An unforgettable spiritual journey! Undoubtedly, one of Ashfaq Ahmed's greatest works of literature. This drama will move you, inspire you, and probably even change your life.
Ashfaq Ahmed (Urdu: اشفاق احمد) was a writer, playwright and broadcaster from Pakistan. He authored several books in Urdu. His works included novels, short stories and plays for television and radio. He was awarded President's Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz for meritorious services in the field of literature and broadcasting.
After Partition, when Ahmed arrived at the Walton refugee camp with millions of other migrants, he used to make announcements on a megaphone around the clock. Later, he got a job in Radio Azad Kashmir, which was established on a truck that used to drive around in various parts of Kashmir. He then got lectureship at Dayal Singh College, Lahore for two years. Whereafter, he went to Rome to join Radio Rome as an Urdu newscaster. He also used to teach Urdu at Rome university. During his stay in Europe, he received diplomas in the Italian and French languages from the University of Rome and University of Grenoble, France. He also earned a special training diploma in radio broadcasting from New York University.
He started writing stories in his childhood, which were published in Phool [Flower] magazine. After returning to Pakistan from Europe, he took out his own monthly literary magazine, Dastaango [Story Teller], and joined Radio Pakistan as a script writer. He was made editor of the popular Urdu weekly, Lail-o-Nahar [Day and Night], in place of famous poet Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum by the Government of Pakistan.
In 1962, Ahmed started his popular radio program, Talqeen Shah [The Preacher] which made him immensely popular among the people in towns and villages.[13] He was appointed director of the Markazi Urdu Board in 1966, which was later renamed as Urdu Science Board, a post he held for 29 years. He remained with the board until 1979.
Ahmed, in his later years of life, was greatly inclined towards Sufism. His close association with Qudrat Ullah Shahab and Mumtaz Mufti was also attributed to this tendency. He used to appear in a get together with his fans in PTV program Baittakh (The Guest Room) and Zaviya (The Dimension) where he gave swift but satisfying responses to each and every question posed by the youth audience. On 7 September 2004, Ashfaq Ahmed died of pancreatic cancer. He was laid to rest in a Model Town, Lahore.
This book is very personal to me. It dropped into my hands from the blue sky and the fact that the heroine and I shared names, faced the same spiritual struggles, and suffered from that itch to get answers, remains a mystery to me. But she finds Irshad, whereas I have found nobody yet.
This is the best ever novel in Urdu on the Theme of Tasawuff (Sufi). Its a pity that nobody has ever thought of translating this into English, wish i could do that myself, but my Urdu is not up to the mark.
A story of a sojourner, a traveler , an explorer on the path of spirituality. More than mysticism, this philosophical magnum opus is about code of life, rather about life itself. From the protagonist’s, Irshad, standpoint existence transcends. The supreme dialogues engrossed in cordial philosophy, saturated with meaning coerce an individual to seek the higher meaning of life. For anybody interested in reading philosophical mastery to quench their thirst for spirituality must read this book. Here’s the link to PDF file. http://www.4shared.com/get/30UXMv1u/M... I am quoting a few lines in roman Urdu as I can’t type Urdu here.
Larki: Hum khaufzada kiyoun hotay hain sir?
Irshad: Kiyoun kay humay maloom nahi hota hum kaun hain.
Larki: Humain kiyoun maloom nahi hota kay hum kaun hain?
Irshad: Is liye kiyoun kay hum ne kabhi tehkeek nahi ki hoti….kabhi is baray mai soucha nahi hota.
Imran: mai apny ander feham kaise paida karoun sir?
Irshad: mislay ka khauf door kerkay.
Imran: Khauf ko kaise door karoun sir?
Irshad: khauf ko apni traf se takat faraham kerna band ker do.
And then it goes on…you are likely to get all answers you are seeking out since long. In the end the protagonist’s son sums it up as the following;
Mysticism, it seems, was way of life for my father…to see the God one must be pure at heart. Without morality of the character this vision will not be granted.
