Ashfaq Ahmed (Urdu: اشفاق احمد‎) was a writer, playwright and broadcaster from Pakistan. He authored several books in Urdu. His works included novels, short stories and plays for television and radio. He was awarded President's Pride of Performance and Sitara-i-Imtiaz for meritorious services in the field of literature and broadcasting.

After Partition, when Ahmed arrived at the Walton refugee camp with millions of other migrants, he used to make announcements on a megaphone around the clock. Later, he got a job in Radio Azad Kashmir, which was established on a truck that used to drive around in various parts of Kashmir. He then got lectureship at Dayal Singh College, Lahore for two years. Whereafter, he went to Rome to join Radio Rome as an Urdu newscaster. He also used to teach Urdu at Rome university. During his stay in Europe, he received diplomas in the Italian and French languages from the University of Rome and University of Grenoble, France. He also earned a special training diploma in radio broadcasting from New York University.

He started writing stories in his childhood, which were published in Phool [Flower] magazine. After returning to Pakistan from Europe, he took out his own monthly literary magazine, Dastaango [Story Teller], and joined Radio Pakistan as a script writer. He was made editor of the popular Urdu weekly, Lail-o-Nahar [Day and Night], in place of famous poet Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum by the Government of Pakistan.

In 1962, Ahmed started his popular radio program, Talqeen Shah [The Preacher] which made him immensely popular among the people in towns and villages.[13] He was appointed director of the Markazi Urdu Board in 1966, which was later renamed as Urdu Science Board, a post he held for 29 years. He remained with the board until 1979.

Ahmed, in his later years of life, was greatly inclined towards Sufism. His close association with Qudrat Ullah Shahab and Mumtaz Mufti was also attributed to this tendency. He used to appear in a get together with his fans in PTV program Baittakh (The Guest Room) and Zaviya (The Dimension) where he gave swift but satisfying responses to each and every question posed by the youth audience.
On 7 September 2004, Ashfaq Ahmed died of pancreatic cancer. He was laid to rest in a Model Town, Lahore.

A glamour of his(Ashfaq Ahmed)memories are left with us in the form of Zaviya. Furthermore, it gives us a lesson of positivity, empathy, encouragement, love and joy to become a loyal Pakistani as per the Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal's vision.

Zaviya 1,2 and 3 all are beautiful and teach us real meaning of life but Zaviya 3 is the most captive. Why Zaviya 3 can't explain. I had read it for 4 times. There was a time in my second semester, when I was suppose to study for my finals but I end up with Zaviya.

"Zaavia 3" is Baba g's philosophy on living which encompasses not only the personal pursuits of growth but also the fundamental precepts that give universality to our deeds. It teaches us how to creatively engage with life and its paradoxes, how to navigate through ups and downs, to accept Qadr, and still be grateful always.
Moreover, It emphasizes the importance of little acts of kindness and generosity, and focuses particularly on developing and nurturing a character as luminous and rich as a lighthouse to make this big vast messy world less lonely to live in!!

What a fantastic book based on the televised talks of great Ashfaque Ahmed. While reading I realized that some of the programs I may have watched years ago but great to read about these

The book is mostly contains life lessons of Ashfaque Sahab and he simplifies on how we can improve. He also talks a lot about making written dua and meditation:

I loved it and recommend all my friends to read it.

'Rooh ki Sirgoshi' literally blowed my mind away.. Such big secrets in such simple calculated words can only be said by a man well taught and a man well learned.

Words never can do justice when it comes to expression of love..

May his soul be blessed with the fragrance of darood-e-pak. Ameen.

Zaviya 3 is the last book of the series based on Ashfaq Ahmed's famous TV show from the 90s. With this book, I have completed my reading of probably one of the most famous books sold in Pakistan. In this review, I will talk collectively about all three books since they're somewhat of a continuum and have been broken into three separate books to make them easier to read.

While I was very hopeful going into reading these books and was genuinely happy after reading the first book, the second and third books have been somewhat disappointing. There are times when Ashfaq sahab's conversations are pleasant, where he takes us down memory lane from his time spent in Europe via very amusing anecdotes. However, as we move deeper into the second and third books, we realize that some of the author's ideas are dated, half-baked, based on non-facts, or plain bigoted.

Ashfaq Ahmed takes us back to and relies heavily on folk wisdom of the "Baba's" or wisemen of the sub-continent. While this focus can be singular and somewhat irrational at times, it still makes sense. For me, the books are a window into the past; a past where my late father eagerly awaited the airing of each episode, where I was fascinated by complex ideas presented in a calm gathering of intellectuals, and where life was just a little less stressful.

Overall, while I do believe that the Zaviya books offer profound insights and a heartwarming glimpse into a bygone era, after reading all three, it pains me to say that I don't think they are "essential reading". As for me, I'll hold on to these books, flaws and all, for the sentimental value they hold.

This book is like a conversation with a teacher, an elder or someone very respectable to you. Reading Ashfaq Ahmad, is like sitting with an elder and listening to them while they narrate the most interesting anecdotes from their life, the ones which have a lesson for us as well. I started reading Zaviya, from my father's collection back in 2019 or 2018, though I didn't understand it better at that time, it was my favourite book since then. As I go back to Zaviya now, as an adult, it feels like revisiting the best lessons I have ever learned. I feel like books like these are the need of the hour for youth, a book that has an element of philosophy, spiritualism, morality, religion, love, kindness, gratitude all beautifully wrapped up in anecdotes from the author's life, it naturally motivates you to become a better and kinder person for the love of humanity.
This undoubtedly, is one of my most favourite books of all times.
With reverence and gratitude for Ashfaq Sahab.🤍
