particularly children, may suffer from allergies to even common food categories; these allergies may contribute to a range of disorders, including ADD, ADHD, depression, autistic symptoms, and many other attitudinal & behavioral problems.
Dr. Philpott was truly an mad scientist kind of guy. I am personally aware of testing he did on unknowing subjects, I know because I was one of them. Then down the road he writes this book. Look up his name and a school for children called Green Valley in Florida. He was in trouble for drugging kids and Co2 treatments along with whatever elde. This was not a good man, nor a good doctor. He was a nut! Please take the time to look him up connected to doing harm to children.