Tere mann chale ka sauda hai.... Kuch khatta or meetha.....
Ishfaq Ahmed's writings hold a beauty that someone could write a whole book in order to praise his writing , this exactly happened with me I want to write about this legendary piece of writing but running out of words but I'll try and let the goodreaders know the beauty lies beneath it.
This book revolves around an ordinary man who chooses the path of Sufis over all the worldly affairs and luxuries, On this journey, he meets several men who allowed him to know the actual meaning of mysticism and the difference between the worldly knowledge and spiritual teachings (roohani taleem) through various examples and happenings.
If somebody has read Ishfaq Ahmed before he better know that he tends to use small illustrations in his plays and stories to let the reader get the bigger meaning So, the one who posseses the mind who is broad enough to aware himself of the actual meaning lies beneath the text wins over and get the idea of Life.
This play is highly recommended to everyone specifically who love and adore Urdu like me and don't want its precious texts to just fade away.
A classic in true sense. When you go through such literature at your early age, you find it like some boring sermon, but the discussions in this drama really touch your soul, when you are able to make some sense and relate to it with your own life.
Like all classics of the world (like Mahabharata), most of the characters are with gray shades and are not rigidly black & white. Every character has its own point of view for his / her actions. The transformation of main character Irshad from a business tycoon to selfless sufi is covered convincingly.
Tasawwuf is a controversial and difficult topic and only a legend like Ashfaq Ahmed has guts to convey such message with clarity. As far as dramatisation of the script is concerned, in my view Rashid Dar did complete justice to this difficult project. I think that neither we have any directors now who can convey this script in such an effective manner nor rating hungry commercialized producers would invest in such projects.
A tale of a person's spiritual transformation. Ashfaq Ahmed discussed the pre-requisites to get the journey started on the path of Sufism or Tasawuf. Before travelling on this way one should analyze the heart and look deep inside if she really wants to travel on this way. He discusses things related to metaphysics. The things where sufism and science overlap and the way Sufis observe things like scientists do. Also the hypocrisy of our society is discussed as how people from different schools of thought criticize others for just the difference of opinion. A good book that lasts a deep impression. One of those books one remembers.
"Man Chale Ka Sauda" by Sir Ashfaq Ahmed is a powerful play that can easily turn a 'Muslim' to 'True Believer'. It deals with all the hard philosophies of 'Life' and later teaches them all to the audience. All the characters in the play are symbolic. At the start of the play Sir overshadows the story of 'MahaRani Meenawati' and her son 'Gopichand'. MahaRani Meenawati wants her son to be the spiritual person by asking him to leave this material world and search the real 'Truth' of life. Irshad's mother is totally opposite of 'MahaRani Meenawati' and wants her son to be the man of this material world. All the characters even show their characteristics through their names. For example the protagonist of the play 'Irshad' proves himself as a man of order and obedience. Cobbler Ramzan, Shepherd Abdullah, and Labba Peon are the different pictures of one character and lead 'Irshad' to the way of spirituality. Postman Muhammad Hussain also plays an important role in making 'Irshad' a spiritual person. The heroine of the play, 'Momina' plays the part of a girl, who wanders for the search of meaning and 'Real love' in life. The character of 'Azra' plays the role of hollow from inside type of rich and beautiful women. The character of 'Shuja' is a worldly and materialistic character who forces Irshad to become worldly like him. The character of 'Kabir' is also a hypocrite friend of Irshad. Through portraying the character of an 'Old Man', Sir shows the obedience and gratefulness of the Almighty in the old generation. By portraying the character of a young girl, the estimated grand daughter of that very old man, Ashfaq Sir tells about the increasing disobedience in the lower class' young generation. The characters of 'Naila' and 'Basit' show the critical life of a work woman who can't free herself from an already married man's affair. Salma and his lover show the complexity of the relationship between them. The character of 'Nadeem' shows the disgust and anger in an unemployed educated man who can create a lot of mess. All the Student characters show higher