This thrilling, fast-paced novel from "Essence"]-bestselling author Anna J. continues the harrowing story of Mecca--a young woman trying to lead a life of righteousness while her aunt is determined to lead her down a dark path.
Anna J. started writing as a child, creating short stories in her creative writing classes. This later turned into writing poetry in high school. In her early twenties she entered a short story contest, and her first work of fiction "Stories To Excite You: Menage Quad" was published. Always an avid reader, Anna J. saw a void in the industry. The types of books she wanted to read hadn't been written yet. With that in mind, she penned her first book "My Woman His Wife", published in 2004, which quickly became an Essence Magazine best seller. Anna J went on to pen 12 novels. She also participated in 9 short story compilations, and self-published 9 works of fiction. Anna J. Is currently at work on future releases.
This book is so good! I absolutely love how the book was written with the feel of tales from the hood and tales from the crypt( the old school version). The author did a really good job with this book and the character development! Every time I thought I had something figured out the author will come back with a new plot twist. This is a story about Mecca that allowed the streets to turn her cold and what is know as a fact that the streets don’t love nobody. Also, be weary of who you trust and who you allow to live. Starting book 2 now.
Am enjoying this series so far. 'Lou'.. I am wondering is this short for 'Lucifer'.. Ruby is very dirty. I am wondering will Mecca's parents start talking to her in these dream sequences. I am on to part 2. Join me so I can chat & rant with someone.. lol
I am enjoying the audiobook version on my devices. 5 hours.
I'm not sure how I would've done with book but greatly enjoyed audio... Real good reading. I'll see if I can do part two.
There are very few street/urban lit that I can get into since it sounds so much like the last one I read. Yet, I liked that the author's take on adding headers under chapter with scripture. It seemed a bit weird when you read street and hear the Word of God; yet Sister Souljah did it in her latest book but was twisted story for me as if in Dante's Inferno. Metaphorically, it is like a drunk quoting scripture, yet this person can be saved regardless of their worldly act.
The story is full of deceit, betrayal, all over greed and narcissist criminality characters.
At the start of the book Mecca is murdered by her ex boyfriend. Then we travel through her life for times when she could have changed her path. Mecca witnesses the death of her parents at a young age and custody is granted to her aunt, who becomes the biggest drug dealer in the hood. Once aunt Ruby is sentenced to jail time Mecca inherits the throne. Mecca lacks her aunts ruthlessness and things fall apart. During the journey through her life Mecca learns of all the betrayal, which made me feel bad for her because EVERYONE betrayed her. I mean not one person was loyal. There are two betrayals that was totally unexpected. Most tales like this have a "moral of the story", that's not happening here. If anything by the end Mecca is just pissed off and wants revenge.
I enjoyed book very much Mecca's parents were killed in front of her by a friend of the family, and her aunt has to take her in, and she soon finds out the truth wrath of her Aunt Ruby. Mecca is sitting on top of the world with everything until her Aunt is also taken away from her , Now the turns of all of this is you will have to read the story to find out the real true meaning and find the real hand that Mecca was dealt and to find out what happens in Mecca's world because everyone is a suspect. Anna J did good with this book not like all her other's she went a different way way but still did a great job in this book...
Hell's Diva by Anna J. was a well written, entertaining read revolving around Mecca's life compliments of "Lou". I thought Mecca's life was nothing short of astonishing-from the time the story began as she witnessed her parents demise---to the end as she was enlightened to who was really on her side. Hell's Diva had a smooth flowing storyline that included eye opening revelations with a touch of humor. I'm looking forward to reading more of Mecca's Mission in part 2 of this saga & I highly recommend this book.
Okay so I confess I did get confused a few times in the book. The book jumped all over the place. Overall, it was a decent read. Is the author trying to tell us not to trust anybody? What’s the purpose of the devil showing Mecca the betray if he wants her to change her ways? All that did was piss her off even more.
This was a really good book. I feel like THIS is what the sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever SHOULD have been like, when reading about a Life After Death scenario. Mecca and her people were ruthless, and I could see how they all got caught up in the life. I enjoyed this. I'll probably read the sequel.
Anna J. has definitely penned an unconventional tale with Hell's Diva. We are introduced to Mecca Skyes while she is stark naked and tied to a bedpost being shot by Tah, whom appears to be a very angry and bitter lover. Following the vicious attack she appears to be suspended in limbo with a mysterious man in a red robe she suspects is the devil. For various reasons, the man dubbed Lou takes Mecca back in time to witness the major occurrences in her life. Very "Ghost of Christmas Past", entertaining, and unique in the urban literary world. Starting with the time she hid under her bed at eight years of age and watched the barbaric murder of her parents in horror, we observe random events that lead to the fateful day of her pending demise.
Mecca's aunt Ruby takes her into her home and under her wing following her parent's massacre. Aunt Ruby just happens to be the only female holding a top spot in the drug game on the East Coast so of course Mecca eventually follows in her foot steps. With best friend Dawn and long time boyfriend Tah, Mecca is on top of the world making money and spending it even faster on any and everything her heart desires. Things change over the years and aunt Ruby is taken out of the immediate picture for a while. As Mecca focuses on holding down the family narcotics business for her aunt, boyfriend Tah starts treating her wrong and surprisingly one of his friends starts treating her right, causing conflict in Mecca's heart.
We are taken on an literally roller coaster ride of love, death, and betrayal. As we effortlessly back track through Mecca's existence we slip in and out of her past and the present. We view the times she could have done good and gotten on a legal path in life but instead she made savage choices repeatedly. When shown the vicious things she has done will Mecca show remorse? Will Mecca learn anything and regret any of her choices? How will she react when shown things she was unaware of? And the million dollar question, will she get a second chance to better herself? Pick up Hell's Diva and find out for yourself, it's well worth it.
This was a really good book that makes you ask yourself; who can you trust? . For Mecca no one everyone she cared for the most betrayed her in the worst kind of way, and the worst or " ultimate betrayal" comes at the end by the person she least expected. I can't wait to get started on part 2 to see what happens.
Hell's Diva Mecca's Mission is a must read for 2011. In the pages of this novel Mecca's life flashes right before your eye's. This novel started off with a great plot and very interesting character's .
3.5 Really fast paced novel. The devil shows Mecca the error of her ways and takes her through age 8 up to her being shot by one of the many ppl who betrayed her.