acceptance through arguments with 'Irshad' and highlight their great will to change. At the end of the arguments, they learned to accept the diversity of different sects in Islam and try to be better Muslims instead of criticizing one another. Throughout the play, all types of characters presented in order to add beauty and aesthetical appeal to the audience. Rich poor, good, bad, greedy, pious, innocent, shrewd, normal, abnormal, simple, fashionable, Worldly, other Worldly and almost every type of character has been portrayed through the pictorial skill of Sir Ashfaq Ahmed. It shows the mastery of him in showing the real world and its dilemmas in an amazing way. In addition, a lot of verses from the 'Kalaam and Poetry', adds the aesthetic appeal to the play. It is a marvellous book which teaches the way to Allah Almighty in a spectacular way. For me, the protagonist of the play, 'Irshad' is 'Sir Ashfaq Ahmed' himself. He like the protagonist Irshad travels far away in the search of truth and spiritualism. He gave the hint to the audience by mentioning his own 'Spiritual guide', Noor Wale's saying to Irshad. Sir Ashfaq Ahmed mentions the meaning of beginning, reality, life, death, ending in an amazing way. Years ago I decided to read it but can't read it because of the heavy genre 'Drama'. But this writing truly changed my point of view by broadening the vision of seeing and understanding things. Whenever I start reading any writing by Sir Ashfaq Ahmed, I think that it must be the masterpiece of him, but another writing of him surprises me the other way. "Man Chale Ka Sauda" is a drama that tells us the superiority of the drama of Sir's age. It also teaches us the lesson that the genre 'Drama' can also teach great lessons about life, reality, and Sufism and so on, if it is written by the great authors. By writing "Man Chale Ka Sauda", Sir Ashfaq Ahmed proves that he was a master in writing not only short stories, Fantasy books, Zaviya, Books on Spiritualism but he was also a playwright and celebrated dramatist who was all round every way. He was a living example who travelled and learned throughout his whole 'Life'. His writings has change the mindset of people from down to top. His writings had inspired people from every strata of 'Life'... "Mann Chale Ka Sauda", is an outstanding creation of a play by the pen of him. The play rightly has the power to change the readers from within. It teaches plenty of philosophies about life changing realities that no one can escape from. All the characters teach these realities in a realistic way. The protagonist of the play, 'Irshad' teaches the reality of 'Spirituality' in a marvellous way. Ashfaq Ahmed gives answers to very critical questions through different types of characters. The characters ask questions and Sir Ashfaq through the month of the protagonist 'Irshad' provides the valid answers of them. So, one can rightly state that 'Irshad' is the mouthpiece of Sir Ashfaq Ahmed himself. In this respect, scenes of students are very crucial. The definitions of Love to a particular human being and love to Almighty is marvellously described in the play. All the book is full of philosophy of life and its lessons. Here are some of the important questions and answers in the form of dialogues that I have translated: "The dogs keep barking, the caravan keeps moving." "When a person starts doing all his work with his hands, many unnecessary tasks are automatically eliminated from his life and also time is found to meet his own self." "He who is a real 'Saint' has no demand, he has nothing to do with any slave, but all his symbols are connected with the one above." "Kulsoom: By the way, does it matter if you say Allah Allah with your tongue only? Irshad: You are amazing, girl, how is it possible to fill your mouth with water by mentioning the name of Khatai and not having any effect by mentioning the name of Allah?" "Student: How can the path to inner journey be found? Irshad: By eliminating ego's competition with others... When you stop stuffing your ego with other people's ego, then the ego begins to see the way of 'Spirituality' from inward." "Post Man Muhammad Hussain: When there is no presence of spirituality, what should the seeker seek and what should the doer do? Irshad: Hazrat Musa A.S said, O Allah, whose deed of mine is more beloved to You that I should do it more and repeat it over and over again? It was decreed by Almighty that we liked this action that when your mother used to beat you as a child, you used to run towards her even after being beaten and play in her swing. The same is necessary for the seeker, Brother Muhammad Hussain Sahab, no matter how difficult the home may be and no matter how humiliating it may be, but In every situation, he should turn to Almighty Allah and keep invoking His grace."
The best of the lot, highly recommended. A masterclass on sufism, mysticism and journey to one's self. An excellent binder of meta physics and spiritualism. Strentgh of character "Irshad " enriches the book, as a guide to the wanderers. His spiritual journey offers many high points carrying potential for the reader to reflect, ponder, serve and organize himself. The baba g (Ashfaq Ahmed through this book) is a cobbler of soul, dispatcher to the rightness, cleaner of the heart and feeder to the appetite.
Leaving the journey of two opposite paths and chosing only one path that is onenes of Allah. He has told very well this journey of spiritually. Dialogue that he uses in this novel shows his connection with Allah.
The novel follows the journey of a young man, Saleem, who embarks on a path of self-discovery and inner fulfillment. His quest to find the true essence of life leads him to encounter various individuals, each representing a unique perspective on existence. Through their dialogues, Ashfaq Ahmed challenges conventional ideas about success, love, and spirituality, presenting profound insights that compel the reader to introspect.
One of the most striking features of Manchalay Ka Sauda is its emphasis on the eternal struggle between materialism and spirituality. Ashfaq Ahmed beautifully captures the tension between worldly desires and the pursuit of inner peace. The characters are vividly portrayed, and their emotional depth makes them relatable, even as they discuss abstract and philosophical concepts.
The language of the novel is poetic and deeply evocative, filled with metaphors and parables that enhance its mystical tone. While some passages may seem dense, they reward the patient reader with timeless wisdom. Ashfaq Ahmed’s ability to blend everyday experiences with profound spiritual lessons is unmatched, and Manchalay Ka Sauda stands as a testament to his literary genius.
For readers who enjoy exploring the deeper questions of life and who value a narrative rich in wisdom and introspection, Manchalay Ka Sauda is an unforgettable experience. It is not just a novel but a guide to living a more meaningful and fulfilled life. Highly recommended for those ready to embark on a thought-provoking journey.
A magnum opus and drama aired on PTv staring firdous jamal, khiyyam sarhadi in 1991, the main essence, zest of the book is amalgamation of sufism, tassawuf, & science. If you want to reach GOd it will be through Science, and amount of degree and respect to scientist, "if you want to know how the universe, the reality and your life is through quantum physics", physics in its higher state blends into metaphysics, Quantum physics being vs nonbeing, sufis, aur allah ki qurbat khasil krny hai tou woh tasbih say nahi blky science kay through, Irshad is a rich businessman but having too much he restlessness, search of peace, mother and son beautiful chemistry, cobbler, shehpered, & postman, sweepman, sufism, the use of language in dialogues, True nature of reality, physics is the metaphysics, bizzare nature of quantum physics delves with the nature of blending metaphysics and naturer :)
Ok for those who like Sufism of subcontinental origins. Disappointing for those who love western philosophers. It’s about a spiritual journey of a rich industrialist who wants to find God. He tries to learn from spiritual people, but not the conventional ones. It emphasises on learning from teachers with hierarchy. Narrative is a bit confused. On few occasions, Ashfaq mixes quantum physics with the sufis which is scientifically incorrect, but it’s the work of fiction. Not for me. Giving it 3 stars just for the originality and Ashfaq’s beautiful prose.
Muwahid jab maqam e tauheed per ponchta hai to. na muwahid rehta hai na tauheed, na wahid na bisyad, na abed na mabood, na hasti na nesti, na sifat na mosoof, na zahid na batil, na mazeel na maqam, na kufar na islam, na kafir na musalman…
It's a story about the journey of a man toward Sufism. The book is written in script form which is quite difficult to read for a new reader in my opinion book needs to be republished and some extra elaboration should be excluded.
Excellent Drama . It gives us motivation to focus our mind towards Allah and Right deeds. It tries to clarify the meaning of life and the world. Must read book.
